It's important to choose your words carefully and use assertive language, say authors and communication experts Kathy and Ross Petras. "The key is to be assertive without being overly aggressive," the Petrases wrote for CNBC Make It last year. No, if you have something important to say, then say it." If you're nervous or insecure during a meeting or conversation, changing a few words won't change the way you feel. 'I don't know'"I don't know" is a common filler phrase, or crutch word, to fill space until people can complete their thoughts.

That’s at least what scientists expect to take place in swaths of Mexico, Canada and the United States during April 8’s total solar eclipse. They discovered that cumulus clouds dissipate during eclipses because of the relationship between solar radiation and the formation processes of the clouds. Shallow cumulus clouds, in particular, serve a critical function. But what exactly shallow cumulus clouds’ role is when it comes to the rapidly warming climate remains a long-standing subject of uncertainty in the scientific community. De Roode hopes those across North America gearing up for the next solar eclipse remember to keep an eye out for any vanishing low-lying cumulus clouds.

A significant chunk of that money was strategic, in that it came from tech companies rather than venture capitalists or other institutions. The company has refocused much of its product development on generative AI, and its newly rebranded Gemini model, adding features into search, documents, maps and elsewhere. Alphabet and Nvidia are also investors in Runway ML, a generative AI company known for its video-editing and visual effects tools. Microsoft has invested in many of the techniques underpinning generative AI through its Microsoft Research division. Apple researchers recently published details of their work on MM1, a family of small AI models that can take both text and visual input.

Notre-Dame Cathedral sat in the pre-dawn chill like a spaceship docked in the heart of Paris, its exoskeleton of scaffolding lit by bright lights. Pink clouds appeared to the east as machinery hummed to life and workers started clambering around. A crane hoisted them onto the nave of the cathedral, which was devastated by fire in 2019. Mr. Silver — a 41-year-old American-Canadian carpenter — is something of an unlikely candidate to work on the restoration of an 860-year-old Gothic monument and Catholic landmark in France. It also has given them a way to show the world that their manual tools and techniques have stood the test of time.

OpenAI's "Voice Engine" tool, which the company says it first developed in late 2022, uses a 15-second audio clip of a real person's voice to create an eerily realistic, human-sounding replica of that voice. AdvertisementOpenAI stressed that its partner organizations must obey strict policies to use Voice Engine, like getting consent from every individual being impersonated and informing listeners that the voice is AI-generated. "We are taking a cautious and informed approach to a broader release due to the potential for synthetic voice misuse," the company wrote. "We hope to start a dialogue on the responsible deployment of synthetic voices, and how society can adapt to these new capabilities." For example, OpenAI suggested establishing a "no-go voice list" to prevent the nonconsensual replication of prominent voices, like politicians or celebrities.

Remote jobs are getting harder to come by. As of December 2023, remote jobs made up less than 10% of postings advertised on LinkedIn, down from a high of 20.6% in March 2022 — even though close to half of jobseekers prefer remote roles. To examine where remote hiring is happening the most for high-paying jobs, FlexJobs identified the top 10 occupations with the highest number of remote job openings on their site between January and March 2024 that pay more than $100,000. The top industries offering ample remote work opportunities with six-figure salaries include tech, marketing and project management, per FlexJobs data provided to CNBC Make It. With that in mind, here are some in-demand, high-paying remote jobs that can earn you a salary of $100,000 or more, according to data from FlexJobs and Payscale:1.

Another key component was DNA from a living descendant of Samuel Washington. Samuel Washington, George Washington's younger brother, was buried in an unmarked grave at the cemetery at his Harewood estate (an interior view is pictured above) near Charles Town, West Virginia. Fortunately for the authors of the new study, “DNA analysis has come a long way since the early 2000s,” Cavagnino said. Further details came from 95,000 SNPs, an enormous volume of data targeting autosomal DNA (DNA that isn’t attached to sex chromosomes). “The search for Samuel Washington’s grave is no longer underway,” Marshall said.

CNN —Ancient DNA recovered from the remains of a sixth century Chinese emperor who ruled during the country’s dark ages has shed some light on what the leader may have looked like. Emperor Wu ruled China as part of the Northern Zhou dynasty from 560 to 580 and is credited with unifying the northern part of ancient China during a particularly chaotic period. “Our analysis shows Emperor Wu had typical East or Northeast Asian facial characteristics.”The authors said they hoped ancient DNA might shed light on Wu’s cause of death. The genetic analysis showed that Emperor Wu intermarried with ethnically Han Chinese, China’s dominant ethnic group today. “It’s interesting to see the genetic study, but none of the findings of this genetic study are surprising at all,” Miller said.

Given the fast-changing world of business, hiring managers "want to look for growth mindset," says Aneesh Raman, a vice president and workforce expert at LinkedIn. Salaries for fully in-office roles are climbing in the United States. As of March 2024, hybrid roles pay $59,992 on average, in 2023, that number was $54,034, ZipRecruiter reports. Remote jobs now pay $75,327, but in 2023, they paid an average $69,107. Given how competitive the job market has been in recent months — especially for remote roles — Bui says it's a "fair trade-off." It's too soon to tell if higher salaries will be enough to convince people to choose an in-office job over a remote offer.

Rome CNN —Archaeologists excavating the site of Pompeii have uncovered an ancient building site, revealing Roman construction techniques used by builders at the time, according to the Italian Ministry of Culture. The ancient Roman city of Pompeii was home to up to 20,000 people before it was destroyed in the 79 AD eruption, which was visible from more than 40 kilometers (25 miles) away. Archaeologists have found what would have been an active construction site - perhaps more accurately described as a home renovation, according to Massimo Osanna, the general director of the site, in a press statement released Monday. Archaeologists say the site reveals the secrets as to how Roman structures have proven to be so durable.
