A search is underway for an Arizona woman who was swept away in a flash flood Thursday while hiking at Grand Canyon National Park. The flash flood happened around 1:30 p.m. local time and stranded several hikers in the area. “Rescue efforts began promptly, with an initial flight taking off before 3 p.m. to assist individuals stranded both below and above Beaver Falls,” the National Park Service said. Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. A second former Memphis police officer is expected to change his not guilty plea on Friday in connection to alleged civil rights violations that ended in the beating death of Tyre Nichols, court documents revealed. Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell said Friday he expects the central bank will cut its key interest rate in the near future in response to slower economic growth and cooling inflation. "The labor market is no longer overheated, and conditions are now less tight than those that prevailed before the pandemic. English singer Lily Allen said she adopted a puppy during the Covid-19 pandemic, but returned it after it ate her family's passports. Jones cautioned that getting a dog with her husband, "Stranger Things" star David Harbour, is "a hell of a commitment." Allen said the pup ate her passport as well as those of her two daughters, Ethel, 12, and Marnie, 11, who she shares with her ex-husband Sam Cooper.
