The House Oversight Committee wants to see more than 5,000 emails Vice President Biden sent using a pseudonym, while a third bank memorandum details further allegations of payments to the Biden family and its business associates. Images: AP/Zuma Press Composite: Mark KellyFive years after prosecutors began investigating his finances, three years after the laptop from hell was discovered, and two years after he published a memoir detailing his illegal drug use, Hunter Biden was charged Thursday for lying about his addiction when he bought a .38 revolver that ended up thrown in a trash can outside of a Delaware grocery store across the street from a high school.

On the face of it, Hunter Biden appears at risk of being sentenced to as long as 25 years in prison and $750,000 in fines if he is convicted on the three gun charges brought against him by federal prosecutors on Thursday. In reality, few people fitting Mr. Biden’s profile — a first-time, nonviolent offender accused of lying on a federal firearms application, who never used the gun (in his case, a Colt Cobra .38 that he held onto for less than two weeks five years ago) to commit a crime — get serious prison time for the offenses charged in the indictment. Just bringing the charges is out of the ordinary in some ways, former law enforcement officials say, and the legal basis of the prosecution is under constitutional challenge. Here’s a rundown of the accusations against President Biden’s son and what makes the case unusual. What are the charges?

The federal gun law used to indict Hunter Biden has a surprising critic: a conservative-led federal appeals courtThe panel ruled the law was unconstitutional in another case, but legal experts say it could come up in Biden's case. The president's son was indicted on three gun-related charges on Thursday after his original plea deal fell apart in court. But the appeals court panel ruled that it was too broad when it was used in Daniels' case and tossed out his conviction. Hunter Biden — the son of President Joe Biden — was indicted Thursday on three gun-related charges. Daniels' case is "readily distinguishable" from Biden's, former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy told Fox News, so it may not apply directly.

Inside the White House, neither was an unexpected development. Biden had just arrived back to the White House from a five-day swing through Asia when McCarthy formalized his impeachment plans Tuesday. An element of the White House strategy is keeping Biden focused on his governing duties while discrediting House Republican investigators. White House officials have also steadfastly refused to weigh in, describing it was a family matter. The president and first lady have kept him close amid his legal proceedings, and Hunter has appeared at family events and White House functions.

As Republicans plunge forward with an impeachment inquiry looking into a complex web of allegations against President Biden, his family and his administration, witnesses they have summoned for closed-door interviews in recent weeks have undercut or pushed back against some of their major claims. In testimony this month, three witnesses from the F.B.I. The emergence of fresh evidence this week undercutting Republicans’ claims against Mr. Biden is no coincidence. It suggests that, now that the G.O.P. has decided to plow ahead with a formal impeachment inquiry, the president’s allies, including Democrats on Capitol Hill who have access to the many investigative threads Republicans have pursued, have stepped up their efforts to reveal weaknesses in the case.

Now, his proxies in the House GOP are effectively weaponizing an impeachment inquiry of Biden to try to again destroy Trump’s potential opponent in the next presidential election. CNN —House Speaker Kevin McCarthy unilaterally gave his conference the green light to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. “There has to be an aha moment.” Rep. Darrell Issa of California, a Republican member of the House Judiciary Committee, told CNN. McCarthy – who spoke for 15 minutes before a scheduled presentation on their Biden impeachment inquiry – also expressed annoyance over their spending struggles and inability to find consensus, saying “hell yeah” he is frustrated. “Until I see the evidence of an impeachable offense, I’m not in favor of impeachment inquiry or impeachment.”Some moderates in swing districts, though, are expressing support for the impeachment inquiry, and dismissing concerns that it could negatively impact the GOP. Some House Republicans cautioned that an impeachment inquiry does not make articles of impeachment inevitable.

Insider Today: Big banks are screwed
  + stars: | 2023-09-14 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +8 min
It's the latest example of the pressure big banks are under to keep their place atop Wall Street. Before the announcement, the bank's share price was down almost 9% this year, trailing all of its fellow big bank peers in the US except Bank of America. Citi's overhaul represents how big banks are scrambling to stay on top of a financial world passing them by. CEO Jamie Dimon recently quipped he "wouldn't be a big buyer of a bank" in reference to proposed regulations requiring big banks to keep more money on the sidelines. Whether it's fintechs or so-called shadow banks, there's no shortage of players looking to offer services previously dominated by big banks.

Angry, frustrated and unable to lead a fractured and unruly Republican majority, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Thursday told the colleagues threatening to oust him: Do it. If you’re going to do it, go ahead and try, McCarthy told the Republicans behind closed doors. “File the f——- motion,” McCarthy said, using a profanity for emphasis, according to those in the private meeting. Led by Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, a core group of McCarthy critics is holding the threat of removal over him unless he meets conservative demands. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The United States is divided over the Republican impeachment probe of Democratic President Joe Biden, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Thursday, with a plurality of Americans supporting the idea. Some 41% of respondents said they supported the idea of Congress opening an impeachment investigation into Biden related to allegations involving his son Hunter Biden, while 35% were opposed and 24% said they were not sure. Republicans say they have found a "culture of corruption" around the business activities of Biden's son Hunter Biden that justifies an investigation. Biden's son Hunter pursued a wide range of foreign business ventures and has struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. Previous polls have found that many Americans believe Hunter Biden has received special treatment.

The Justice Department asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to pause a novel and sweeping ruling from a federal appeals court barring many kinds of contacts between administration officials and social media platforms. A unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit ruled last week that officials from the White House, the surgeon general’s office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the F.B.I. had most likely crossed constitutional lines in their bid to persuade platforms to take down posts about the coronavirus pandemic, claims of election fraud and Hunter Biden’s laptop. The panel, in an unsigned opinion, said the officials had become excessively entangled with the platforms or used threats to spur them to act. The panel entered an injunction forbidding many officials to coerce or significantly encourage social media companies to remove content protected by the First Amendment.

I watched him and I thought of Mitch McConnell clinging to a different lectern in a different city two weeks earlier, his physical struggle unquestionable but his thirst for dominance still unquenched. I thought of all the other Republicans — Mark Meadows, Peter Navarro, Lindsey Graham, the list is endless — who prostituted themselves for Trump. McCarthy right now is the main character in that story. And what a pathetic character he is. It wasn’t that the accumulated evidence had finally crossed some threshold or reached some tipping point.

Hunter Biden Was Indicted on Gun Charges

Federal prosecutors charged Hunter Biden, the president’s son, with lying about his drug use when he purchased a handgun in 2018. The indictment could lead to a high-profile trial of Biden next year, coinciding with his father’s re-election campaign. That agreement would have resolved the Justice Department’s long-running investigation without Biden serving prison time. Prosecutors could still file charges against Biden in that case. Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Tuesday that the House would proceed with a formal impeachment investigation focused on whether President Biden and his family benefited from what Republicans have contended were corrupt activities by Hunter Biden.
