Bullard: Recession a risk, but more on a global than U.S. basis

St. Louis Fed President James Bullard speaks about the U.S. economy during an interview in New York February 26, 2015. But with strong U.S. job growth and strong household balance sheets, "talk about the recession story should be more on a global basis than a U.S. basis," he said, with the possibility of Europe and China pulling the rest of the world into a downturn. Those high rates will, Bullard said, have to be maintained for "some time," a fact that has triggered a fast repricing of financial assets in recent weeks and raised concerns that Fed policy is heightening risks for the global economy. "We certainly do internalize the spillover effects" of Fed policy, Bullard said. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationHONG KONG, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Asian markets attempted to stabilise on Tuesday after a wild few days of stumbling stocks, crumbling bonds, a plunging pound and soaring dollar, with the dollar easing a bit and stocks flat. S&P 500 futures rose 0.7%, and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) fell 0.1%. After two weeks of mostly steady losses on the U.S. stock market, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) confirmed on Monday that it was in a bear market, tracing its start to declines in early January. The dollar index on Tuesday eased 0.1% to 113.8, after earlier touching 114.58, its strongest against a basket of peer currencies since May 2002.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen holds a news conference in the Cash Room at the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, U.S. July 28, 2022. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoWASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - A planned Western price cap on Russian oil is already making a difference, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday, noting that Russia was now offering China and India "enormous discounts" while looking for other outlets for its oil. In December, Europe would halt the bulk of its purchases of 3 million barrels per day, putting additional pressure on Russia to find new buyers for its oil, Yellen told a conference hosted by The Atlantic magazine. Europe was facing a tough winter with tight energy supplies as it decoupled from Russian energy, Yellen said. Dr. Anthony Fauci said he's "keeping a completely open mind" about the origins of the pandemic. Fauci told an audience the Chinese government is "probably" hiding something about the origins of the virus. Fauci recalls the painstaking efforts it took to get information on that outbreak from Chinese officials. Hiding information creates a perfect breeding ground for conspiracy theories, Fauci said"It's natural, totally natural for conspiracy people who are thinking it's a conspiracy to say, 'see? And, "they probably are," Fauci said, but it may not have anything to do with a lab leak at all.
That left the yield curve even more inverted, a signal of looming recession. Those declines have come as the Fed has already tightened rates by 300 basis points this year. "We might not see as strong returns in the equity markets going forward now that interest rates have been somewhat normalized." The shape of the Treasury yield curve, where short-term rates stand above longer-term ones, supports caution as well. Known as an inverted yield curve, the phenomenon has preceded past recessions.
U.S. President Joe Biden walks from Marine One to the White House following a trip from Michigan, in Washington, U.S., September 14, 2022. Here are some of the key takeaways from the White House's new crypto framework. Fighting illicit financeOne section of the White House's new framework on crypto regulation focuses on eliminating illegal activity in the industry — and the measures proposed appear to have real teeth. Crime is rife in the digital asset sector. Then there's the hypothetical digital dollar that would be the Federal Reserve's take on a CBDC.
A high-stakes debt ceiling standoff in Washington could have spillover effects on state spending plans that rely heavily on federal aid to fund a variety of social programs and transportation projects. Policy experts say failing to suspend or raise the debt limit could disrupt spending at the state level, particularly with regard to the recently enacted $1.2 trillion infrastructure law. “We don't have experience of a federal default,” said Jared Walczak, vice president of state projects at the Tax Foundation. "Federal default has never happened and everyone hopes and expects that it won't happen now," Walczak said. It is the National Association of State Budget Officers, not the National Association of State Budget Officials.
China's National Health Commission on Friday reported an additional 121 deaths nationwide, with 5,090 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus. She explained that not only was this strain of the new virus, COVID-19, different than SARS but China and the world economy had also changed. China only represented 8% of the world economy in the early 2000s and now makes up a 19% share, she pointed out. She added that the world economy at that time was "actually in quite good shape," but was now more "sluggish." Physicians have likened it to the outbreak of SARS, which had a short incubation period of two to seven days.
