A good musician’s relationship with the past is tricky. You want to move forward without entirely forsaking what you’ve already done. You don’t want it defining you when so much future defining lies ahead. The Russian officials took the proposal back to Moscow. It was a remarkably swift conclusion to years of painstaking negotiations between the US and more than half a dozen countries. Key to the deal was President Biden’s ability to persuade German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to release Krasikov, the Russian prisoner most keenly sought by Putin. Officials worked quietly throughout this year to get the German government to agree to release Krasikov — including entreaties from both Biden and Harris. President Biden sent a letter to Scholz in April, and the Germans at last agreed to release Krasikov in early June.

Now that she has mastered it, the uneven bars routine that the gymnast Kaylia Nemour has prepared for the Paris Olympics is a sight to behold: a fluid yet treacherous 30 seconds, so tightly woven with difficulty that it has made her a medal favorite in the event. When Nemour performed it in competition last month, it produced the highest score recorded on the bars since the Tokyo Olympics. But while she may wow fans in her home country at these Games, she won’t be doing it under the French flag. Instead, Nemour, 17, is competing for Algeria, the result of a nationality switch last year that followed a protracted dispute with the French gymnastics federation — one that has seen the host nation lose out on perhaps its best chance for a medal on one of the most high-profile stages of the Games. The conflict that drove a wedge between Nemour and the French federation began with a power struggle over training sites ahead of the Games but has since devolved into accusations of overtraining, caustic exchanges and an 18-month administrative inquiry that concluded last December that the federation was “hounding” Nemour’s home gym in Avoine, a village in western France.

South Sudan’s men’s basketball team defeated Puerto Rico 90-79 in Paris on Sunday in its first ever appearance at the Games, but the result meant more than just picking up two points in Group C. For South Sudan Basketball Federation President Luol Deng, it was the culmination of everything that he and the team had worked so hard to achieve. “When the national anthem was sung, you know, it just gave me goosebumps, and I realized that this was bigger than basketball,” Deng told CNN Sport’s Amanda Davies. He was born in Wau, in what is now South Sudan, before the country’s independence. South Sudan officially gained independence from Sudan in 2011 following a referendum, making it the world’s newest widely-recognized state. South Sudan players celebrate after defeating Puerto Rico.
