Even as the court is sometimes finding wider-than-expected majorities for relatively limited outcomes, the nine justices are regularly in conflict over the meaning of decisions. A number of lower-profile cases have also sparked deep doctrinal divisions, even when the final vote count is lopsided. “It does seem, at least anecdotally, unusual to have this many separate opinions in cases with relatively lower stakes,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. The Supreme Court earlier this month tossed out an appeal from anti-abortion doctors challenging expanded access to the abortion pill mifepristone. Among them, Justice Sonia Sotomayor slammed the court’s majority opinion for its reliance on history to decide the trademark dispute.

Representative Lauren Boebert, the MAGA lightning rod who switched districts in Colorado to avoid being ousted from the House, won a crowded Republican primary on Tuesday in a conservative area of the state, all but ensuring that she will serve another two years in Congress. Ms. Boebert, a two-term Republican, overcame multiple challengers in the eastern plains of Colorado, nearly guaranteeing that she will prevail over her Democratic rival in November in the solidly red Fourth Congressional District. An outspoken right-wing lawmaker, Ms. Boebert first won her seat in 2020 after upsetting an incumbent Republican in a primary. In Congress, she has become known for her strident MAGA views and has become entangled in a series of personal scrapes, including being ejected from a Denver theater in a lascivious episode that was caught on closed-circuit camera. Facing a strong Democratic threat in the sprawling western Colorado district where she was first elected, Ms. Boebert chose to relocate to eastern Colorado to give herself a better chance of remaining in the House — and it appears to have worked.

Washington CNN —Hunter Biden’s Washington, DC, law license has been suspended, according to a newly released order from a local court that pointed to his recent conviction on three gun crimes. The order was issued by Chief Judge Anna Elizabeth Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals, which is the highest appellate court in DC and oversees the DC Bar. It is typical for bars in other states to reciprocate law license suspension or disbarment orders, meaning Biden’s license is also likely to soon be suspended in any other state where he is licensed. Biden has asked for a new trial in the gun case. During closing arguments in Biden’s gun trial, one of the prosecutors described him as a “Yale-educated defendant,” referring to the school where he earned his law degree.

The group, Stand Up America, is kicking off the $1 million campaign on the second anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned the right to an abortion and convulsed the country’s politics in its aftermath. For years, Republicans have made the courts — especially the Supreme Court — a central issue in federal elections. The vacancy on the Supreme Court during the 2016 election was a central force behind Donald J. Trump’s victory. Among voters who said the Supreme Court was the “most important factor” in their decision, 56 percent cast a ballot for Mr. Trump, according to exit polls. This year, Democrats are trying to harness that same energy: Though there is no current vacancy on the court, there is potential for a president to make appointments in the next administration.

CNN —Hunter Biden is requesting a new trial in his federal gun case, with his lawyers claiming that there was a procedural issue in the timing of the early June trial that resulted in a guilty verdict against him. His lawyers claim that the trial court did not have jurisdiction over his case because of appeals that he had filed challenging his prosecution. The defense team says that the conviction must be wiped away because, even though the appeals court had rejected the appeals by the time the trial started, it had not issued what’s known as a “mandate” – the procedural maneuver that effectively notifies a lower court of ruling made by a higher court in an appeal. Biden’s lawyers are pointing to the absence of a mandate sending the case back to the trial court after the 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals handed down rulings rejecting two of his appeals in late May. “The Third Circuit, however, did not then and has not yet issued its mandate as to the orders dismissing either appeal,” his lawyers wrote.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J. Frommer.

Two years ago, when the Supreme Court decided New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, it created a jurisprudential mess that scrambled American gun laws. On Friday, not only did the cleanup begin, but the Supreme Court cleared the way for one of the most promising legal innovations for preventing gun violence: red flag laws. Before Bruen, lower courts had struggled to establish a uniform legal test for evaluating gun restrictions, and the Supreme Court hadn’t provided any clarity. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion in a 6-to-3 decision split along ideological lines. Under a fair reading of Thomas’s opinion, lower courts would be hard pressed to uphold any gun restriction unless you could point to an obvious historical match.

Sure enough, the next day began a historic ascent of Apple stock, an in-your-face rally that many thought made no sense. There's a coalescence of two themes, high speed, accelerated computing and increasingly intelligent AI, and neither works without Nvidia chips. I know that it seems impossible to ponder Nvidia's stock going any higher or passing Apple and Microsoft and staying ahead of it. Ask yourself, does any company match Jensen and Nvidia right now? I say let others be baffled over the Apple versus Microsoft versus Nvidia conundrum.

He looked at them, Mr. Brazil said, “and he shot.” Mr. Brazil, a 65-year-old minister, was shot in the forehead above his right eye. He worked his shift at Pizza Palace in Manhattan’s Inwood neighborhood late Sunday. But the man, Alejandro Ramirez, never got to the stop. He made it only a few blocks before he was fatally shot in the chest. Mr. Ramirez, 45, was one of two people killed in a shooting at West 207th Street and 10th Avenue around 11:40 p.m. on Father’s Day; another Bronx man, Michael James, 44, was fatally shot, in the face and torso. The number of shootings across New York City has dropped compared with last year, but that was little consolation for a neighborhood shaken by the Father’s Day shooting, and for a city girding for summer’s traditional increase in gun violence.

The Supreme Court, in an 8-to-1 decision, ruled today that the government can take guns away from people subject to restraining orders for domestic violence. In particular, a 2022 ruling from the court vastly expanded Second Amendment rights and created a new test to assess gun laws by looking at historical practices to judge their constitutionality. Using that test, a federal judge had ruled that it was unconstitutional to take guns from domestic abusers. But today, Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, said that Second Amendment rights do have limits. He argued that the government has a better way to disarm dangerous people: by prosecuting them for criminal violence.

Tracking a Single Day at the National Domestic Violence Hotline

Tracking a Single Day at the National Domestic Violence Hotline They call from work, to avoid being overheard, or from home before someone returns. The legal battles have underscored the pervasiveness of domestic violence and the strains on existing support for survivors. To capture a snapshot of the experiences of domestic violence survivors, The New York Times observed some of the calls and messages the hotline received in one day. Congress approved creation of a national hotline dedicated to domestic violence in 1994, including it in the landmark Violence Against Women Act. Josie Slawik, who began working to support domestic violence survivors after she arrived at an El Paso shelter, was there when the hotline took its first call in 1996.

Supreme Court Upholds Law Disarming Domestic Abusers

The Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the government may disarm a Texas man subject to a domestic violence order, limiting the sweep of its earlier blockbuster decision that vastly expanded gun rights. That decision, issued in 2022, struck down a New York law that put strict limits on carrying guns outside the home. The new case, United States v. Rahimi, explored the scope of that new test. Only Justice Clarence Thomas, the author of the majority opinion in the 2022 decision, dissented. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said that Second Amendment rights had limits.

That sent lower courts scurrying into historical analyses to figure out if modern gun laws had some connection to the 18th Century. Roberts’ opinion said that lower courts were misunderstanding what the majority had said in that ruling. But Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a member of the court’s liberal wing, suggested it was the high court’s fault for not providing clarity for lower courts to follow. One deals with a Pennsylvania man’s challenge to a federal law prohibiting felons, including those who are non-violent, from possessing firearms. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar presented that argument with an eye toward several other challenges pending to similar federal gun prohibitions that involve non-violent criminal activity.

CNN —The Supreme Court upheld a federal law Friday that bars guns for domestic abusers, rejecting an argument pressed by gun rights groups that the prohibition violated the Second Amendment. The 8-1 decision lands as the nation continues to grapple with gun violence and mass shootings. A roiling political debate over firearms has left Washington unable to pass new gun laws. The decision could help shore up similar federal gun regulations that have been challenged since the Supreme Court vastly expanded gun rights in 2022. Rahimi’s lawyers claimed that the Supreme Court’s blockbuster decision two years ago meant that the law on domestic violence orders could not be squared with the Constitution.
