At the height of their careers, the Gao Brothers created provocative sculptures of Mao in a country notoriously sensitive about its former ruler’s legacy. Due to the “deteriorating environment” in China, Gao Zhen relocated to New York two years ago when his son, an American citizen born in the US, reached school age, Gao Qiang said. “Before he set off, his friends and family — myself included — had all reminded him to consider whether it was safe to go,” Gao Qiang said. “Our father’s death was a devastating disaster for our family.” Gao Zhen told the Southern People Weekly, a once-outspoken news outlet, in 2010. Gao Zhen’s detention shows that freedom of expression in China has shrunk significantly compared to a decade ago, Gao Qiang said.

Reinhard parted ways with previous ad sales leader Peter Naylor in July, in Netflix's second ads leadership shake-up in two years. To get a sense of how Reinhard is approaching the hire, Business Insider spoke with 11 people who had inside knowledge about the search or who are close to Netflix's ad business. Others with those credentials who some insiders think could be in the mix include Pooja Midha, EVP and GM for Effectv, the ad sales arm of Comcast's cable division. "They view ad sales as having a lack of rigor and discipline," the first person who'd had conversations with Netflix said. Netflix also shook up its ad sales leadership twice, with its first ads leader Jeremi Gorman being replaced after a year, and then with Naylor's recent exit.

Thailand is working on a new game plan to boost foreigner arrivals and increase tourism spending: casinos. The strategy has worked for Macao — which has overtaken Las Vegas as the world's largest gambling hub — and Singapore, with two successful 14-year-old casinos. If Thailand's draft bill gets passed into law, the country could be Macao and Singapore's largest competitor by the end of the decade, industry watchers told CNBC. If the law gets passed, Thailand's casinos could generate 187 billion Thai baht ($5.5 billion) in revenues, or 1% of the country's GDP, according to Maybank research. The Thai economy grew 1.9% in 2023, and is expected to grow 2.7% this year, the finance ministry said.

Film and TV investor Content Partners just announced a new financing arm at a time when some institutional investors are fleeing Hollywood. It kicked off with a deal providing debt financing to Media Capital Technologies to support its backing of Lionsgate's film slate. Content Partners Capital (CPC) is targeting up to five deals a year of up to $100 million each in debt financing for film and TV companies. Lordo said Content Partners saw a void to help entertainment companies that are stuck in a financing bind, unable to get bank or private-equity backing. AdvertisementMissy Scalise has begun using AI to cut down on the amount of work she has to do after hours. In 2023, the World Economic Forum reported that employers expected 44% of workers' skills to be "disrupted" within five years. Another challenge with inserting AI into an organization is that it's often difficult to tell which skills workers possess and where they might need training. Charlotte Relyea, a senior partner at McKinsey & Co., believes that leaders need to plan now so they can better forecast the abilities workers will need. Leaders need to think about this as a transformation — what she described as "painting the picture of the future."

Wildfires and their burn scars have made portions of the trail more hazardous and forced hikers to contend with closures on quick notice. Meanwhile, when fast-moving wildfires strike, many rural communities along the trail are finding themselves responsible for helping vulnerable hikers. “Wildfire season is lasting longer, becoming less predictable, affecting more trail, more trail users and more trail communities,” Rylee said. Speaking at a press conference, prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the investigation is not currently directed at any individuals, and is looking into “the crime of culpable shipwreck and multiple manslaughter." New Zealander James Cutfield has already been questioned for more than two hours, and prosecutors said he had been "extremely cooperative." Bad weather was forecast ahead of the sinking, and questions about the weather were also raised by journalists. Why dividend stocks should be a hot play into fall
  + stars: | 2024-08-24 | by ( Ellie Stevens | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
It appears more investors are eyeing dividend stocks ahead of the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision in September. Paul Baiocchi of SS&C ALPS Advisors thinks it is a sound strategy because he sees the Fed easing rates. ALPS is the issuer of several dividend exchange-traded funds including the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Quality Dividend ETF (OUSA) and its counterpart, the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Small-Cap Quality Dividend ETF (OUSM). Relative to the S&P 500 , both dividend ETFs are overweight health care, financials and industrials , according to Baiocchi. Mike Akins, ETF Action's founding partner, views OUSA and OUSM as defensive strategies because the stocks generally have clean balance sheets.
