☆ The UAW’s deal to end the auto strike could be in trouble

The Ford vote in Kentucky showed 55% of the members at the Kentucky Truck plant voting against the deal. That plant went on strike with little notice on October 12, about three weeks into the strike that targeted specific plants at the company. Members at Ford’s nearby Louisville Assembly plant who belong to the same union local voted 53% in favor of the deal. A vote tracker on the UAW site shows that 65% of members at Ford who have voted so far approve of the deal. So far the vote at Stellantis has overwhelming support, with 82% of the members who have voted supporting the deal.

New York CNN —The United Automobile Workers’ won big wage and benefit gains in tentative contract agreements with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. Now, non-union companies are rushing to give their non-unionized workers raises, too. Toyota said it’s raising wages by more than 9%, and Honda announced 11% wage hikes beginning next year. While the auto companies didn’t directly attribute their raises to the UAW, the UAW has said it will be targeting non-union factories in the wake of its big wins. UAW President Shawn Fain already encouraged non-union autoworkers to join the UAW, and Fain has called the non-union wage increases the “UAW bump.” The UAW hopes its new contracts with Detroit automakers will inspire other workers to unionize.

South Korean automaker Hyundai has joined Honda and Toyota in raising factory worker wages after the United Auto Workers union reached new contract agreements with Detroit automakers. Toyota raised factory pay 9% to 10% starting in January, while Honda said it will increase wages 11% during the same period. Fain said terrified auto executives at nonunion plants are raising wages, and he called Toyota's pay increase the UAW bump. By early next year the company said it will have increased factory worker pay 14% in the past year. With its increases, Toyota’s top factory worker pay will go to $34.80 per hour in January.

CNN —Disney has a mess on its hands to marvel at. The embarrassingly weak debut marked the worst opening for any Marvel Studios film in its history. But, in recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has started to show serious signs of trouble. Those films — all of which were released after “Endgame” — are the four worst-reviewed films in Marvel history, according to Rotten Tomatoes averages. And the movies failed to earn an A-rating from CinemaScore, a feat almost all Marvel films easily accomplished, signaling deeper troubles with audience reception and crushing word-of-mouth.

The latest entrant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hauled in an estimated $47 million domestically over its debut weekend, the lowest in franchise history. Internationally, "The Marvels" garnered $63.3 million in ticket sales, bringing its global haul to $110.3 million. Still, Disney had an uphill battle drawing moviegoers to theaters for its 33rd MCU film. The tech theme has been reigning supreme this year and one segment in particular stands out to Morgan Stanley: the memory sector. The Morgan Stanley analysts have penciled in a 14% price hike for NAND and 10% increase for DRAM this quarter. Even so, Morgan Stanley says that the recovery in the memory sector is just starting and is still "front-running a lot of good things that are supposed to happen much later." Top pick and buy-rated stocks The optimistic outlook for the memory sector spells good news for a raft of stocks in Asia. Morgan Stanley is overweight on the stock and gives it a price target of 500 New Taiwanese dollars ($15.52), or around 1% upside.

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker will attend Thursday's event, where Biden will make remarks, the official said. The new Stellantis investments include $1.5 billion in the Toledo Jeep operations, including building an EV Jeep Wrangler in 2028. The UAW said Stellantis wanted to cut 5,000 jobs going into the talks.
