Gone Are ‘Daddy’ Days. These Are ‘Mother’ Times.

To many people on the internet, the actress Toni Collette is known simply as “mother.”Ms. Collette has played more than her share of mothers throughout her career: a matriarch with dissociative identity disorder on the TV show “United States of Tara”; a miniatures artist whose family is haunted after the death of her own mother in the film “Hereditary”; and, more recently, an American mom charged with taking over her Italian family’s mob business in the movie “Mafia Mamma.”But Ms. Collette is not necessarily called mother for playing fictional ones, or even for being a mother in real life. Instead, fans have bestowed the title as a way to express their appreciation. When fans call her mother, which they often do, “it feels like a well-intended, collective, familial, warm hug,” Ms. Collette said in an email. She is just one of the many female celebrities who, if lacking a proper understanding of the word’s new use, might wonder why they suddenly have so many children.

CNN —Jordanna Barrett, the wife of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett, spoke out for the first time on Wednesday since the couple’s two-year-old daughter drowned in a swimming pool on Sunday. The child was taken to an area hospital but could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after, authorities said. “Thank you all for all the messages, flowers, thoughts and prayers,” Barrett wrote in an Instagram post. I love you forever and always.”Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Buccaneers defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers called the death a “tragedy” and offered support to the Barrett family. He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019 and was a part of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning team in 2021.
There are supports, but a magician hid some of them in floor-to-ceiling bookcases and threaded others through wisteria-laden trellises. Though labeled Midcentury Modern, his houses are nothing like the better known Midcentury Modern works of architects like Richard Neutra, which are composed of flat, white surfaces. And, though labeled organic, they are nothing like the better-known organic works of Frank Lloyd Wright, which tend to hug the ground. Mr. Davis’s houses aren’t flat, or white, or low. They soar, in a style that Hans Baldauf, the author of a new book about Mr. Davis, calls “wood expressionism.” Mr. Davis himself liked to call his approach Forgotten Modern.

Changing the WorldMost babies look you in the face, but my son looked off to the side. As a toddler he fought something inside himself, and all my love could not help. I told him the world would not change for him; he must change for it. He is trying to change the world. When he leaves this fall for graduate school, his goodbye hug will leave me crying in the driveway.
Instead, fixed income, which was unpopular when rates were low, is back in favor and seeing strong capital flows into products like bond funds, said fund managers at the Milken Institute Global Conference this week. Attendees also discussed whether federal regulators should raise FDIC deposit insurance after First Republic Bank was seized and sold to JPMorgan, and how markets will react to even higher interest rates and potentially more market volatility. Others warned that companies will soon have to refinance their debt at higher rates, making them less attractive. Instead, thanks to higher interest rates, fixed income is once again playing a bigger role in portfolios. "The Fed has helped us put the income back in fixed income," said Anne Walsh, Chief Investment Officer for Guggenheim Partners Investment Management.
The mother of a transgender teenager told Insider her family is trying to move to Canada. As anti-trans laws spread in the US, she's worried about the next presidential election. Her teenage son is transgender, and because of the rise of anti-trans legislation in the United States, her family is planning to move to Canada in the next year and a half. Even though anti-trans laws are ramping up in states like Tennessee and Florida, things are relatively stable where we are in Oregon — for now. I know a lot of parents of trans kids feel that the conversation of "Which state should I go to?"
Has Boston Seen the Last of Patrice Bergeron?

Patrice Bergeron’s final hug on the ice on Sunday was reserved for Brad Marchand, his longtime linemate and friend. If it was Bergeron’s final moment in a Boston Bruins uniform, so ends a magnificent 19-year career that places him in the pantheon of great Boston athletes. But somewhere on that glittering list stands Bergeron, one of the greatest two-way centers in hockey history. “He is one of the best to ever play the game,” Marchand said in March, when the Bruins appeared invincible. It’s hard for anyone to drag their feet when your best player and oldest guy is out there setting the example.”

The first novel was probably Murasaki Shikibu’s ‘Tale of Genji,’ written in the 11th century. The last one that mattered, closing a millennium’s loop, was probably Zadie Smith’s ‘White Teeth,’ published in 2000. What’s come since has been the death rattle, and remixes of that death rattle.”Those weren’t, you might have guessed, words from Siri. Samuel Richardson, in the 18th century, wondered if the novel had said what it had to say. The fire has been stirred under these questions thanks to the sudden arrival of sophisticated artificial intelligence chatbots, notably ChatGPT.
Here's how you can make your own AI commercial. It’s a story about my mother, and the White relatives who shunned me at birth—and still somehow became family. I now know one of the reasons my family didn’t tell me about my mom’s illness is because they didn’t know how. I vividly recall thinking as I looked at my mom: I didn’t know a White person could suffer like this. I saw White, Black, and brown people hug and call each other “brother” and “sister” after worship service. John Blake is a Senior Writer at CNN and the author of “More Than I Imagined: What a Black Man Discovered About the White Mother He Never Knew.”

Infertility affects about 1 in 6 people, according to a recent report from the World Health Organization previously covered by CNN. She regularly covers the topic of infertility and recently published a piece about how to help people going through infertility. “Infertility treatments are often physically taxing.
The company of ‘New York, New York’ Photo: Paul KolnikThe Broadway musical “New York, New York,” set in the heady days after the end of World War II, is an unabashedly rhapsodic love letter to the city. It embraces with a big bear hug—one that contemporary dwellers would probably recoil from, speaking literally—the image of New York as the fabled dream-chasing capital of the world, a notion immortalized in the title song. New York, New York St. James Theatre, 246 W. 44th St., New York $59-$279, 888-985-9421The show is very loosely based on the stylized 1977 Martin Scorsese movie of the same title. The looser the better. The movie is turgid and almost unwatchable today, primarily due to the repellent behavior of Robert De Niro ’s character—he’s basically a saxophone-playing Travis Bickle from “Taxi Driver,” minus the charm.
A Reddit user posted a pizza ad he made using AI tools like ChatGPT Plus and Midjourney. The ad is for a fake pizza restaurant called "Pepperoni Hug Spot," and shows "people" eating pizza. Well unsurprisingly, the ad for a fake pizza restaurant called "Pepperoni Hug Spot" is not real — it's all AI-generated. The fake pizza restaurant ad was created by a Reddit user named PizzaLater, and was posted to the Midjourney Reddit page. "Our chefs make pizza with heart and special touch," the ad says, not too far off something a normal pizza ad would say.

At last year’s draft, N.F.L. draft, which begins Thursday in Kansas City, Mo., draws an audience of upward of 11 million people every year for broadcasts across four networks. Even at its worst, the draft is a hit.

CNN —They say good things come to those who wait, and Drew Maggi has been waiting a long time for his major league call-up. The third baseman for the Altoona Curve – the Pittsburgh Pirates’ AAA affiliate – was drafted by the Pirates in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB draft but never played a big league game. Understandably, Maggi was pumped after spending his entire 13-year career in the minor leagues and celebrated alongside his teammates upon receiving the news. CNN —Two men are battling for control in Sudan, but stuck in the middle are the country’s people. Since the fighting began last Saturday, CNN has been regularly in touch with Iman Abu Garjah, a British-Sudanese doctor who became stuck while visiting family to celebrate Ramadan. It has also asked a federal court in Washington to dismiss claims in a 2020 antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department. And it has asked a federal court in Virginia to dismiss a complaint that the federal government filed this year. In its court filing in federal court in California on Thursday, Google asked that five claims be thrown out. Google argued it does not have a legal obligation to put other app stores in Android and, in fact, most Android phones come preloaded with more than one app store and others can be installed. Again, Google argued that game developers are not prevented from creating alternate app stores.

Adobe cloud business insightsDespite the drag of technical debt that the data suggests, some industry executives say it gets a bad reputation. In this sense, technical debt is a signal of iteration. Adobe head of strategic development for creative cloud partnerships Chris Duffey is looking to reshape technical debt. "I would offer to reframe technical debt as the value of insight gathering throughout the innovation creation process," Duffey said. Despite reduction of operational costs, legacy systems in the technical debt bucket are core operational functions that an organization can't just turn off.
Editor’s Note: Tennessee Rep. Justin J. Pearson is a Democrat and former community activist in Memphis. And yet, calls for common sense gun reform measures fall on deaf ears in our legislature where a Republican supermajority is wildly out of step with most people’s values. People in Tennessee aren’t even required to purchase a permit to publicly carry guns in the state of Tennessee. And we are required by the Tennessee State Constitution to object to policies injurious to the well-being of our constituents. My constituents sent me to the Tennessee State House to continue this work in their name.
