Lyme disease: A doctor explains what it is

CNN —As model Bella Hadid opens up about Lyme disease and other health issues, her ordeal brings up many questions. Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of a particular tick, the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes pacificus). CNN: Is there a blood test one could take to see whether they have Lyme disease? False positives can also occur, with some other tickborne diseases and autoimmune illnesses triggering a positive result in the absence of Lyme disease. Wen: Without a vaccine, the best way to prevent Lyme disease is to prevent tick bites.

By her early 30s she had earned a law degree from Harvard, an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a PEN/Hemingway Award for her lauded debut novel, “The Grass Dancer.” Then Mona Susan Power’s world went dark. But depression, anxiety, and what she would later learn to identify as complex P.T.S.D. led her to withdraw almost completely from a life she felt increasingly ill-equipped to handle in the wake of “The Grass Dancer’s” success. If you’re not prepared for it, if you don’t really believe that you deserve it … the whole impostor syndrome thing, it just got worse.

Bitty and Beau's Coffee isn't your average coffee shop. It's a "human rights movement" in disguise, say co-founders Amy and Ben Wright. The husband-and-wife duo left their careers in education and finance — in 2016 and 2020, respectively — to build Bitty and Beau's, a chain of coffee shops run almost entirely by people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Today, Bitty and Beau's has 19 locations and more than 400 employees across 11 states, according to its website. WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - Top U.S. Senate Republican Mitch McConnell plans to remain in his leadership post through the 2024 elections, a spokesperson said on Friday, two days after the minority leader froze up for about 21 seconds while speaking to reporters. "He plans to serve his full term in the job they (Republican senators) overwhelmingly elected him to do," the spokesperson said. The top four Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress, including McConnell, typically play a crucial role in this effort as they try to avert partial government shutdowns for a lack of funds. McConnell served as Senate majority leader from 2015 to 2021 and as Senate minority leader since then. Democrats, including three independents who vote with them, currently hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, when all senators are present.

New York CNN —A woman is suing the billionaire investor Leon Black, accusing him of raping her at Jeffrey Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse when she was 16 years old. The lawsuit describes in gruesome detail the woman’s account of a sexual assault that left her bleeding and sobbing. A spokesman for Black, Whit Clay, echoed Estrich’s denial, saying the law firm “has an agenda” and that its credibility has been impugned by the dismissal of the previous suit. An internal Apollo investigation that documented his $158 million payment to Epstein found no wrongdoing. The latest suit is the third to publicly accuse Black of rape.

In the past six years, Riley Sager has published seven novels — all of them best sellers except his first, “Final Girls,” which won a 2018 International Thriller Writers Award. The Pennsylvania native reliably produces one book a year on a strict schedule that sounded remarkably uncomplicated (if dizzying) when he described it in a phone interview. “I usually start on Jan. 2 and keep writing until June,” Sager said. Thankfully for those of us who see the similarities between writing and having a cavity filled, Sager admitted that his seventh book did not go according to plan. “I always have some impostor syndrome going on at all times, but in the case of ‘The Only One Left,’ it just got so complicated narratively that I was lost and in the weeds.”

Blithely I bypass the lap pool; not once in my adult life have I craved more repetitive activity. Instead I set up shop on the side of the warm-water pool — foam weights, kickboard, noodle — and, slipping into the 92-degree water, I sense a holy transition. The others arrive by way of a long ramp, discarding canes or walkers, hoisting themselves from wheelchairs, fingers trailing in deepening water. The Santa Fe Community College warm-water pool is not a place to be seen. Pathetically, valiantly, I worked my way up to 15 minutes of recumbent exercise, to 30 minutes, to walking on a treadmill.

When constructing this list, Doody urges job seekers to include items beyond just salary, benefits and other "life-sustaining criteria." If you end up in the latter situation, Doody says it's not too late for a job criteria list to be helpful.

GENEVA, July 24 (Reuters) - A 28-year-old man has tested positive for the potentially fatal Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in a city in Abu Dhabi on the border with Oman, the World Health Organization said on Monday. The man in the city of Al Ain was admitted to hospital last month, the WHO said in a statement. The WHO said there were no signs the man had come into contact with dromedary camels, which spread the disease that is separate from COVID-19. The United Arab Emirates' health ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the case.
