GOTHENBURG, Sweden (AP) — Spain’s World Cup-winning women’s team got back to being soccer players on Friday. That achievement ultimately was tarnished by a sexism scandal sparked by the former Spanish soccer federation president, Luis Rubiales, kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the World Cup awards ceremony. The final whistle blew immediately after the resulting restart and Spain's players celebrated wildly. Putellas was captain for the game in a Spain team containing seven starters from the World Cup final against England. Meanwhile, three national team players have been summoned as witnesses by the judge investigating Rubiales for the kiss.

The team's long-running conflict with their association was exacerbated when former Spanish FA (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales kissed player Jennie Hermoso after the World Cup final in Sydney. The contention of Rubiales, who subsequently resigned, that the kiss was consensual was strongly refuted by Hermoso and the incident is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation in Spain. However, Caldentey's penalty silenced the fans as she snatched victory for the visitors. Very proud of our team and how we delivered this win with heart and grit." With the Nations League doubling as a qualifying tournament for next year's Olympic Games in Paris, Spain meet Switzerland in Cordoba on Tuesday, while Sweden are away to Italy.

Sen. Bob Menendez took bribes of cash, gold, and other luxury items, according to a new indictment. But there's a way more legal way to make money as a senator — just write a best-selling book! AdvertisementAdvertisementBut there's a totally legal way to make extra money — sometimes way more money than the $174,000 salary — as a sitting member of Congress. That would seem to indicate that Menendez's book wasn't exactly a cash cow for him. Perhaps if he had run for president, as many of the top book-sellers in the Senate have, he could've written another book and made more money, the legal way.

Omar Abbosh, chief strategy officer at Accenture, speaks during the annual Cyberweek conference at Tel Aviv University, Israel June 20, 2016. Abbosh, 57, will take over the reins early in 2024 from Bird, 59, whose strategy of selling directly to consumers helped Pearson out of a tumultuous few years during the pandemic. Shares in Pearson were down 5.2% at 838 pence in morning trading in London. Bird sought to sharpen Pearson's focus to selling directly to consumers and away from traditional educational outlets as the pandemic boosted demand for online learning. Pearson would compensate Abbosh for leaving Microsoft, including cash and an award of restricted shares equivalent to a maximum of 50,813 Microsoft shares or about 13 million pounds ($16.06 million) at the current price and foreign exchange rates, it said.

MADRID, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Some of the rebel players from Spain's World Cup-winning women's squad who had threatened to boycott the national team in a push to stamp out sexism at the football federation (RFEF) on Tuesday reported for training under the threat of being sanctioned. Two sources close to players said they were expecting the whole squad to report in view of the threat of sanctions. Asked as she arrived at the hotel whether she was happy to have been selected for the team, Misa Rodriguez replied: "No." Hermoso was not on the squad list announced by new coach Montse Tome on Monday, which included 15 of the 23 cup-winning players. Instead, gasoline prices are getting more expensive and are just pennies away from their highest level so far this year. Are rising oil prices another item to add to the list? How high do you think oil prices will go? When you adjust for inflation, oil isn’t that high right now. I think that we are going to see continued high prices for a lot of stuff, including gasoline, but I don’t think we’re gonna see an acceleration in prices.

But on Monday, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, McDonald’s customers will be able to get a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents, only 45 cents more than what the chain’s original hamburger cost in 1948. According to the company’s official website, a McDonald’s cheeseburger typically can cost as low as $1 and as high as $2.79. And Burger King would likely be forced to abdicate his throne if the monarch did nothing for National Cheeseburger Day. Loyal customers who join the chain’s Royal Perks program will get a free cheeseburger — but only if they spend at least a dollar. In addition to calling for a 36% pay raise and increased job security, union members want a 32-hour, four-day workweek with no pay cuts. Proposals to shorten the workweek have gained traction in recent years, with the flexibility of pandemic-era remote work fueling many of these calls. The accelerating use of artificial intelligence in the workplace has also pushed some workers to question the necessity of a 40-hour week. Sen. Bernie Sanders has long been a vocal proponent of a shortened workweek. “The question as a nation that we have to ask ourselves is: Who is going to benefit from this productivity?

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. Insurance is an option for someLong-term care insurance, a very niche and complex market, has traditionally been an option for those able to buy policies, but it is far from the norm. “The population of seniors who buy long-term care insurance constitutes a segment of the population who are healthier and their longevity is likely different than the nation as a whole,” said Slome. “Our concern is that … it will get even more expensive for those who have had the modest resources to access long-term care insurance to be able to afford it,” she noted.

“Why do we even bother going through this whole dog-and-pony show trying to figure out who else can do this movie? While almost half the actor-director films at Toronto are by women, everyone knows by now the challenges female filmmakers face behind the camera. While some independent films have secured interim agreements if they agree to union demands, this year’s festival has seen few American filmmakers and actors doing promotion. Despite that, “Woman of the Hour” still landed the first major sale of the festival in a reported $11 million deal with Netflix. Considering that the stability of Hollywood itself is in question, it is hard to determine whether directing confers more security than having to hang around waiting for an acting job.

CNN —The economic relationship between the US and China is mutually beneficial and opening lines of communication is key to maintaining it, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday. She is the fourth cabinet member to visit China this year and the first commerce secretary to visit China in five years. China hit back earlier this summer with its own export controls on gallium and germanium, raw materials essential for producing chips. But during her China visit, Raimondo was clear the US does not want to completely decouple from China when it comes to these semiconductors and chips. “We have plenty of tools in our toolbox … export controls, outbound investment screening, tariffs, countervailing duties.

Amgen settles with the FTC over $28 billion deal

In May, the FTC filed a complaint in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois to stop the deal from going ahead, alleging that it was anti-competitive. The lawsuit involved Horizon’s Tepezza, used to treat thyroid eye disease, and Kystexxa, used to treat chronic refractory gout. The FTC’s concern was that, by acquiring these products, Amgen would stifle competition by making it harder for consumers to have access to cheaper medicines if they were developed by competitors. It also needs to gain approval from the FTC before acquiring any other companies that manufacture these types of medicines. The two companies are expected to finalize the merger later this year, according to Amgen.

LONDON, Aug 30 (Reuters) - British motor and home insurer Direct Line Insurance Group (DLGD.L) on Wednesday named Adam Winslow, a senior executive at Aviva (AV.L), as its CEO, seeking to reset after profits fell by 95% in 2022. Winslow, who is currently CEO of UK & Ireland general insurance at FTSE 100-listed Aviva, will join Direct Line in the first quarter of 2024. His appointment comes after Penny James, Direct Line's CEO for nearly four years, stepped down in January and Chief Commercial Officer Jon Greenwood was appointed acting CEO. Direct Line reported in March that its operating profit dropped 95% in 2022 after inflation drove up the cost of motor repairs and it warned that 2023 would be impacted by higher than previously expected claims inflation. Direct Line reports first-half 2023 results on Sept. 7.

New York CNN —As it churns toward the disaster-prone Sunshine State, Hurricane Idalia could be a litmus test for Florida’s increasingly volatile and expensive insurance landscape. Despite several insurance companies exiting Florida, experts say the state’s residents are still mostly covered this hurricane season. “Florida’s property insurance market remains very volatile, but the insurance industry is well-capitalized to pay Idalia claims,” he added. Enrollment in flood insurance has seen a steady uptick every month since October 2022, according to the latest FEMA data. While Florida has the highest flood insurance enrollment rate of any state, Friedlander said only 18% have flood insurance through either federal or private insurers.
