Wintershall Dea urges Germany to clear CO2 exports for storage

FRANKFURT, Jan 16 (Reuters) - German oil and gas producer Wintershall Dea (WINT.UL) (BASFn.DE) urged Berlin on Monday to clear exports of carbon dioxide to European neighbours that would be buried in so-called carbon capture and storage facilities (CCS). Wintershall is involved in various CCS projects, including in Norway and Denmark, which aim to store CO2 in depleted oil and gas fields. The early capture of CO2 emissions in the production process and their subsequent storage could help achieve climate targets and provide a new area of activity for hydrocarbon exploration companies. Unavoidable residual emissions in Germany currently amount to well over 40 million tonnes per year from industries such as chemicals and cement, Langemann said. Wintershall Dea plans to build up a business capturing 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 per annum by 2040.
OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on Monday said China's reopening is "overwhelmingly positive" in the global fight to tackle surging inflation. "We certainly very much welcome the easing of Covid related restrictions in China," Cormann told CNBC's Joumanna Bercetche at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Beijing reported on Saturday that almost 60,000 people with Covid had died in hospital since the country dropped its strict Covid restrictions last month, a sharp increase from previous figures. "One of the drivers of inflation was very much the supply shock related to global supply not being able to keep up with global demand … as swiftly as was required," Cormann said. "And so, China coming back into the global market in earnest and supply chains functioning more efficiently will help bring inflation down.
Two philosopher professors said they caught their students submitting essays written by ChatGPT. If students don't confess to using the program, professors say it can be hard to prove. Antony Aumann, a religious studies and philosophy professor at Fordham University, told Insider he had caught two students submitting essays written by ChatGPT. When the chatbot said it was 99% sure the essays were written by ChatGPT, he forwarded the results to the students. Christopher Bartel, a professor of philosophy at Appalachian State University, said that while the grammar in AI-generated essays is almost perfect, the substance tends to lack detail.
Eli Salzmann's Neuberger Berman Large Cap Value Fund has beaten 99% of peers in the past five years. Here are seven stocks that Salzmann loves right now, even if the economy weakens. Value stocks have been in vogue for the past year or so, but in the decade before that, investors only seemed to care about growth stocks. The two indexes were weighed down by lagging value stocks, but still managed to fetch returns 316% and 240%, respectively. During that time, many value fund managers drifted toward growth names, said Eli Salzmann, the portfolio manager of the Neuberger Berman Large Cap Value Fund (NBPIX), in a recent interview with Insider.

Tributes to Lisa Marie Presley continued to pour in on Friday. Lisa Marie Presley is survived by her mother, daughter Riley Keough, 33, and 14-year-old twin daughters Harper and Finley Lockwood.
Buzz, a fresh take on the iconic vehicle of the Volkswagen brand, during its world premiere in Paris, France, March 9, 2022. Group sales rose 14.3% in the fourth quarter, but the outlook for 2023 remains clouded by weak economies and supply chain shortages, extended executive sales committee member Hildegard Wortmann said. Audi, Lamborghini and Bentley weathered 2022 better than Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Skoda, with deliveries down around 4% at the premium brands and down 9% for mass-market vehicles. Group deliveries fell 7% versus 2021. The Volkswagen Group's deliveries were up 12% in the second half of the year, but the full-year figure was dragged down by a drop of over a fifth in the first half.
BoE's Mann does not see risk of raising rates too high

My reading is we're not there yet," Mann said in a question-and-answer session after giving a lecture at Alliance Manchester Business School. The BoE raised its main interest rate to 3.5% in December from 3%; Mann voted for a bigger increase to 3.75%. Mann said she assessed the risk of over-tightening based on a range of metrics, including mortgage rates, equity valuations and currency strength, which fed into broader gauges of financial conditions, as well as financial market expectations. Financial markets see a 60% chance that the BoE will raise interest rates to 4% next month, and a 40% chance of a smaller rate rise to 3.75%. Rates are seen by markets as most likely to peak at 4.5% in the middle of the year, but with a high chance that the BoE could stop sooner at 4.25%.
BERLIN, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich want to sign a goalkeeper following the injury to Germany captain Manuel Neuer but the options on the transfer market in the winter period are limited, coach Julian Nagelsmann said on Thursday. Speaking in Doha, Qatar, at the end of a one-week training camp ahead of the Bundesliga season restart next week, Nagelsmann said that, while 34-year-old Sven Ulreich was ready to step in to replace Neuer, the club still needed another keeper. Nagelsmann said the choices behind Ulreich were limited to younger keepers, including 19-year-old Johannes Schenk, with no experience of top league matches. Bayern, top of the Bundesliga, resume their hunt for a record-extending 11th straight league crown against RB Leipzig on Jan. 20. "We want to put ourselves on track for the big match against top league rival Leipzig next week," he said.

The British investment bank has performed well in recent quarters, especially in fixed income trading, but a blunder in the United States that saw it sell more securities than permitted has cost it hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties. CITIGROUPCiti (C.N) eliminated dozens of jobs across its investment banking division, as a dealmaking slump continues to weigh on Wall Street's biggest banks, Bloomberg News reported on Nov. 8. The cost savings reported are likely to involve more job cuts than previously announced for the first wave of reductions, including in its wealth business, Reuters reported. DEUTSCHE BANKDeutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), Germany's largest bank, cut staff in its investment bank's origination and advisory teams in October, in a move than affected mostly junior bankers. MORGAN STANLEY (MS.N)In December, the investment bank slashed about 2% of its workforce, a source familiar with the company's plans told Reuters.

TAIPEI, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen called on Germany on Tuesday to help maintain "regional order" during a meeting with senior German lawmakers who are visiting the island on a trip that Beijing has condemned. "We look forward to Taiwan, Germany and other democratic partners jointly maintaining the regional order and prosperity." Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the head of Germany's parliamentary defence committee and a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's junior coalition partner Free Democrats (FDP), told Tsai that Germany and Taiwan are friends. Russia's invasion of Ukraine was a wake up call for the whole world, Strack-Zimmermann said. China has expressed anger at the trip, with its foreign ministry on Monday alluding to Germany's World War Two past.
Once considered taboo in film and television, gay entertainers and characters will be hard to miss at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Some of the evenings most nominated films — including sci-fi dramedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and psychological thriller “Tár,” — and TV series that include “The White Lotus” and “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” — star LGBTQ actors or feature fictional queer characters. And to top off the evening, the Golden Globes will honor gay television writer and producer Ryan Murphy, perhaps best known for co-creating “Glee,” “Pose” and the “American Horror Story” franchise, with a lifetime achievement award. While this year’s pool of Golden Globe nominees ups the awards ceremony’s queer factor, many of the most anticipated wins involve seemingly straight actors playing queer characters. The Golden Globes airs on Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

At the southern end of Mendocino county, the small towns of Point Arena and Gualala have been largely without power for around 24 hours. About 2,500 households and businesses were without power in the county, which is home to about 91,000 people. California's storied coast road, Highway 1, is closed in four places in Mendocino County because of fallen trees, the California Department of Transportation said. Research shows most of the well-paying tech jobs on offer today are in non-tech industries. And yet research suggests that well-paying tech jobs are abundant — they're just not in the tech industry. Around 60% of the top 100 employers of tech talent were from sectors like healthcare, consulting, defense, and banking. Another pro-tip: Using the language of the industry you're targeting. "Exceeding in the softer skills is something that will set aside most of the tech talent from each other honestly."
"We won't run into the same issue as 'Game of Thrones,'" co-creator Neil Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter. "Game of Thrones" ran out of source material after catching up with the unfinished book series. Neil Druckmann, the show's co-creator who also developed the game, told The Hollywood Reporter that the series won't stray from the source material. "We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games," Druckmann said in the interview. "We won't run into the same issue as 'Game of Thrones' since 'Part II' doesn't end on a cliffhanger," he added, referring to the game's sequel, "The Last of Us Part II."
This could be a very good year for one lucky winner of the fourth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. "The curse of the lottery losers is very real," said Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago-based lawyer who has represented several recent lottery winners. One of the very first decisions a winner must make — whether to accept the jackpot as a lump sum or as an annuity — often ends up being their downfall, Stoltmann said. The upfront cash option — which most jackpot winners choose — for this drawing is $403.8 million, as of midday Tuesday. Still, "over 90% of winners take the immediate lump sum," Stoltmann said.
The incident reflects what the U.S. calls a concerning trend of unsafe intercept practices by the Chinese military. The U.S. Air Force RC-135 aircraft was in international airspace on Dec. 21 when it was intercepted by a J-11 fighter jet from the Chinese navy, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement. The Chinese jet positioned itself about 10 feet from the RC-135’s wing and then drifted within 20 feet of its nose as the American plane maintained its course and speed, leading it to take evasive maneuvers. China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, where it has territorial disputes with Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and others. Austin also raised the issue at a meeting in November with Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe.
Burnout is a "very common" workplace mental health issue caused by chronic and unmanaged stress, said Dr. Oliver Suendermann, clinical director of Intellect, a Singapore-based mental health support startup. With a slew of trickle-down effects that could harm your mental and physical health, burnout is a slippery slope that should be avoided. CNBC Make It spoke with experts and coaches who shared some red flags that should ring alarm bells, and green flags that can indicate a lower burnout risk. This can include providing managers with training on mental health, he added. Suendermann, who works for Intellect which offers a mental health support app, said some companies also help connect employees with professional coaches.
Southwest Airlines received more than $7 billion from that program. However, analysts say, Southwest’s service meltdown is unrelated to the taxpayer assistance the airline received in 2020. Cancelled Southwest Airlines flights are seen on the flight schedules at LaGuardia Airport, Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, in New York. In April 2020, airline passenger traffic plummeted 96% and stayed 60% below 2019 levels in 2020, according to the US Government Accountability Office. “The problems at Southwest Airlines over the last several days go beyond weather,” she said in a statement.
"Incendiary devices" were found at a Jehovah’s Witness hall following the apparent murder-suicide of a married couple there on Christmas Day, according to Colorado police. "An adult female was shot and killed by an adult male, who then shot and killed himself," the police said in a statement Sunday. The devices at the scene were rendered safe, police said, adding there were no additional suspects. "This kind of violence is always shocking but particularly on Christmas Day," Thornton Mayor Jan Kulmann said in a statement on Twitter. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
