NASA's Space Launch System rocket is scheduled to launch an uncrewed mission to the moon early Wednesday. When it launches, the SLS rocket should deliver the Orion spaceship on a trajectory to circle the moon and return to Earth. Eventually, NASA plans to launch astronauts from the moon to Mars. The Orion spaceship parachutes to a splash down during a test, on December 5, 2014. If the uncrewed Orion spaceship makes it around the moon and back without a hitch, the next SLS mission will carry astronauts on the same roundabout.
The company has raised almost $50 million in funding and is backed by investor Peter Thiel. Tech CEOs all made the same dumb mistake, and it's cost thousands of jobs. In his first remarks to Twitter employees, Musk said that the service's success is far from guaranteed and that bankruptcy is an option. Meta insiders say they have little to no visibility into who, exactly, got let go in the culling of 11,000 jobs. Shopping on social media is the wave of the future; just ask Elon Musk. What to know about Mastodon, the Twitter alternative
  + stars: | 2022-11-08 | by ( Rachel Metz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
I am one of these Mastodon newcomers, trying it out of curiosity and because Twitter has felt increasingly toxic over time. Davide Bonaldo/SOPA Images/ShutterstockBut while it can be exciting to seek out a new social network, it can be tricky, too. Mastodon and Twitter have some similarities, yet they’re quite different — both in how they work and how they’re operated. I have mostly taken the more manual route by searching on Twitter for the word “Mastodon” to pull up people I follow who have added Mastodon usernames to their Twitter profile names. There also isn’t a Mastodon equivalent to Twitter’s quote-tweet feature, where you can repost another user’s post and append your own thoughts to it.
"It's definitely been not the most exciting and robust year," said one TV agent at a major agency. Around 70 people at HBO and HBO Max have been let go this year, and their comedy development teams have merged. While WBD doesn't break out streamer-specific figures, it said on Thursday's earnings call that HBO Max, HBO, and Discovery+ have a combined 94.9 million subscribers, ensuring that any show on HBO Max has the chance to get a lot of eyeballs. They'll also take smaller swings in the genre department, do things at a lower budget," said the second TV agent. Echoed the first TV agent: "You pitch and sell to them if no one else wants it."
LONDON — Another U.S. citizen has died fighting in Ukraine, two people with knowledge of his death told NBC News on Monday, bringing the number of Americans killed in Russia’s war to at least six. Griffin had been taking part in Ukraine’s counteroffensive on the eastern front, according to the International Legion. The next month, 52-year-old Stephen Zabielski of Hernando, Florida, was killed fighting in the village of Dorozhniank. And in July, the State Department confirmed that two more Americans had been killed in eastern Ukraine. Last week, the body of a fifth American killed in Ukraine, 24-year-old Joshua Jones, was returned by Russia to Ukrainian custody.

And the stock market isn't the only aspect of the economy that's hurting soon-to-be retirees. Saving for retirement 101Most people have three primary sources of income in retirement: personal retirement accounts (401(k)s and IRAs), pensions and Social Security. In retirement, the individual would withdraw no more than 4% of their retirement portfolio annually, while adjusting for inflation. If you've been maintaining a diversified retirement portfolio with 60% allocated towards stocks and 40% towards bonds, you've probably noticed both asset classes taking big hits. But of course, if the market hasn't bottomed yet, you're taking a risk.

The recently authorized booster vaccine protects against the original SARS-CoV-2 virus and the more recent omicron variants, BA.4 and BA.5. The Food and Drug Administration said two studies this week showing that the new omicron boosters weren't that much better than the old shots were too small to come to any real conclusions. The antibody responses were slightly higher with the omicron boosters, though the studies concluded the difference wasn't significant. The studies are of public interest because there's very limited human data on how the omicron BA.5 boosters perform right now. The FDA also looked at data directly on the BA.5 shots that came from animal studies.

Opinion | Frustrated With Polling? Pollsters Are, Too
  + stars: | 2022-10-24 | by ( Quoctrung Bui | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +18 min
But what’s really troubling pollsters going into this election is that it’s unclear how much more error these problems will add during this cycle. Just because you put the right ingredients in a bowl, doesn’t mean you’re going to end up with a cake. I think a lot of that has been swept under the rug because the move to online polling seems so inexorable. Pollsters don’t know what people are seeing, hearing and reading. I know at FiveThirtyEight you can search by A-rated or B-rated, but I don’t know how they’re coming up with these ratings.
Payments are still set to resume in January 2023 after being on pause for over two years during the pandemic. When announcing the debt relief, Biden said the extension of the payment pause through December 2022 would be "final," while also noting that the application to apply for relief would go live in early October. While the Education Department recommends borrowers submit their applications by mid-November so the relief can hit their accounts before payments resume, it remains to be seen how effectively student-loan companies will implement the relief. "Another concern is with the loan servicers – we must ensure that they aren't engaging in deceptive or illegal behavior, and holding them fully accountable if they do," she added. And income-driven repayment plans, which are intended to give borrowers affordable monthly payments with the promise of loan forgiveness after at least 20 years, had the same issue — recent reports found loan companies had failed to track payments borrowers had made.

Over half of Gen Z and millennials could enter retirement with insufficient savings, says a Boston University economist. As of 2017, roughly half of all retirement age Americans had no personal retirement savings, per a January Census Bureau report. While the expectation that young Americans will live longer than the generations before them is a positive development, this also raises the total cost of retirement. "The retirement age will rise and it's been rising," he said, pointing to BLS projections of older workers' labor force participation. To prepare for retirement, Kotlikoff says Gen Zers should be saving 15% of what they earn after taxes, although he adds that that "may well be on the low side."
Mark Zuckerberg is making the same mistakes that plagued former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. Zuckerberg, too, is making a big bet on the metaverse, one better suited for the venture capital world. As Meta shifts to become "a metaverse company" amid stalling user growth and slowing ad sales, stories are emerging about the growing pains that have arrived alongside the changes. Zuckerberg's metaverse play isn't unusual in the tech world, it's just not one we've often seen pay off outside the world of venture capital. No one wants to run out of money before they die. That makes it difficult to figure out how much you can take every year from your portfolio and not outlive your money. But there are various rules of thumb to help you gauge a sustainable withdrawal rate. Rules of thumb for sustainable withdrawal ratesOne rule is a “percent of portfolio” withdrawal strategy. A more sustainable withdrawal rate might be 3.3%, according to Morningstar, or between 2.8% and 3.3% according to Vanguard.

CNN —James Earl Jones, who for decades has provided Darth Vader’s iconic, menacing voice, will not record new lines for new “Star Wars” projects. Instead, Jones’ voice will live on artificially through an AI program that can recreate his voice, so Vader can deliver new lines of dialogue and maintain the commanding bass sound that made him a widely feared villain, Vanity Fair reported. Jones, 91, last recorded a Vader voice cameo for the 2019 sequel “The Rise of Skywalker,” sound editor Matthew Wood told Vanity Fair. “So how do we move forward?”James Earl Jones' signature bass has helped make Darth Vader an iconic villain. Jones, an EGOT-winning actor, has voiced Vader since 1977’s “A New Hope,” though his role was uncredited for that project.
