Yet some of the very issues Biden’s campaign believe will define next year’s contest – including abortion rights and the economy – are being weighed both directly and indirectly. In Virginia, where all 140 seats in the General Assembly are on the ballot, Biden’s team is watching closely to see how successful Republican Gov. In Ohio, voters will decide on an amendment that would enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution. Biden’s team is watching both closely to see how much abortion is still a motivating message heading into 2024. Vice President Kamala Harris has been a key spokesperson for the Biden White House on the issue of abortion rights.

Before there can be any kind of stable coexistence of people in Israel and Palestine, there will have to be a stable coexistence of narratives. And that’s what we’ll be attempting this week on the show: to look at both the present and the past through Israeli and Palestinian perspectives. Why the U.S. won't change physical cash
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Mark Licea | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
The Federal Reserve will spend $931.4 million to print bills in 2023 — but there's a problem with U.S. cash. Physical currency has been updated around the world but not in the U.S., and while an increasing number of Americans are ditching cash for electronic payments, experts say cash isn't going away. In 2017, the $100 bill surpassed the $1 bill as the most popular currency denomination. Some speculate that the rise in $100 bills in circulation may be to avoid taxes or for illegal activity. … In the 1960s, the half dollar lost its place because it wasn't included in the use of parking meters," said Mudd.

India's export ban on rice is reverberating through global rice markets, threatening food security if developing nations cannot afford or access rice. India's rice exports make up 40% of the market, so any export bans quickly influence global prices. U.S. rice farmers face the same volatile rice prices. "Our farmers, they'll go up against any rice farmer," Michael Klein, vice president of communications and domestic promotion at USA Rice, told CNBC. When U.S. rice farms struggled to stay profitable as global rice prices mismatched with rising input costs, Congress passed $250 million in supplemental funding.

Before the endorsement, Mr. Trump repeatedly criticized Ms. Reynolds, who had joined Mr. DeSantis at campaign events around Iowa, for her perceived disloyalty. Mr. Trump, meanwhile, spent Monday testifying in a civil fraud trial that threatens his business empire in New York. In Iowa, Mr. DeSantis is in need of a jolt. “She’s the reason we’re red,” said Gloria Mazza, the chairwoman of the Republican Party of Polk County, which includes Des Moines. Leaders of Iowa’s evangelical community, an important voting bloc, suggested Ms. Reynolds’s endorsement was a major coup for the DeSantis campaign.

Many states subsidize golf courses with low property taxes, so non-golfers are footing the bill. David Madison/Getty ImagesUrban golf courses also cost taxpayers — even those who don't play — a lot of money. Proponents of retrofitting courses note that reducing the number of golf courses would help boost revenue for courses that do survive. "But then on the flip side, we have these public golf courses that are just these almost vacuous spaces that are quite underutilized." He noted that projects that just involve turning golf courses into parks are often most palatable to neighbors.

On Tuesday afternoon at a courthouse in Kansas City, Missouri, the collective nightmare of the real-estate industry became reality. For decades, the basic structure of how real-estate agents get paid when they help someone buy or sell their home has remained roughly the same. Here's how it works: When you list your home for sale on an MLS, you're required to offer a commission to the buyer's agent. The good buyer's agents who can prove their value will be fine, Brobeck predicted. The wild thing is, the decision could be just the beginning of tumult for the real-estate industry.

For Israel, a War Unlike Any Other
  + stars: | 2023-11-03 | by ( Yossi Klein Halevi | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The Israeli psyche resembles an archaeological site of layers of unresolved traumas, ordinary life interrupted by history. This is the first war I’ve experienced that seems existential. Not in an immediate sense: Israel will not disappear tomorrow if it fails to meet its stated goal of destroying Hamas. But Israelis intuitively understand that if this round of fighting ends with one more stalemate, then our military deterrence—shattered by the mass but intimate butchery of Oct. 7—could be irretrievable. Without credible deterrence, we have “nothing to look for,” as Israeli slang puts it, in the Middle East.

Klein, who didn't testify at his trial, declined to address the court before U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden sentenced him to five years and 10 months in prison. Prosecutors said Klein’s participation in the riot was likely motivated by a desire to keep his job as a presidential appointee. Prosecutors had recommended a 10-year prison sentence for Klein, an Alexandria, Virginia, resident who was 42 years old at the time of the riot. Klein and Cappuccio separately attended Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 before marching to the Capitol. Approximately 700 of them have been sentenced, with roughly two-thirds receiving terms of imprisonment ranging from three days to 22 years.

CNN —A former appointee of Donald Trump was sentenced Friday to 70 months in prison for his violent role on January 6, 2021. Federico Klein, a former State Department appointee, was found guilty following a bench trial before Judge Trevor McFadden this summer of multiple counts, including assaulting multiple police officers that day. “Your actions on January 6 were shocking and egregious,” McFadden, also a Trump appointee, said during Friday’s sentencing. Aquilino Gonell told the court that Klein had attacked him multiple times with a police riot shield. Klein’s actions on January 6, Woodward said, were “not a betrayal” of his service in the military and the State Department, but was part of attending “a protest turned wrong.”

A former U.S. Marine who served in the Trump administration as a low-level State Department aide was sentenced on Friday to nearly six years in prison for his role in the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The former aide, Federico G. Klein, of Falls Church, Va., was a State Department employee when he used a stolen riot shield to repeatedly assault officers during several violent clashes in a tunnel below the Capitol, prosecutors said. He was arrested in March 2021 and indicted later that year. After a non-jury trial in July, Mr. Klein was convicted of eight felony charges, including six counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers; obstruction of an official proceeding; and civil disorder, as well as several misdemeanors, prosecutors said. He did not testify at his trial, and declined to address the court before Judge Trevor N. McFadden of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia sentenced him to 70 months in prison and 24 months of supervised release, The Associated Press reported.

The nagging feeling which keeps travelers tethered to their devices has been coined the fear of switching off, or FOSO. It's loosely similar to the fear of missing out (FOMO), commonly denoted as the worries of not being included in exciting experiences or activities that others are a part of. FOSO can be seen as an extension of FOMO, said Handcock. "The fear of disconnecting from devices partially stems from a fear of missing out on work and home updates," he elaborated. Gideon Mendel | Corbis Historical | Getty ImagesAccording to the survey by Priority Pass, FOSO is more prevalent among younger travelers.

CNN —President Joe Biden is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House said, sharing an agreement in principle has been reached on a meeting later this month in San Francisco. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stressed that the White House believes the best way to manage competition is through “intense diplomacy,” and said, “It’s going to be a constructive meeting. The high-stakes meeting comes as the White House is navigating major wars in Ukraine and Israel, and amid growing competition with China as the US has worked to reestablish regular communication with Beijing following months of tension. Biden has frequently pressed the importance of face-to-face interactions with world leaders as he seeks to foster improved relations. Biden and Xi previously met face-to-face in November 2022 for a three-hour talk in Bali, Indonesia, at a G20 Summit, marking a step toward improving a souring –- but critical –- bilateral relationship.

“Two things are true: Israel must do something, and what it’s doing now is indefensible.” So writes Zack Beauchamp, a senior correspondent at Vox. Almost a month has passed since Hamas fighters slaughtered over 1,400 people in Israel and the state mounted its furious response. If Israel continues down this road, the cost in Palestinian lives, and in support for Israel, will be immense. Beauchamp, who has covered Israel extensively in recent years, set out to answer that question. I found his piece “What Israel Should Do Now” one of the best I’ve read since Oct. 7.

Neither the union nor GM would confirm the tentative deal. Most recently that happened at Mack Trucks, where nearly 4,000 UAW members went on strike on October 8 after voting no on their own tentative agreement. There are a total of more than 18,000 UAW members at GM now on strike, though they could be returning to work within days. The strike had a total of nearly 50,000 UAW members on strike at one point or another, although not all at the same time. During the UAW strike, a coalition of unions at Kaiser Permanente had 75,000 workers walk out in the largest US health care strike in history.

As Israel’s assault on Gaza unfolds, global pressure is mounting for a pause in the fighting, including Monday at the United Nations. Instead, they describe occasionally difficult behind-the-scenes conversations about the importance of humanitarian aid and protecting civilian lives. “We have conversations, like friends do, on the hard questions … on issues associated with humanitarian aid,” US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Sunday on CBS. Saudi Arabia has cautioned against a broad-scale Israeli invasion of Gaza, in part due to the potential of a spiraling regional war. The blackout – which left civilians, aid groups and journalists without any means of communicating with the outside world – came amid heavy Israeli bombardment of the enclave.

Opinion | The Conflicted Legacy of Mitt Romney
  + stars: | 2023-10-27 | by ( The Ezra Klein Show | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
After factional infighting dominated the G.O.P.’s struggle to elect a House speaker, it feels weirdly quaint to revisit Mitt Romney’s career. He’s served as governor, U.S. senator and presidential nominee for a Republican Party now nearly unrecognizable from what it was when he started out. At the end of his time in public office, Romney has found a new clarity in his identity as the consummate institutionalist in an increasingly anti-constitutionalist party. In this resulting biography “Romney: A Reckoning,” Coppins pushes Romney to wrestle with his own role — even complicity — in what his party has become. In this conversation, guest host Carlos Lozada and Coppins examine Romney’s legacy at a time when it may seem increasingly out of place with the mainstream G.O.P.

Opinion | The Reactionary Futurism of Marc Andreessen
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Ezra Klein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
I think the Republican Party’s collapse into incoherence reflects the fact that much of the modern right is reactionary, not conservative. It’s a coalition obsessed with where we went wrong: the weakness, the political correctness, the liberalism, the trigger warnings, the smug elites. The Silicon Valley cohort Andreessen belongs to has added a bit to this formula. Rather, it’s the pairing of the reactionary’s sodden take on modern society with the futurist’s starry imagining of the bright tomorrow. So call it what it is: reactionary futurism.

On Tuesday morning, Jenna Ellis became the third Donald Trump-allied lawyer to plead guilty in Fulton County, Ga., to state criminal charges related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. The Ellis, Powell and Chesebro guilty pleas represent an advance for both the state election prosecution in Georgia and the federal election prosecution in Washington. At the same time, however, it’s far too soon to tell whether the prosecution has made real progress on Trump himself. The ultimate importance of the plea deals depends on the nature of the testimony from the lawyers, and we don’t yet know what they have said — or will say. To understand the potential significance of these plea agreements, it’s necessary to understand the importance of Trump’s legal team to Trump’s criminal defense.

Back then, Israel defeated the armies of three Arab states — Egypt, Syria and Jordan — in what became known as the Six-Day War. Today, if you look closely, you’ll see that Israel is now fighting the Six-Front War. But one thing is crystal clear to me: Israel cannot win this six-front war alone. This is the first Israeli government ever to make annexation of the West Bank a stated objective in its coalition agreement. Be advised: If Israel does invade Gaza, corporations everywhere will be facing competing demands from employees to denounce Israel or Hamas.

But after years of trying, the basic structure of buying and selling a home remains pretty much the same. Even if you accept a bit of intricacy, real estate remains a stodgy industry — and regulation is at the core of that resistance to change. Despite the best efforts of would-be disruptors to cut out this middleman, 88% of buyers this year enlisted a real-estate agent, a Zillow survey found. Short of a tech-enabled homebuying nirvana, there are some other changes that could make the process easier for consumers. Saul Klein, an early internet evangelist in the real-estate industry, told me he sees an approaching "paradigm shift."
