TOKYO (AP) — The Japanese boys-band production company at the center of an unfolding sexual abuse scandal, Johnny & Associates, chose three former judges Wednesday to head its effort to compensate hundreds of victims. “We recognize that the late Johnny Kitagawa carried out sexual assaults over a long period, and we apologize to the victims from the bottom of our hearts,” the company said. Among the latest was Kao Corp., a chemical and cosmetics company, which cited “considerations for people’s various feelings” on Tuesday. McDonald’s Japan has also said it will stop using Johnny’s stars in future deals, but past ads featuring them remained on its official site. Johnny’s stars are extremely popular, leading to sponsorship revenue and hit TV shows.

Spanish court rejects appeals to suspend banking tax payments

MADRID, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Spain's High Court has rejected appeals by lenders Bankinter (BKT.MC), Sabadell (SABE.MC) and Cajasur to suspend payments of the extraordinary banking tax while it reviews the levy's validity, El Economista newspaper reported on Monday. Spain approved in December a temporary 4.8% levy on banks' net interest income and net commissions above a threshold of 800 million euros ($861 million) as part of measures aimed at easing the cost of living of ordinary Spaniards amid high inflation. Some banks and associations objected to the tax and filed challenges before the High Court, while the European Central Bank also warned of adverse effects on the banking system. The High Court could not immediately confirm or deny the report, which also said that the court had refused to raise the question of the levy's constitutionality before the Court of Justice of the European Union. While researchers found significant associations between developing diabetes in night owls who worked during the day, they did not find an association for night owls who went to work later in the day or worked overnight shifts. One published in June found night owls were more likely to die early, mostly due to bad habits they developed when they stayed up late, such as drinking and smoking. A 2022 study determined night owls were more sedentary, had lower aerobic fitness levels and burned less fat at rest and while active than early birds. Night owls were also more likely to be insulin-resistant, a precursor to diabetes. Night owls have higher levels of visceral body fat in the abdominal region, a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

So you may have heard about girl dinner, hot girl walks, girl rotting. When we haven’t been hot girl walking, we have been girl rotting or laying in our beds and doing nothing for hours and hours on end. We’ve been having our hot girl dinners, as I mentioned. The trick of a hot girl walk and girl dinner and hot girl summer and even girl rotting in our beds is that these things happen outside the influence of the male gaze. You should go out on your hot girl walk, and you should certainly think about the things you’re grateful for and how hot you are.

During second-quarter earnings reports in August and September, nearly two dozen retailers said shrink has continued to weigh on profits. During its second quarter earnings call with analysts, the company said shrink was in line with the year-ago period. Over the last few quarters, more and more retailers have called out shrink as a drain on profits and blamed theft for those losses. Others that loosely blame shrink and theft for plummeting profits without providing much more explanation may be trying to obfuscate internal issues, said Lapinsky. Contrary to other retailers, shrink was the largest drag on Ulta's earnings during fiscal 2022, according to a securities filing.

The only other countries with higher majorities agreeing that China is a global threat were Japan (91%) and South Korea (86%). Among respondents who do consider the U.S. a global threat, the highest share of agreement came from China at about 75%, while agreement eclipsed 60% among those from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and New Zealand. Half a million dollars' worth of extra virgin olive oil was stolen in Spain last week, El Mundo reported. That's because Spain's olive oil production dropped by 50% this year compared to the previous harvest. The olive oil was stored in a warehouse waiting to be bottled when it was stolen, according to local newspaper Diario Córdoba. The cost of a bottle of extra virgin olive oil has jumped about 15% since mid-July in Spanish supermarkets, Bloomberg reported. "Everyone is worried because the price is going to keep climbing, and olive oil is truly becoming liquid gold," Parra said, per Bloomberg.

Instead, “the increased risk for anorexia nervosa can be attributed entirely to ADHD,” Freuer said. Researchers looked for a link between ADHD and seven mental health conditions: anorexia nervosa, anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depression, PTSD, schizophrenia and at least one suicide attempt. “Also on the list are Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, substance use disorders, eating disorders, learning disabilities and sleep dysfunction,” he added. Last summer, two data centers in London experienced heatwave-linked failures, with the incident affecting clinical IT systems at a number of hospitals. Data centers have become "a very important aspect of running entire business models, and even our day-to-day lives. Losing the information processed by data centers would be detrimental not only to companies and individuals, but also governments and society as a whole. This puts the firms that develop and operate data centers in a tricky position, not least because today's facilities are resource hungry. Companies can deploy a range of innovations to put these metrics at the core of tomorrow's data centers.

SEC Chair Gary Gensler said the rules will increase transparency and competition in the private funds industry, which oversees around $20 trillion in assets and has been accused by advocacy groups of opacity and conflicts of interest. The changes require private funds to issue quarterly fee and performance reports and to perform annual audits. Bryan Corbett, chief executive officer of the Managed Funds Association (MFA), said the rules will increase costs for investors and curb competition, he added. A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Cajamarca, Peru Reuters —Archaeologists in northern Peru have unearthed a 3,000-year-old tomb which they believe might have honored an elite religious leader in the Andean country some three millennia ago. Two seals were also found along the upper edges of the tomb, one with an anthropomorphic face looking east and another with a jaguar design facing west. Archaeologists hold pieces of pottery from the tomb, which also contained decorated ceramic bowls and seals indicating ancient ritual body paint used for people of elite standing. “Though this person is a man, the associations are very peculiar,” said Seki. Last year’s find of the “Priest of the Pututos,” however, is believed to be older.

Seafood is having a bad week in East Asia, which is bad news for a region where it’s a major part of the diet. Experts say Japan’s discharge into the ocean of treated radioactive wastewater from the ruined Fukushima nuclear power plant, which began on Thursday, does not and will not pose health risks to people who eat seafood. On Thursday, the Chinese government widened a ban on seafood imports to include all of Japan instead of only some regions. The wastewater release has been heavily politicized and fueled deep anxiety over seafood in both China and South Korea, leaving some wondering whether sushi, sashimi and other products were still safe. At Noryangjin Fish Market in Seoul on Friday, fish vending associations had put up banners urging consumers to not give in to paranoia.
