CNN —Shoko Miyata, the captain of Japan’s women’s gymnastics team, has withdrawn from Paris 2024 after allegedly breaking the team’s code of conduct by smoking and drinking alcohol, according to the Japanese Gymnastics Association (JGA). The legal smoking and drinking age in Japan is 20 and the JGA’s code of conduct prohibits gymnasts from doing either during team activities, regardless of age. Nishimura said that one incident of smoking took place “in a private place at a certain location in Tokyo” and a separate incident of drinking took place “in a room in the Athlete Village of the National Training Center.”“She engaged in smoking and drinking due to numerous pressures from the competitive targets that had been set,” Nishimura added. Only five states have passed legislation to make jail phone calls free, according to Prison Legal News. I just assumed that Nashville was part of the great temperate deciduous forests that once covered much of the eastern half of the United States. When I went looking for the once-endangered Tennessee coneflower in 2019, I found them in a rocky glade surrounded by grasslands blooming with wildflowers. And if there are grasslands here now, surely there must have been grasslands here in the past. Today nearly all those Southern prairies — along with nearly all the other types of Southern grassland ecosystems, and nearly all the plants and animals they supported — are gone. In a study published in 2021, a team of scientists including Dr. Estes identified 118 major types of grassland ecosystems in the South.

CNN —A unique plant has become the first species in the United States to be exterminated from the wild by the compounding effects of rising seas, scientists say. The Key Largo tree cactus still exists in parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, but the chances of it re-establishing naturally in the Florida Keys is basically “zero,” Gann said. The plant’s habitat was being swamped by saltwater from storms and high tides worsened by the rising sea. Sea levels around the Florida Keys have been rising by around an average 0.16 inches a year, or just over 8 inches since 1971, the researchers reported. Possley said more than 1-in-4 native plant species are critically threatened with regional extinction in South Florida.

CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

CNN —Six decomposing female bodies were found in a quarry in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Friday, according to police, sparking a protest at a nearby police station. The identities of the dead or how long the bodies had been at the quarry were not immediately clear. “It appears to be a dumping site for bodies and I suspect there could be more,” Hussein Khalid, executive director of human rights group Vocal Africa told CNN. The CNN crew also filmed Kenyan police beating and later arresting some paramedics who were helping injured protesters in Nairobi. The decision was taken “upon reflection, and a holistic appraisal” of his cabinet, he told reporters from State House Nairobi.
