PARIS (AP) — Dior's menswear maestro Kim Jones transformed a sunny afternoon in Paris into a starlit evening of balletic grandeur at Paris Fashion Week, in a display of fashion theatrics. Inspired by the legendary ballet icons Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, Jones delivered an exuberant spectacle at the Ecole Militaire annex on Friday. Amid the haunting melodies of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” the collection intertwined Dior’s fine tailoring with a joyful explosion of theatrical glamour. JUNYA WATANABE’S THRIFT-SHOP CHICJunya Watanabe unveiled a collection that was a masterful blend of eerie mood-setting and aggressive urban fashion. The clothes featured a mix of traditional tailoring and streetwear elements, a nod to his 2001 debut when he first merged high fashion with everyday wear.

Andrew Kelly | ReutersAfter years of unbridled consumer spending on everything from home improvement to dream vacations, some companies are now finding the limits of their pricing power. Nike last week lowered its annual sales growth forecast and unveiled plans to cut costs by $2 billion over the next three years. "Goods companies don't have the pricing power they did in the pandemic, and some in the hotel and travel [industries] — they don't have the pricing power they did in the immediate post-Covid," he added. Sales growth for companies in the S&P 500 is on track to average 2.7% this year, according to mid-December analyst estimates posted by FactSet. Consumer spending on apparel and groceries rose 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively, from the year-earlier period, according to the survey.

That’s similar to the rate for Hispanic and Alaska Native patients – and nearly double the rate for white patients. Nearly 30% of Black respondents prepare to be insulted, also about double the rate for white patients. Asians and Hispanics were three times more likely to say they’ve been treated badly in a health care setting because of their race than white respondents and Black respondents were 6 times more likely. “The consequences in health care are really striking and very frightening, honestly, to understand what people need to do to be taken seriously, to be seen as a whole person,” she said.

Signet Jewelers CEO Gina Drosos told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday that marriage proposals are finally on the rise, years after Covid disrupted typical dating patterns and hurt the company's business. "We know a lot about dating couples, and so we feel quite confident that our predictions are right, and that the engagement trough has happened," Drosos said. Bridal jewelry, especially engagement rings, makes up about 50% of Signet's sales, said Drosos. The company attributed poor sales in recent years to the slowed dating and stalled relationships brought on by isolation during the pandemic. Signet's surveys also suggest that younger generations have a greater desire to get engaged than in years past, she added.

How Jewish People Built the American Theater
  + stars: | 2023-11-29 | by ( Jesse Green | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +46 min
Let Us Tell You A Story How Jewish people built the American theater as we know it. The theater, which for many Jews was a major way of becoming American in the first place, seems unable to acknowledge that the danger that American Jews face is not just historical, and not just onstage. (Both of Adler’s parents were Yiddish theater stars — her father, Jacob Adler, was a renowned Shylock in 1903.) Embedding their own observation and experience within Stanislavsky’s, along with the best of Yiddish theater and a generous dollop of Freud, they converted the American theater to Judaism. Sara Krulwich/The New York TimesThe Jewish contribution to the creation of the American theater was built on the acknowledgment of a larger humanity alive within each of us, available to some, with natural empathy and rigorous training.
