Prosecutors have accused him of stealing $8 billion in one of the biggest financial frauds in U.S. history. During his second day of testimony on Monday - when the prosecution began its cross-examination - Bankman-Fried said "I don't recall" at least 28 times. Closing arguments probably will take several hours, and jurors are not expected to get the case before Thursday. He has been jailed since August after Kaplan revoked his bail, having concluded that he likely tampered with witnesses.

The frontrunner for the 2024 Republican nomination for the presidency was also hit with a partial gag order in a federal criminal case accusing him of trying to overturn his 2020 election loss. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington on Monday barred him from verbally attacking U.S. prosecutors, court staff and potential witnesses, pointing to disparaging social media posts. Trump plans to appeal that order.

Engoron said in the order that a social media post by Trump attacking the judge's clerk - which was deleted from the former president's Truth Social platform - had remained visible on his campaign website two weeks after he had ordered it taken down. Trump at times has appeared in person at the ongoing trial, attacking James and Engoron in inflammatory remarks to reporters outside of the courtroom. Trump, who has sought to portray the case as intended to hurt him politically, has denied wrongdoing and defended his asset valuations.

Prosecutors in the criminal trial against FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried compared one of the defense's arguments to a scene in the 1994 film "Dumb and Dumber," in which actor Jim Carrey says IOUs are "as good as money." Funds also allegedly went to paying for things such as a $35 million property in the Bahamas and political donations. Customers were ultimately unable to retrieve much of their money as FTX and Alameda were simultaneously imploding. In a footnote, the prosecution writes, "A popular movie from the 1990s illustrates the point: a briefcase, once filled with money, is not the same as a briefcase later filled with IOUs." In "Dumb and Dumber," when the briefcase reaches its owner, it's filled with paper.
