It was the undercard that underwhelmed. The third straight Republican presidential debate that former President Donald J. Trump has skipped — choosing instead to rally with supporters a few miles away — represented a critical and shrinking chance for his rivals to close his chasm of a polling advantage. And with only five candidates on the stage for the first time — Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Tim Scott — they all had far more time to speak. Yet they had precious little to say about Mr. Trump, even when given the chance just over two months before the Iowa caucuses. Nov 3 (Reuters) - Republican presidential primary candidates will need to meet relatively stringent polling requirements to participate in the fourth debate in December, the Republican National Committee said on Friday, which could result in a winnowing of the field. The debate is set to take place in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on Dec. 6, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Those are crucial states in the nominating process, as they are the first four to select their preferred nominee. Traditionally, candidates that fail to make a debate stage lose the attention of the media, voters and donors. The third Republican debate, which has a similarly structured polling threshold of 4%, will take place on Wednesday in Miami.

Sen. Tim Scott's presidential campaign, once seen as emerging force, has faltered in recent weeks. Scott has sought to offer an optimistic message to voters, but Trump remains on top in the GOP race. The rise of fellow South Carolinian Nikki Haley has also complicated Scott's path to the nomination. Over the course of Scott's campaign, his campaign has so far focused heavily on winning the Iowa caucuses, and during the summer he was seemingly clipping at Florida Gov. A leading Scott backer, who spoke to Politico anonymously, remarked that the senator's campaign team "fundamentally miscalculated what it means to run for president and generate news coverage."

For many if not most Republican primary voters, Mr. Trump is the equivalent of an incumbent president (and to some, he still is president), and incumbents generally get renominated with ease.
