chatbot ChatGPT last year, the San Francisco start-up OpenAI added digital guardrails meant to prevent its system from doing things like generating hate speech and disinformation. Now a paper from researchers at Princeton, Virginia Tech, Stanford and IBM says those guardrails aren’t as sturdy as A.I. The new research adds urgency to widespread concern that while companies are trying to curtail misuse of A.I., they are overlooking ways it can still generate harmful material. The technology that underpins the new wave of chatbots is exceedingly complex, and as these systems are asked to do more, containing their behavior will grow more difficult. for good uses and keep its unlawful uses behind a locked door,” said Scott Emmons, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in this kind of technology.

While generative AI startups are attracting more investment overall, 2023 could be a notably slow year for venture capital investment in sports AI following several years of activity, according to new data from PitchBook. The year could mark the lowest level of investment in the sector since 2018 when PitchBook tracked just under $200 million in VC activity. Both those years had 114 VC investments, compared to just 54 in 2023 through mid-October, PitchBook data shows. ChatGPT can now respond with images and search the web

OpenAI, the company behind the viral chatbot, has officially launched real-time internet browsing for ChatGPT, three weeks after reintroducing the beta version of the capability — but it has been a significantly bumpy ride. But one of OpenAI's goals has been to expand ChatGPT's data — and search engine capabilities — into the here and now. In March, the company experimented with a ChatGPT web-browsing plugin for a limited number of users. The company has been slowly rolling out the feature again, after allowing site owners to opt out of the web crawling. Two of the foremost competitors in that race are OpenAI with ChatGPT and Google with its competitor, Bard.

U.S. tackles loopholes in curbs on AI chip exports to China
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The latest crackdown on tech exports to China coincides with U.S. efforts to thaw difficult relations between the world's two largest economies. One, named the H800, has as much computing power at some settings used in AI work as the company's more powerful but blocked H100 chip. The U.S. now plans to introduce new guidelines for AI chips that will restrict certain advanced datacenter AI chips that are not currently captured, the U.S. official said. In order to keep AI chips the U.S. views as too powerful from China, the official said the U.S. planned to remove one of the parameters — the "bandwidth parameter" — it has used to restrict exports of certain AI data center chips. This would likely mean the speed at which AI chips talk to each other would be reduced.

The new rules will block some AI chips that fall just under current technical parameters while demanding companies report shipments of others, said the official, who provided information on condition of anonymity. Last year, government restrictions kept Nvidia (NVDA.O), the world's most valuable chipmaker, from shipping two of its most advanced AI chips to Chinese customers, chips that have become the industry standard for developing chatbots and other AI systems. The U.S. now plans to introduce new guidelines for AI chips that will restrict certain advanced datacenter AI chips not currently captured, the official said. The update to the October 2022 rules is also meant to cover AI chips as technology evolves. The new restrictions may also close a loophole that gives Chinese companies access to American artificial intelligence chips through Chinese units located overseas, as Reuters reported last week.

In an invitation-only Discord chat, Googlers have been discussing the bot. First announced in February, Google's Bard chatbot is one of the company's flagship generative AI products. The launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT months earlier reportedly put the company on high alert and led to resources being poured into generative AI projects. This is also not the first time Googlers have raised doubts about Google's generative AI push.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Oct 12 (Reuters) - China has published proposed security requirements for firms offering services powered by generative artificial intelligence, including a blacklist of sources that cannot be used to train AI models. Generative AI, popularised by the success of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, learns how to take actions from past data, and creates new content like text or images based on that training. The committee proposes conducting a security assessment of each body of content used to train public-facing generative AI models, with those containing "more than 5% of illegal and harmful information" to be blacklisted. The draft rules also state that information censored on the Chinese internet should not be used to train models. The draft security requirements published on Wednesday require organisations training these AI models to seek the consent of individuals whose personal information, including biometric data, is used for training purposes.
