Read previewThe year 2020 was supposed to be when I could finally take it easy and focus on myself. I decided to leave my career in accounting behind and finally take a crack at my lifelong dream of being a writer. But Lebanon's banking system collapsed — the World Bank called it a Ponzi scheme — and the country entered a financial crisis. Call it youthful naivety, but I didn't have a reentry plan in case I needed to return to work. The Lebanese financial crisis continued long after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hunter Biden’s legal case is, at its root, a story about the toxic, careless choices made by a drug addict. It’s about the fact that addicts weave tragedy into their own lives and into the lives of those around them. Addicts don’t think about other people; they think about themselves. And they lie — that’s how they supply their addiction. He had to watch his daughter take the stand and testify, something that’s intimidating, even frightening, under any circumstances.

The saying is ubiquitous on wedding invitations, picture frames, and heart-shaped lockets: "Today, I marry my best friend." And I did marry mine, a wonderful man who became a close friend before anything else. Back then, I believed that best friends made the most compatible partners, and maybe that's true for some couples. During a recent girls' trip, my best friend's friendly ex-husband texted her a picture of his new baby. Ditto for another close friend who I've known since birth, who hangs out with both my ex and me when she visits from Philly.

Read previewSome might say a universal basic income is wishful thinking, but one study suggests it could have staggering impacts on the global economy. Basic income pilots gained popularity after the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused record-high unemployment — nearly 15% — in the United States in early 2020. A universal basic income program, or UBI, would provide regular cash payments to everyone. South Africa is on track to be the first country to adopt a universal basic income. "In theory, it is a beautiful idea to use basic income to help people, sustain nature, and boost the economy.

The Ukrainian borderland has long been a place where cultures merge and interchange. Now it is again a place of combat. Through relentless loss, it is being transformed, possibly forever, into a treacherous and abandoned gray zone. What was once a shared way of life, and faith, is dwindling. Getting even daily essentials to the few who remain is a dangerous struggle.

Opinion | MAGA Turns Against the Constitution

You may not know this, but the United States is in the grips of another crisis — perhaps its greatest crisis of all. In addition to confronting a recession, a collapsing stock market, unemployment rates at a 50-year high and skyrocketing crime, the Constitution itself is now essentially dead. The economy is growing, the stock market is at historic highs and the unemployment rate is near a 50-year low. But crime rates have dropped after pandemic-era increases, and overall crime rates are substantially lower than they were in the relatively recent past: Violent crimes and property crimes are occurring at less than half the rates they were in the early 1990s. An overwhelming majority of Americans (77 percent) believe that crime is rising — one of the most pessimistic assessments in a generation.

New York CNN —Champion, the more than century-old sportswear brand, has a new owner. Hanesbrands announced Wednesday that it will sell Champion to Authentic Brands Group in a deal worth up to $1.5 billion with performance incentives. Many consumers have pulled back on discretionary clothing, a trend that has hurt Champion’s rivals such as Nike and Under Armour. Champion had made an exclusive C-9 Champion line for Target for around 15 years, but the contract expired in early 2020 as Target focused more on its own private-label brands. The company then started selling the C-9 line on Amazon.

Oil prices eased in early trade on Tuesday, extending their losses from the previous session when prices fell to their lowest in four months, as investors worried about supply ticking up later in the year. Brent closed below $80 for the first time since Feb. 7, after falling more than 3% on Monday. Signs of weakening demand growth have also weighed on oil prices in recent months, with data on U.S. fuel consumption in focus. German officials estimate there are between 30,000 and 50,000 Ukrainian amputees as a result of the conflict. Now a German non-governmental organization is working to bring wounded Ukrainian soldiers to Berlin so they can be fitted with custom-made artificial limbs and given treatment that will allow them to lead as normal a life as possible. Kushnirov and Sayko-Kazakov are among the first of 60 severely wounded Ukrainian soldiers who will receive treatment in Germany, thanks to the Berlin-based NGO “Life Bridge Ukraine.” They hope to start what they see as a new life soon.
