CNN —Narendra Modi has raised India’s stature on the global stage like no other recent leader of the world’s most populous country. But the election results also place Modi in a radically different position from the one he enjoyed during his first decade in power. Now, Modi’s BJP will need to answer the interests of its coalition allies – and face stronger checks from a resurgent opposition, which could dampen its Hindu-nationalist agenda. In the meantime, some observers suggest that while the election results may not have boosted Modi, they are already a boon for India’s global clout. “India coming back as a proper democracy is good for the world order in many senses,” he added.

PVH , parent of the Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands, should see strong earnings ahead, according to UBS. Analyst Jay Sole kept his buy rating and hiked his price target on the clothing maker by 9%, or $14, to $174, which implies a potential upside of 43%. "We think PVH has the brand strength and balance sheet to drive earnings growth over the long term," Sole said in a Thursday note. He forecast PVH delivering five-year earnings growing at a 10.5% compound annual growth rate and raised his FY26 earnings per share estimate to 4%. The company probably saw 65% of sales and nearly 90% of profits coming outside North America, Sole said, but should be able to drive U.S. sales growth moving forward.

CNN —With an election looming, President Biden’s new executive action on the border aims to send a loud and clear message about his approach to immigration. The president’s proclamation, announced Tuesday, still allows for the normal flow of commerce and legal immigration across the border. But it bars migrants who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum once a daily threshold is met. Border authorities encountered around 3,500 migrants crossing the border unlawfully on Monday, according to a Homeland Security official, above the threshold needed for the executive action to take effect. And immigrant rights advocates warn that closing the border to asylum seekers will endanger vulnerable people and ultimately make the border less safe.

Senator Rick Scott is so furious over the felony conviction of former President Donald J. Trump that the Florida Republican says he and his colleagues need to take it out on the Senate, by acting as disrupters and blocking all Biden administration nominees and legislation. “We can’t have business as usual,” Mr. Scott insisted as the Senate convened this week for the first time since Mr. Trump’s trial ended in New York with a fusillade of “guilty” verdicts. Yet so far at least, business as usual it is. Despite the far-right conservative bloc vowing to draw the line against White House nominees and Democratic legislation, three nominees — one a judge for the usually pummeled District of Columbia, no less — have breezed through the Senate this week with plenty of Republican backing. side is willing to draw such a hard line in a fit of pique.

Many companies are in the AI infrastructure buildout phase right now. That's because, in order to enable AI applications, companies have to make the switch from "general purpose computing to accelerated computing," she said. "You can't run AI on traditional compute, it would be prohibitively expensive, and far too energy intensive," said Pleydell-Bouverie. That's a 35% increase from last year, she said, and all this incremental investment is being directed to AI initiatives. The emergence of new regional payment systems likely won't spur de-dollarization, OMFIF said. According to commentary published Thursday, obstacles are already afflicting new regional payment systems, even as de-dollarization rhetoric creeps up. There is a focus on fake stories to influence attitudes on subjects like the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. But for the past year, the climate crisis has been the second-most targeted subject, according to the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO). Official statistics, however, tell a different story: In 2022, renewables accounted for 23% of the energy consumed in the EU. The EU is considered a global leader in tackling planet-heating pollution, but climate disinformation could undermine the bloc’s ambitious goal to reduce carbon emissions by 90% by 2040, compared with 1990 levels. Its community standards policy in the past had only targeted video, but in April, it was expanded to include audio.

CNN —Joe Biden is pushing progressives who are already sour on his presidency to the limit with a tough new executive action barring most asylum applications from migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. Of all issues tested, Biden recorded his lowest approval rating on immigration in a CNN poll in February — just 30%.
