☆ Treasury yields slide ahead of July jobs report

ET, the 10-year Treasury yield was down by over 4 basis points at 3.933%, remaining below the 4%. The yield on the 2-year Treasury was last around 5 basis points lower at 4.116%. U.S. Treasury yields were lower on Friday as investors looked ahead to the July jobs report and digested the interest rate outlook. The U.S. Labor Department's jobs report for July is slated for Friday, and will provide investors with insights into the state of the U.S. economy. The Federal Reserve earlier in the week kept rates unchanged at their latest meeting but hinted that a September rate cut was on the table, sending Treasury yields lower.

US stocks fell after a weak July jobs report raised concerns of a slowing economy. The US added 114,000 jobs in July, below estimates of 175,000, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4.3%. Intel and Amazon's weak earnings reports also contributed to Friday's stock market decline. The unemployment rate also unexpectedly rose to 4.3% from 4.1%, its highest level since October 2021. The 10-Year US Treasury yield plunged nearly 20 basis points to a 2024 low of 3.80% immediately after the jobs report was released.

Florida prepares for potential damage. With heavy rainfall of up to 12 inches expected over the next seven days, Florida is bracing for the threat of flooding, along with gusty winds and erosion. Just after 11 a.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours, for the southwest coast of the Florida peninsula, from East Cape Sable to Bonita Beach. Other areas of the southern and western coasts of the peninsula, as well as parts of the Florida Keys, were under a tropical storm watch, forecasters said. The governor’s order covers Orange County and Osceola County, and travel could be disrupted for the throngs of summer visitors who go to Orlando and the theme parks at Universal Studios Florida and Walt Disney World.

A man previously identified as a leader in a “vicious” white supremacist gang was one of three inmates killed earlier this week in a Nevada prison fight, officials said. In a news release Wednesday, the Nevada Department of Corrections said an investigation into the incident is ongoing and the prison remains on lockdown. Aurélien Quinion, a French race-walker who competed on Thursday, had a dramatically different experience ahead of the 20km final. Quinion instead was at his wife’s bedside at 2 a.m. Paris time as she gave birth to their baby girl, Charlie. The French athlete eventually got about 30 minutes of something approaching sleep before getting in a taxi and heading to the race, less than six hours after Charlie entered the world. In a statement released by the French Athletics Federation, Quinion said mother and daughter were both doing well. Quinion finished ninth in the event, setting a personal best of 1:19:56.
