Otherwise, your lender might not approve your mortgage refinance, experts say. A change in your financial situation, like a layoff or lower income, or higher debt, could mean you don't qualify. "Your mortgage rate and whether or not you get approved for a loan or refinance ... depends on you," said Channel. You refinanced recently Technically, there are no hard limits on how many times you can refinance your mortgage, Channel said. It may be in your best interest to only consider a mortgage refinance every few years, if your financial situation has changed or if rates are falling "really dramatically," Channel explained.

Oil edges up following U.S. rate cut move, geopolitical concerns
  + stars: | 2024-09-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices gained slightly during early trade on Monday, boosted by concerns conflict in the Middle East may impact supply in the key producing region and expectations the U.S. interest rate cut last week will support demand. Both contracts rose in the previous session on support from the U.S. interest rate cut and a dip in U.S. supply in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. Last Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by half a percentage point, a larger decrease in borrowing costs than many expected. Interest rate cuts typically boost economic activity and energy demand, but analysts and market participants are concerned the central bank may see a slowing job market. "Sentiment was buoyed by the Fed's rate cut amid hopes it can engineer a soft landing for the economy," said ANZ.

On Friday, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, pardoned and commuted the sentences of 2,887 prisoners. He had already served some prison time but was out on bail in 2023 pending the court’s decision.

The White House wants to close a trade loophole exploited by Chinese discount e-retailers — a move that would have a ripple effect on at least two of our portfolio stocks: Amazon and Meta Platforms. The de minimis exemption has allowed Chinese e-commerce giants, particularly low-cost Temu and Shein, to flourish. Temu has risen in popularity in the U.S. for selling items directly from Chinese merchants at massive discounts. Temu is generally seen as a growing competitor to Amazon since its prices are often lower. Meta challenges On the other hand, the trade shift could present a challenge for Meta, which relies on advertising from e-commerce platforms.

Read previewApple Intelligence didn't come with the latest iPhone 16 drop on September 20, but that won't matter — analysts are confident that it'll still boost iPhone 16 sales throughout the next 12 months as Apple releases the AI-powered features in multiple software updates. "Apple Intelligence is still the big driver," Gil Luria, an Apple analyst for D.A. The analyst compared Apple Intelligence's sales boost potential to the excitement around 5G coverage for iPhone 12 about four years ago. According to the analyst, the difference now is that Apple Intelligence won't come out of the box. Luria, the Apple analyst, told BI that Apple Intelligence won't be a popular feature until people can start using it, comparing it to AI's dominance after ChatGPT was released to the public in 2022.

Federal prosecutors on Monday said in a new court filing that Ryan Routh, the accused would-be assassin of Donald Trump, stalked the ex-president for a month before being arrested last week outside of his Florida golf course. Prosecutors also revealed that investigators had found, in a backpack and shopping bag linked to Routh, plates that "were capable of stopping small arms fire." And "during a search of the Nissan Xterra" that Routh had used, "FBI agents found two additional license plates," the court filing said. One of the cell phones contained a Google search of how to travel from Palm Beach County to Mexico," the filing said. "The agents also found 12pairs of gloves; a Hawaii Driver's License in the Defendant's name; a passport in the Defendant's name."

If you had as much as a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? Balanced-to-medium risk profile With as much as $1 million to invest with, investors can buy individual securities instead of being restricted to funds, said David Dietze, managing principal and senior portfolio strategist at Peapack Private Wealth Management. "A much smaller amount leaves an investor forced to invest in funds to get adequate diversification. With one million, one could say invest $20K in fifty different stocks and be well diversified," he said. More aggressive risk profile Gambles says that taking on a more aggressive stance would mean an "all in commitment" on the themes he expects will perform, and removing any hedges against those trades.

But while lower mortgage rates may translate to more buying power for homebuyers, America’s housing market woes aren’t likely to be solved solely by rate cuts. But Enterprise Community Partners, the nonprofit where Donovan currently serves as CEO, estimates that the US needs 7 million new units in order to stabilize the housing market. “There are a lot of factors that have affected the housing supply and these are complicated issues to solve. “We’re not expecting mortgage rates to fall that much further, and we still think that the mortgage rate ‘lock-in’ effect will still be there,” Dougherty said. “Things will probably pick up as rates come down, but we’re not looking for a high-octane rebound,” Dougherty said of the housing market.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Recycling has not kept pace with plastic production, which has doubled over the past 20 years.

In the flood of election polls you’ll see over the next few weeks, most polling groups will include responses from “likely voters.” And often from nobody else. In theory, these poll numbers should yield more accurate results, since the people who actually vote are the ones who dictate the outcome on Election Day. After all, how exactly can a pollster know who is “likely” to vote, and who therefore will be the focus of their results? The choices they make are important, because the results of likely-voter polls can differ from those that sample a wider population, such as everyone who is registered to vote. In a close race like this year’s presidential contest, one candidate might lead in a poll among likely voters, while another might lead in the same poll’s tally of registered voters.
