Snap shares rose nearly 12% on Monday following reports of an internal CEO memo indicating that the social messaging company could post better-than-expected results for 2024. Snap confirmed the numbers cited in the memo with CNBC but characterized them as "stretch, internal goals only." "I know this was an internal memo, but management must have known it was going to leak." Snap shares sank more than 17% in July after it gave guidance for its current quarter that missed analysts' expectations. Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the nature of the numbers cited in the memo — they were goals, not projections.

Apple has introduced a new "screen distance" feature in its iOS 17 to promote healthier screen use. The feature tells users when they're holding their device too close to their face. So when Apple announced a new "screen distance" feature for iPhones last month, I was immediately intrigued. It's supposed to help combat eye strain and promote healthier viewing habits, alerting you when you're holding your device too close to your face. Click on "Screen Distance" and turn the feature on.

New York CNN —Many schools, psychologists and safety groups are urging parents to disable their children’s social media apps over mounting concerns that Hamas plans to disseminate graphic videos of hostages captured in the Israel-Gaza war. Following the attacks on Israel last weekend, much of the terror has played out on social media. Guardians can also set up guardrails directly within social media apps. YouTube: On YouTube, the Family Link tool allows parents to set up supervised accounts for their children, screen time limits or block certain content. At the same time,YouTube Kids also provides a safer space for kids, and parents who decide their kids are ready to see more content on YouTube can create a supervised account.

The updates include the addition of memory storage to its developer tools for using AI models. The new features are expected to be rolled out at OpenAI’s first-ever developer conference in San Francisco on November 6, sources said. Keeping developers happy has been a major focus for OpenAI, these sources told Reuters. Earlier this year, the company rushed to release ChatGPT plugins, add-on tools that allow developers to create applications within ChatGPT. Earlier this year, Altman admitted to a group of developers in London that plugins have not gained market traction.

New York CNN —Google is looking to make passwords obsolete by prompting users to create passkeys to unlock accounts and devices with a fingerprint, face scan or pin number. Google said Tuesday that passcodes are easier to remember, quicker to use and offer more security. The company unveiled support for passkeys in May but announced in a blog post that the technology will now become the go-to option during password creation. “[W]e’ll continue encouraging the industry to make the pivot to passkeys — making passwords a rarity, and eventually obsolete,” Google wrote. Google will continue to support traditional passwords, and users can dodge passkeys altogether by disabling their account’s “skip password when possible” option.

A new Apple iOS 17 feature gives you the option to leave a video message if your FaceTime goes unanswered. As long as you have an iPhone from 2018 or later, and you update your phone's software, you can record a video message. Keep in mind this only works if your recipient also has iOS 17. It can be a fun way to leave a video for someone if they miss your FaceTime call, and it works just like you might expect to leave a voicemail. It's easy to do, so I'll show you how.

The British company gets most of its revenue from the smartphone market, in which it has a 99% share across Google's Android and Apple's iOS devices. Arm shares last closed at $54.08, compared with the IPO price of $51. Such growth would benefit SoftBank, which told investors ahead of the Arm IPO that it plans to remain the majority owner in the company it considers its crown jewel. But some brokerages, including HSBC, urged caution, saying Arm's shares could remain range-bound as uncertainty over a smartphone market recovery pressures earnings. At least 17 brokerages started covering Arm, with an average rating of "buy" and a median price target of $63.50.

Apple released a fix for an issue that caused the new iPhone 15 to "run warmer than expected." Apple said the problem was a software issue and not related to the Pro's titanium frame. AdvertisementAdvertisementApple released a software update to fix a bug that caused the new iPhone 15 pro to overheat after some users complained the phone was getting too hot to handle. The iPhone 15 has proved popular since going on sale last month, with strong sales in China and queues at some Apple stores around the world. That's despite some Apple fans being dissatisfied with the fairly incremental changes from previous models, with some users branding the iPhone 15 "boring" and "underwhelming" on social media.

BRUSSELS, Oct 4 (Reuters) - European Union antitrust regulators have commissioned a study into mobile ecosystems to help them counter any pushback from Apple (AAPL.O) and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google in complying with new tech rules. They will also have to let users install apps from outside their app stores, a move which Apple said would make phones the target of malware or hijacking by cybercriminals. A tender for the study, worth 300,000 euros ($315,200), will run until Oct. 17, according to an announcement on the European Commission website. "The aim of the study is to support the supervision and enforcement of the DMA vis-a-vis the gatekeepers," the tender document said. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 4 (Reuters) - Google on Wednesday announced plans to add generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to its virtual assistant, and a company executive told Reuters the AI would allow the assistant to do things like help people plan a trip or catch up on emails and then ask follow-up questions. The Alphabet (GOOGL.O) subsidiary said during its hardware event in New York that it plans to add generative AI features from its Bard chatbot into Google's version of a virtual assistant, that aims to provide personalized help with reasoning and generative capabilities on mobile devices. "(A) whole task is done through a couple of simple questions that you're asking your assistant, which is, we think, a very, very powerful concept," Sissie Hsiao vice president, Google assistant and Bard said in an interview with Reuters. Google and other tech companies have been racing to build some form of generative AI into new or existing products. It will not include revenue generating features, Hsiao said, because Google is still in the "learning phase" with generative AI.

Trump gets kicked off Forbes 400 list of richest Americans

New York CNN Business —As Donald Trump scrambles to defend his business empire in court, the former president has suffered another blow: dropping off The Forbes 400 list of the richest Americans. Unlike the steady or growing fortunes of Forbes 400 leaders Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Larry Ellison, Trump’s net worth took a double-digit hit. Trump launched Truth Social in February 2022, envisioning it as a credible threat to Facebook and Twitter. Trump was previously booted from The Forbes 400 in 2021 and in 1990 when he faced severe financial stress. As Forbes notes, Trump “lied” to the magazine in a successful effort to make the Forbes 400.

Russia's federal anti-monopoly service (FAS) fined Apple in January over what it said was the U.S. company's abuse of its dominant market position. In a statement, the regulator said it had previously found that Apple forced Russian developers to use Apple's payment services with the iOS App Store, in violation of Russia's competition rules. The FAS's decision entered legal force in May after it was approved by a Moscow court, RIA reported.

The proposal, which would cost users around $14 a month on mobile devices and as much as $17 on a desktop, is Meta's attempt to navigate strict privacy rules in the European Union. Meta has spoken with digital-competition regulators in Brussels, privacy regulators in Ireland and other EU privacy regulators about its proposal, according to the report. It is not clear whether regulators believe Meta's proposal is a sufficient workaround, according to the report, and they may ask the company to propose a cheaper offering. Since the privacy rules do not apply to the U.S., it is unlikely that Meta would introduce SNA there. But in February, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a paid verification subscription service called Meta Verified.

Nadella testified on Monday as part of the US government’s sweeping antitrust trial against Google, now into its 14th day. His testimony reflected the frustrations of a long-running rivalry between Microsoft and Google whose tensions have permeated the weeks-long trial. Central to Google’s strategy has been its agreements with companies such as Apple that have made Google the default search engine for millions of internet users. “You get up in the morning, you brush your teeth, you search on Google,” Nadella said. Google’s dominance in search is reinforced when websites and publishers optimize for Google’s search algorithm and not Bing’s, when advertisers flock to Google and when users stick to what’s familiar, Nadella argued.
