Daisy Edgar-Jones, the 25-year-old British actress with an increasingly crowded dance card, will soon experience just how complicated Hollywood’s rush to return to work is going to be. Now, with only weeks to finish the film for a planned release next summer, there’s no time to waste. That means Ms. Edgar-Jones will have to walk away from a role in a drama that Ron Howard is set to begin directing soon in Australia. He is set to portray Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” beginning in March. Sitting beneath a palm tree on a cliff above the ocean at Mr. Benioff’s Hawaiian home in 2018, they explained both devices. “This one,” Mr. Benioff said, pointing at the Ai Pin, as dolphins breached the surf below, “is huge.”“It’s going to be a massive company,” he added. They experimented in secret with hardware components and built a virtual assistant, like Siri or Alexa, working with customized language models based, in part, on OpenAI’s offerings. The device’s most sci-fi element — the laser that projects a text menu onto a hand — started inside a box the size of a matchbook. It took three years to miniaturize it to be smaller than the size of a golf tee.

A compilation of scenes of nuclear weapons attacks is made up of excerpts from several movies, and is not, as suggested in online posts, an animation released by the Kremlin depicting nuclear attacks on U.S. cities. Posts on social media said: “The Russian Kremlin just released this animation depicting multiple nuclear strikes on American cities. Does this worry you?” The video shows various nuclear missiles in flight followed by explosions across North American cities. The scene in timestamps 0:17-0:25 of the circulating video shows nuclear weapons launched from the sky toward a city. The social media video is a compilation of explosion scenes from several well-known movies, and there is no evidence it was released by the Kremlin.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming “The Marvels,” has a diagnosis for the recent struggles of superhero movies. It’s the first Marvel movie to feature not just all-female leads but a female villain (Zawe Ashton plays Dar-Benn), as well. While originally conceived as a post-“Endgame” follow-up to “Captain Marvel,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige was drawn to the chance to unite Captain Marvel with Rambeau from “WandaVision” and Ms. Marvel of her standalone Disney+ series. After making “Candyman,” a Marvel movie was, DaCosta says, “definitely not in my near future.” But it also wasn’t entirely off her radar. When DaCosta was tapped to helm “The Marvels,” Feige encouraged her to reach out to other Marvel movie directors for advice.

Elon Musk has announced the introduction of “Grok,” an artificially intelligent chatbot, for some users of X, which the billionaire suggests has a sarcastic sense of humor similar to his own. Grok “loves sarcasm,” Musk posted on X. Grok is intended to rival ChatGPT, an AI chatbot released to the public by its maker OpenAI last November to much fanfare. Musk has previously expressed concerns about the speed of development of AI, and the technology’s potential to fundamentally change human society for the worse.

The semi-retired business owner said he's house hunting for homes that cost half as much as in San Diego. Murfreesboro, a city in the center of the state a one-hour drive from Nashville, may not have all the skyscrapers and tech headquarters of San Diego. The tents and campfires were gone. The sidewalks where people had built makeshift shelters from wood pallets and blue tarps were empty. On Friday, all that was left of “the Zone,” a sprawling homeless camp in downtown Phoenix, were discarded clothes, trash and questions about what comes next. Housing advocates say the operation appears to have removed — at least temporarily — a notorious symbol of the homelessness crisis in American cities. “Overnight, they’re all gone.” He said he often woke to flashing lights of police cars and ambulances responding to fights, shootings, fires and overdoses outside his bedroom window.

An Apparent Cyberattack Hushes the British Library

The British Library in London is normally a place of quiet study, its reading rooms filled with authors, academics and students often surrounded by piles of books from the library’s collection of about 170 million items. The library’s Wi-Fi has also stopped working, and staff members haven’t been allowed to turn on their computers. Its gift shop is open for business, but only for anyone with cash to buy trinkets such as British Library-branded pencils. Library users, many of whom include writers with pressing deadlines, are beginning to be affected. Books are only available if they are stored at the main library location.

Can a $400 Box Keep Your Packages Safe from Porch Pirates?
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Sal Vaglica | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
NEARLY ONE in seven Americans had a package snatched from their house in the first 10 months of 2022, according to a C+R Research report. Now, some homeowners are turning to a new spin on an old classic: adding Wi-Fi smarts to a beefy lockbox. These package receptacles, such as the Eufy SmartDrop S300 and Yale Smart Delivery Box (with keypad), are powered by batteries that last between three and six months depending on how often you get deliveries. Just connect the device to your home network, then choose an access code and, every time you buy online, enter that code as the second line of your address and/or in the “preferred delivery instructions” section. That equips delivery drivers to key the code into your box, pop its lid and leave your package inside, assuming you haven’t bought a 12-foot ladder or a hippopotamus.

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Global Payments (GPN.N) raised its annual profit forecast and beat Wall Street estimates for third-quarter profit on Tuesday, as strong consumer spending drove growth in its merchant-focused business.
