There was a perverse view this year that bad economic news was actually good news for the stock market, as the heat coming off the economy would give the Federal Reserve the greenlight to cut interest rates. This made some sense with inflation for the first time in a while becoming the primary market bogeyman over a slowing economy. Announced layoffs last month were the highest for any July in more than two decades, outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported. Investors got what they thought they wanted, with the 10-year Treasury yield breaking below 4% for the first time since February. Even tech stocks found themselves in the red as they too, may be hurt more by a slowing economy, than their valuations are boosted by lower rates.

With this week's earnings beat, we'll likely see META test the upper end of this new trading range. Here we can see the recent trading range in much better context, but we can also see weakening momentum conditions. The declining momentum on the weekly chart suggests a serious headwind to META's attempt to break out of its recent trading range. DuPont's water and protection segment may have seen a year-over-year decline in sales, but what matters most is that revenue was up 8% sequentially. Notably, DuPont's Water Solutions and Tyvek medical packaging businesses in China — an economy that's lately been a thorn in the side of so many companies — helped drive the quarter-over-quarter expansion. While there's been speculation that DuPont's water business is attracting interest from peers, management said the company has not had conversations about an outright sale. The range for operating EBITDA was raised to $3.06 billion to $3.11 billion, up from $2.9 billion to $3.05 billion previously. DuPont's third-quarter guidance of roughly $3.2 billion in sales, $815 million in operating EBITDA and adjusted EPS of $1.03 essentially matched expectations.

Recent economic data has pointed toward inflation data falling back toward the central bank's 2% target, while the unemployment rates has crept up above 4%. Powell said Wednesday that central bankers would be "data dependent, but not data-point dependent" in determining when to cut rates. "I don't know think of the labor market in its current state as a likely source of significant inflationary pressures. So I would not like to see material further cooling in the labor market," Powell said. Powell said Wednesday a potential 50-basis point rate cut is "not something we're thinking about right now."
