Politico said Monday that its top U.S. editor was stepping down and would be replaced by one of the publication’s co-founders, John Harris, who will also take on additional responsibilities for Politico’s international editions. Matt Kaminski, who joined Politico nearly a decade ago from The Wall Street Journal, will conclude his tenure as editor in chief at the end of August, Goli Sheikholeslami, Politico’s chief executive, said in an email to the staff Monday. London CNN —A pod of more than 50 pilot whales has died after a mass stranding on a northwestern Scottish island, according to a marine charity on the ground. Pilot whales are sociable animals, so if one becomes stranded, experts believe others from the pod will follow and also become stranded. Known to be gregarious, pilot whales have “extremely strong social and emotional bonds with one another,” Jarvis told CNN. In the UK, the largest stranding of pilot whales was in Scotland in 2011, when 77 were found stuck on the country’s northerly shores, according to Jarvis. Tasmania’s largest stranding was in 2020, when more than 450 pilot whales were found.

A nonprofit that aims to maintain local ownership for newspapers will buy 22 papers in Maine, including The Portland Press Herald and The Sun Journal of Lewiston. The National Trust for Local News, a nonprofit that was started in 2021, will buy the papers from Masthead Maine, a private company that owns most of the independent media outlets in the state, including five of its six daily papers. Masthead Maine’s owner, Reade Brower, had signaled this year that he was exploring a sale. Police found a fifth victim in a southwest Philadelphia shooting, hours after a heavily armed gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on Monday evening, the police said. The fifth victim was found in a house near the shootings; there were casings that matched the other shootings, according to a police spokesperson. The dead were all men between the ages of 20 and 59, the police said. Two children, aged 2 and 13, were also hospitalized and were stable, they said. A male suspect was taken into custody by the police just before 8:40 p.m., the authorities said, adding that they had recovered a semiautomatic rifle, a handgun and another gun in the alleyway behind the 1600 block of South Frazier Street.

The oversight board for Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms on Thursday said Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen should be suspended from the social media site for six months for posting a video violating rules against violent threats. The board, which is funded by Meta but operates independently, said the company had been wrong not to remove the video after it was published in January. Meta, in a written statement, agreed to take down the video but said it would respond to the board’s recommendation to suspend Hun Sen after a review. Any suspension would silence the prime minister’s Facebook page less than a month before an election in Cambodia. Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said Hun Sen had finally been called out for inciting violence.
