My own opinion on the matter makes no sense whatsoever — at least not the opinion that A.I. I checked the other day after seeing a social media post that described me as not approving of trans people. McWhorter also suggested other gender-neutral pronouns, including ‘que, ‘s/he, and ‘one.’”Hmm, not a word of that is true. I wouldn’t be caught dead endorsing the ungainly, unpronounceable “s/he” or the hopelessly wooden “one,” and God knows what “que” is. Plus, “they” had already been used in a singular, gender-neutral way (“Each student has an hour to complete their test”) for several centuries.

President Biden is expected on Wednesday to pardon American veterans who were convicted of engaging in gay sex under a military code that outlawed the behavior for more than 60 years. Mr. Biden’s proclamation would grant clemency to some 2,000 people who were charged between 1951 and 2013, addressing a “historic wrong,” as the president said in a statement the White House released ahead of the announcement. “Today, I am righting an historic wrong by using my clemency authority to pardon many former service members who were convicted simply for being themselves,” Mr. Biden said in the statement. “Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of L.G.B.T.Q.I.+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2013, Congress voted to repeal the portion of the code that outlawed consensual sodomy.

Last week, Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, a Democrat, signed an executive order pardoning 175,000 marijuana convictions, saying, “Today, we take a big step forward toward ensuring equal justice for all.” But, he said, “this won’t be our last effort. We must continue to move in partnership to build a state and society that is more equitable, more just and leaves no one behind.”Meanwhile, Governor Jeff Landry of Louisiana, a Republican, has recently signed several bills that he says are intended to “expand faith in public schools.”One requires teachers and other school employees to address transgender students using the pronouns for the genders listed on their birth certificates — “God gives us our mark,” Landry said. The governor, The Advocate reported last year, “has an intensely anti-L.G.B.T.Q.+ record, having opposed anti-discrimination protections even though he has a gay brother” and, as Louisiana’s attorney general, he “pushed the state’s ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth.”Earlier this month, as nola.com reports, Landry also signed a bill to “block transgender people from using facilities in schools, prisons and domestic violence shelters that align with their gender identity.” In a statement, he said that the bill “protects women’s safety and reinforces the very definition of what it means to be a woman.”

Health officials in the Biden administration pressed an international group of medical experts to remove age limits for adolescent surgeries from guidelines for care of transgender minors, according to newly unsealed court documents. Age minimums, officials feared, could fuel growing political opposition to such treatments. If and when teenagers should be allowed to undergo transgender treatments and surgeries has become a raging debate within the political world. In the United States, setting age limits was controversial from the start. The draft guidelines, released in late 2021, recommended lowering the age minimums to 14 for hormonal treatments, 15 for mastectomies, 16 for breast augmentation or facial surgeries, and 17 for genital surgeries or hysterectomies.

Finland has a history of being the happiest country in the world, and it's among the most gender-equal, too. Many Nordic countries have generous paid leave policies, government-subsidized child care, free college (which can level access to high-paying jobs), pay gap reporting requirements and pay transparency policies. At Framery, a Finnish manufacturing company with roughly 400 employees, the difference between what men and women get paid is roughly 1%. Anni Hallila, Framery's head of people and culture, explains three strategies that helped them effectively close their business's gender pay gap. Salary reviews happen twice a yearFramery's compensation team does a pay audit for their workforce twice a year, Hallila says.

Differences like these lead researchers like me to wonder what factors influence the telling of lies. Figuring out the frequency of liesMost research on lying asks participants to self-report their lying behavior, say during the past day or week. This result became the benchmark finding in the field of honesty research and helped lead to an assumption among many researchers that lying is commonplace. It could be that each person in the group tells one or two lies per day. Many lies occur in the heat of the moment, so it makes sense that when there’s a delay in communication, as with email, lying would decrease.

President Biden’s decision on Wednesday to pardon thousands of L.G.B.T.Q. service members who had been unfairly punished, discharged or court-martialed for their sexual orientation or gender identity was long overdue. His proclamation will restore benefits and honor to 2,000 or so service members, just atonement for the U.S. military’s long, discriminatory history against L.G.B.T.Q. service members were outed upon returning home, which inevitably led to further discrimination. In the 1960s, there were six people of working age for every retired person, according to the World Economic Forum. “What you’re seeing is increased spending on programs like Medicare and Social Security as the baby boomers are aging into those programs. And then of course, fewer workers relative to the number of people who are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits,” said Dahl. Social Security payments still provide about 90% of income for more than a quarter of older adults in the United States, according to Social Security Agency surveys. But without intervention, the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by the mid-2030s, meaning that only a portion of retirees’ expected benefits will be paid out.

Through advertising, campaign events and news conferences, Democrats are fanning out across the country, working to remind voters that it was justices nominated by Mr. Trump who helped overturn Roe v. Wade. “Donald Trump is the sole person responsible for this nightmare,” President Biden said in a statement on Monday. “Fundamentally on this issue, it’s about freedom,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in an MSNBC interview that is set to run in full on Monday. A view of the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, U.S., June 17, 2024. WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday waded into the contentious debate over gender-affirming care for transgender minors by agreeing to resolve challenges to a law in Tennessee that seeks to restrict it. The justices will review an appeals court ruling that upheld the measure. In a separate case, the court in April allowed Idaho to mostly enforce a similar law. The plaintiffs then asked the Supreme Court to step in.

It’s a strange time for gay rights in America. As the country nears the 10th anniversary of the legalization of gay marriage nationwide, support for same-sex unions has risen to 70 percent of the American public. Even Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage, is under attack. Clearly, marriage equality was not enough to bring full equality to L.G.B.T.Q. But the gay marriage campaign was a major missed opportunity to expand L.G.B.T.Q.

The Supreme Court agreed on Monday to decide whether a Tennessee law that bans certain medical treatments for transgender minors violates the Constitution. The move means the court will for the first time hear arguments on the issue of medical care for transgender youth. The Biden administration had asked the justices to take up the case, United States v. Skrmetti, arguing that the measure outlaws treatment for gender dysphoria in youths and “frames that prohibition in explicitly sex-based terms.”In the government’s petition to the court, Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar wrote that the law bans transgender medical care but that it “leaves the same treatments entirely unrestricted if they are prescribed for any other purpose.”

Male Kindergarten Teachers Are Here to Help. Many studies show that older boys benefit from having male teachers. There hasn’t been as much research on the youngest students and their teachers — in large part because there are so few male teachers in early education to begin with. Social-emotional learning has given them vocabulary to express their feelings, said Greg Smedley-Warren, 45, a kindergarten teacher in Nashville. “It’s like unlocking a new market of potential educators.”The male kindergarten teachers said that from their perspective, the fulfillment of the job generally outweighed the negatives.

From the start, the three conservative board members of the Temecula Valley Unified School District made clear where they stood. On the same night in December 2022 that they were sworn in as a majority, they passed a resolution banning critical race theory from classrooms in their Southern California district. Months later, they abruptly fired the superintendent, saying they believed the district needed someone with new ideas. After that, they passed a rule requiring that parents be notified whenever a student requests to be identified as a different gender at school. The moves were applauded by conservatives, many of them Christian churchgoers who had helped to install the new board members, hoping that Temecula Valley could remain an island of traditional values in a liberal state.
