Netanyahu said the attack from Gaza by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which killed 1,400 people in Israel, was aimed at derailing attempts to establish a wider peace in the region. At least nine British nationals have been killed and seven are still missing since the attack on Israel, Sunak's spokesperson said. In Israel, Sunak met the families of two of the missing, who are believed to have been taken hostage and held in Gaza. The last British prime minister to visit Israel and the occupied West Bank was David Cameron in 2014.

President Biden arrived in Israel in a show of solidarity for the country after the assault by Hamas, part of an effort that U.S. officials hope will deter other regional actors from joining the conflict. Biden’s trip was cut short even before he arrived in Tel Aviv at around 10:50 a.m. local time, since a deadly explosion at a hospital in Gaza sparked protests in Amman, Jordan, where the U.S. president was set to meet Arab leaders at a summit that was subsequently called off after Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas pulled out over the hospital blast.
