Opinion | Trump’s Lust for Expulsion Has Deep Roots
  + stars: | 2024-07-09 | by ( Jamelle Bouie | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Last week, millions of Americans celebrated our nation’s founding and with it our history of political and social inclusion. It is this history, of newcomers adding to the tapestry of the American experience, that is the foundation of our creedal nationalism, of the contested belief that “Americans are united by principles despite their ethnic, cultural and religious plurality.”I was at an Independence Day celebration of this belief at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s mountaintop home and plantation in Virginia, where dozens of new American citizens were welcomed into the national community with a festive naturalization ceremony, opened — as you might imagine — with a solemn reading of the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Less central to our collective cultural memory than our history of inclusion — but no less central to American history as it actually unfolded — is a politics of expulsion, of the removal of people, groups and even ideas deemed incompatible with the national spirit, narrowly defined. “The suspicion of outsiders and quick resort to expulsion,” the historian Steven Hahn observes in “Illiberal America: A History,” is one of the defining features of the illiberal current in the American political tradition. If illiberalism — in stark contrast to the universalist claims of liberalism — ties rights and belonging to membership in specific communities of race, ethnicity, religion and gender; if it is “marked by social and cultural exclusions” and sees “violence as a legitimate and potentially necessary means” of wielding power, then it is only natural that illiberal movements or societies would wield expulsion as one method to discipline dissidents and outsiders.

Paramount agrees to merge with Skydance
  + stars: | 2024-07-08 | by ( Lillian Rizzo | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Paramount Global will merge with Skydance, capping off a months-long negotiation that included various twists and turns, and will see the Redstone family step away from control of the storied movie studio and media company. Paramount's special committee agreed to the merger on Sunday, days after Shari Redstone's National Amusements, the controlling shareholder of Paramount, once again reached a preliminary agreement with Skydance. The latest iteration of the deal will see the buying consortium, which includes RedBird Capital Partners and KKR, invest more than $8 billion into Paramount and to acquire National Amusements. The deal gives National Amusements an enterprise value of $2.4 billion, which includes $1.75 billion in equity. A completed Skydance merger would mark a major shift for the ownership of Paramount, as well as for Hollywood as a whole.

But he is definitely leaning on the idea that he's building a media company that is also a tech company. That's partly because David Ellison isn't a tech mogul. But this reminds me a bit of the 2015 era when digital publishers like BuzzFeed and Vox Media told investors they weren't media companies but tech companies that made media. The bigger problem with the tech + media pitch isn't that tech and media aren't intertwined. AdvertisementThe real problem that Paramount — and just about every other big media company — has these days isn't that its tech isn't good enough.

Here are three true things about President Biden: He has done an excellent job as president. And he should step aside as his party’s nominee for president, probably in favor of Vice President Kamala Harris. Anyone who has been following American politics and policy has to be aware just how remarkable Biden’s achievements have been. But Biden, despite having only a razor-thin legislative majority, enacted major investments in infrastructure, advanced technology and green energy. Almost as many voters give credit for infrastructure to Trump — whose repeated promises to come up with a plan became a running joke — as to Biden, who got the job done.

Joyce Beatty of Ohio told CNN's Eva McKend that Democratic lawmakers shouldn't turn against Biden. A huge "what if" for Biden is if a high-ranking Black lawmaker calls on him to exit the race. But will it help him with Black voters in the coming weeks and months? That November, Biden won 92% of the Black vote, compared to Trump's 8% support, according to the Pew Research Center.

It could help former President Donald Trump's hush-money conviction survive the US Supreme Court immunity opinion. Trump's lawyers are about to file what's known as a 330.30 motion to set aside the verdict. The Supreme Court presidential immunity opinion bars official-act evidence. US Supreme Court/BITrump's lawyers now say there were at least four times that the judge improperly let Manhattan prosecutors show official-act evidence to the jury. Trump's hush-money conviction appeal will take years and could even lead back to the US Supreme Court.

Democratic Reps. Even so, four sources close to the Biden family said there is no active effort to shake up staffing right now. Hunter Biden's appearance in White House meetings this week was just one instance of what is expected to be the deeper Biden family involvement. From the view of some Biden aides, the family is seizing on an opportunity to try to settle old scores. President Joe Biden's family is attempting to become more involved over his campaign and White House affairs as their anger with his staff spills into public view. Hunter Biden's stepped-up involvement has confounded some White House staff members and revived a longtime sore spot.

CNN —If President Joe Biden is not the Democratic nominee coming out of the August party convention, it will have to be Vice President Kamala Harris. Gliding on robotic haulers, a line of Ferrari frames maneuvers through a gleaming new factory in Northern Italy. At each station, engineers in cherry red uniforms add a component — an engine block, a dashboard, a steering wheel — as they transform the bodies into hybrid vehicles. The transition to electric vehicles, which was supposed to quickly usher in an era of climate-friendly transport, has instead been squeezed by costly investments and slowing global demand. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon on Saturday granted former President Donald Trump's request for further briefing on the issue of presidential immunity in the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case and delayed certain deadlines. Smith's brief is now due on July 18, and a reply from Trump's team is due on July 21. There is no trial date in sight in the classified documents case. The latest development comes after Trump's attorneys on Friday asked Cannon to pause court proceedings and consider how the Supreme Court's ruling affects the case. Trump's team in February had also filed a motion to dismiss the indictment on immunity grounds.

But, if NASCAR is known for anything, it’s the loud V8 internal combustion engines that power the race car. That’s why NASCAR wants to make it very clear that gasoline-burning race cars are in no immediate danger of extinction. ABB is also heavily involved in Formula E, the electric racing series affiliated with Formula 1. With many changes over the years, modern NASCAR race cars bear little resemblance to the Toyotas and Chevrolets that typical Americans own. This time, designers wanted to maintain that resemblance between the race car and the vehicles fans drive, which are, increasingly, SUVs.

That’s her keeping close to Biden — but it’s also Biden keeping her close. The latest effort by the White House to quell the controversy is already disintegrating. His reasoning frustrated several governors who’d come to the White House to seek reassurance about Biden’s condition, sources said. “I’m not going anywhere,” Biden told military families gathered to watch July Fourth fireworks at the White House. And on Thursday, the presumptive GOP nominee offered to debate Biden one-on-one with without moderators. The increasingly unpromising state of the Biden campaign has many Democrats worried — one reason the ABC News interview and a scheduled press conference at the NATO summit in Washington next week will be so crucial.
