Nov. 21 marks the beginning of pro-European mass protests in Ukraine in 2013 that led to the "Maidan" revolution in February 2014 and the ousting of Ukraine's then pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovich. The Kremlin described Ukraine's 2014 revolution, which Kyiv is commemorating on Tuesday, as a foreign-sponsored coup. Anti-government protesters guard the perimeter of Independence Square, known as Maidan, on Feb. 19, 2014, in Kyiv, Ukraine. "The fact that it was sponsored from abroad has been acknowledged, directly and indirectly, by representatives of foreign countries. The 2014 Maidan revolution marked a more definite split with Russia which, shortly afterward, invaded and annexed Crimea.

A smartphone with a displayed NVIDIA logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. But the red-hot market for AI chips is playing out in the context of vastly expanded U.S. export controls on what Nvidia can sell to China. Jacob Bourne, analyst at Insider Intelligence, said that those China-focused chips could consume vital research resources at Nvidia for products that could end up banned just like its first round of China market chips. Rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.O) had earlier touted the quantity of high-bandwidth memory on one of its competing AI chips. Chinese tech company Huawei's (HWT.UL) AI chip is also gaining traction from local firms as U.S. pressure makes it hard to access Nvidia chips.

Czech coach Silhavy quits due to barrage of criticism

Silhavy took charge of the national team in 2018 after they failed to qualify for the World Cup. "Sometimes I don't understand why, the anger and aggression (is directed towards me)," Silhavy was quoted as saying by news website iDnes.cz on Tuesday. His departure follows the team's 3-0 win over 10-man Moldova on Monday, which secured them a place in Euro 2024. Silhavy said the actions of the players -- who all featured in Friday's 1-1 draw with Poland -- disappointed him and helped confirm his decision to quit. "I don't think the guys did it for me to quit," Silhavy said.

Jensen Huang, president of Nvidia, holding the Grace hopper superchip CPU used for generative AI at the Supermicro keynote presentation during Computex 2023. When Nvidia reports fiscal third-quarter results Tuesday, analysts are expecting to see revenue growth of over 170%. Heading into the Thanksgiving holiday, Wall Street will be closely scrutinizing the company that's been at the heart of this year's artificial intelligence boom. In particular, the emergence of AMD in the generative AI market presents a new dynamic for Nvidia, which has mostly had the AI graphics processing unit (GPU) market to itself. "NVDA needs to forcefully counter the narrative its products are too expensive for generative AI inference," the Bank of America analysts wrote.

A New York judge on Friday denied a request by former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants for a mistrial in the $250 million civil business fraud case against them. The ruling came two days after attorneys for Trump Sr., Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, the Trump Organization and its top executives argued that the case had been undermined by political bias. In addition to seeking $250 million in damages, James wants to permanently bar Trump and his two adult sons from running a New York business. Engoron has already found the defendants liable for fraud and ordered the cancellation of their New York business certificates. ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia prosecutor pursuing a case against former President Donald Trump and others on Wednesday asked a judge to revoke the bond of defendant Harrison Floyd, saying he has been intimidating witnesses and codefendants in the case. Floyd, Trump and 17 others were indicted in August by a Fulton County grand jury, accused of participating in a wide-ranging scheme to illegally try to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. The charges against Floyd stem from allegations of harassment of Ruby Freeman, a Fulton County election worker who had been falsely accused of election fraud by Trump and his supporters. Chris Kachouroff, an attorney for Floyd, said District Attorney Fani Willis' attempt to revoke his client's bond was nonsense, adding, “She's not going to get it granted." A recently edgy bond market gobbled all that up. Funds' bonds allocation in November soared 18 points over the month to leave them net 19% overweight - almost 3 standard deviations above long-term averages. Asset managers' overweight bond positions - or at least those in government bonds and U.S. Treasuries - tends to be mirrored by big short positions in Treasury futures among speculative hedge funds. CFTC numbers show the scale of that speculative 'Big Short' on the flipside of the mounting 'Big Long' built by regular asset managers. Lamont points out that U.S. Treasury yields and investment grade corporate debt yields would have to rise about another 100bps for the capital losses to wipe out current yields.

New Hampshire Democrats announced on Wednesday that they will hold their presidential primary on Jan. 23 – flouting President Joe Biden and the national party’s plans to anoint South Carolina with the first primary contest. Biden had already elected not to register in New Hampshire, and his name won’t appear on the Democratic presidential primary ballot next year. But the move isn’t without repercussions by the Democratic National Committee, including the potential loss of state delegates to the party convention. The Granite State has held the so-called “first in the nation” primary for more than a century, and a state law enacted in 1975 requires it to occur at least seven days before any other state’s primary or on the second Tuesday in March.
