What might have been surprising was which party would fit which role. Even as Republicans meeting in Milwaukee put on a show of unity for former President Donald J. Trump, Democrats are still stewing over President Biden’s insistence on staying in the race and in some cases even plotting how to press him to step aside. The assassination attempt against Mr. Trump last weekend diverted attention from the Democratic discord but did not solve the problem. Indeed, many Democrats are just as convinced as ever that Mr. Biden cannot beat Mr. Trump and should step aside in favor of a candidate who might have a better chance. Mr. Schiff’s decision was especially noteworthy because he is a close ally of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

CNN —Former Donald Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro was released from a Miami federal prison Wednesday after completing his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the January 6 congressional committee. Trump adviser Steve Bannon started serving his four-month sentence earlier this month at a federal prison in Connecticut. Navarro, who is in his 70s, worked as a law library clerk during his time in the prison camp, his prison consultant Sam Mangel told CNN. “It gave him a chance to write.”Mangel said Navarro was liked and respected by his fellow inmates while in the prison. While Navarro was unsuccessful in an emergency appeal to delay his prison sentence, he is now appealing his conviction on the merits.

Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

The Ruth Westheimer that fellow residents of her Manhattan apartment building knew was much the same person known to America as Dr. Ruth: gregarious, funny, peppy and apt to throw out a provocative question in the elevator. “She was the most well-loved person who lived here,” said Geoffrey Katin, 81, a longtime resident of the building, in Washington Heights. Dr. Westheimer, who died on Friday at 96, was America’s best-known sex therapist. But her explicit and direct advice, delivered in a casual and jovial manner, was not just for the cameras. Neighbors enjoyed bumping into her in the building, never certain how she might strike up a conversation.
