It’s been said that a bad day at the fair is always better than a good day at work. Ron DeSantis of Florida, those two ideas collided on Saturday in Iowa. Tennessee has sharply restricted the conditions under which it will restore voting rights to people who have completed prison sentences for felonies, joining a growing list of Republican-controlled states that have rolled back access to the ballot by former felons. The state has for years permitted most people with completed felony sentences to restore their voting rights through an administrative process established in 2006 that is ostensibly automatic, but in practice almost unnavigable. Ron DeSantis is for now resisting calls to dramatically change course in his presidential campaign, instead targeting the first debate in late August as his opportunity to alter the trajectory of the race. DeSantis’ campaign has already surpassed the donor threshold requirement of 40,000 unique donors and appears on track to meet the polling threshold as well. Online posts have circulated the claim that Fox News analyst Juan Williams was hired by Republican U.S. presidential candidate Ron DeSantis’ campaign team. Both Fox News and Ron DeSantis’ campaigns have said there is no truth to online posts claiming Williams is joining the Florida governor’s presidential campaign team. A tweet said: “Presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis has hired former Fox News contributor Juan Williams to his campaign management team” (here). There is no mention of plans to join the DeSantis campaign on Williams’ official Twitter or Facebook accounts (twitter.com/TheJuanWilliams) and (here). As of July 12, 2023, both Fox News and DeSantis’ team told Reuters there is no truth to claims that Fox News analyst Juan Williams was hired by the Florida governor’s presidential campaign.

New York CNN —Disney CEO Bob Iger said Disney wants to avoid the so-called culture wars but defiantly pushed back against right-wing critics who have claimed Disney is adding inappropriate sexual content to its programming. “The notion that Disney is in any way sexualizing children is preposterous and inaccurate,” Iger said in a CNBC interview Thursday. Some Republican politicians, including Florida Gov. DeSantis has called Disney a “woke” corporation and has tried to make his verbal and legal attacks on Disney a winning political message. Disney (DIS) also owns ESPN, but Iger said that he’s “bullish” on sports and wants to stay in the sports business.

Even though Democrats held off a widely expected red wave in the 2022 midterm elections, Republican turnout was in fact stronger, and the party energized key demographic groups including women, Latinos and rural voters, according to a report released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center. The report serves as a warning sign for Democrats ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with early polls pointing toward a possible rematch between President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump. People who had voted in past elections but sat out 2022 were overwhelmingly Democrats. And for all the Democratic emphasis on finding Republican voters who could be persuaded to buck their party in the Trump era, Pew found that a vast majority of voters stuck with the same party through the 2018, 2020 and 2022 elections. Just 6 percent of voters cast ballots for more than one party over those three elections — and those voters were more likely to be Democrats flipping to Republican candidates than Republicans to Democratic candidates.
