The German share price index DAX graph is pictured at the stock exchange in Frankfurt, Germany, August 1, 2023. Still, investors' focal point for the week is the U.S. consumer price index amid recent goldilocks data and remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell that's given strength to the economic soft-landing narrative. Fed officials continue to emerge from their silence this week after hiking rates another 25 basis points at their last meeting. Investors betting the Fed has reached the end of rate increases will have another chance to gauge their theory when Philadelphia Fed President Harker and Richmond Fed President Barkin speak on Tuesday. Their remarks will be top of investor watchlists after mixed messages about the future rate path from New York Fed President John Williams and Fed Governor Michelle Bowman on Monday.

The Tomohon Extreme Market was once a top tourist attraction in the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi — a live animal market filled with everything from fileted pythons to skewered bats and rats. Activists urged major travel companies to stop recommending the market as a tourism site, said Lola Webber, Humane Society International's director of campaigns. "Bali dealt with this issue by poisoning stray dogs, which ended up being just as bad, if not worse, than those that have been subjected to the dog meat trade." India's 'tail of woes' continues unabated in West Indies

Hardik Pandya's team suffered their second successive defeat in the five-match series against West Indies and the loss also highlighted the lack of batting firepower in their lower order. India's decision to pick specialist bowlers, who can hardly bat, effectively left them with four number 11 batters in both matches. "The West Indies have highlighted one of the issues that India have in white ball cricket. You don't need batters down at 9/10 but they must have the ability to hit boundaries." "We have to find ways to make sure we have the right balance but at the same time batters need to take more responsibility."

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Nicholas Pooran's 67 off 40 balls helped the West Indies clinch a two-wicket victory over India in the second Twenty20 international in Providence on Sunday to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. India, who opted to bat, had Tilak Varma's 51 to thank for taking them past the 150 mark, with captain Hardik Pandya (24) and opener Ishan Kishan (27) also contributing to the total. Three bowlers were instrumental in restricting India to an inadequate 152-7, with Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd taking two wickets apiece. West Indies fumbled early in their innings, but Pooran anchored their chase with a big-hitting knock before being dismissed by Mukesh Kumar. I felt like it was a decent wicket and we are accustomed to get such wickets here.

August 6 - The Boston Red Sox will try to put a bad day behind them and salvage the finale of a three-game series with the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. Neither Red Sox manager Alex Cora nor Verdugo, who never got into the game, commented on the reason. The Red Sox won the first seven meetings with the Blue Jays this season and now have lost two straight to a team they are chasing for an American League wild-card spot. Bassitt has faced the Red Sox once in his career, in 2021, when he allowed two runs and three hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. The Red Sox are expected to start left-hander Brennan Bernardino (1-1, 2.72).

August 6 - The Philadelphia Phillies would like to see this version of $300 million shortstop Trea Turner -- and their suddenly Turner-supporting fans --- on Sunday and for the rest of the season. After a grassroots support campaign for Turner -- roughly organized by Philadelphia radio station WIP -- Phillies fans greeted Turner with a standing ovation before his first at-bat in Friday's series opener. Turner added an RBI double in the eighth to provide an insurance run, drawing another ovation from fans who will see Turner in Philadelphia through 2033 under his 11-year contract. "Roller coaster is obviously the first thing that comes to mind," Turner said after Saturday's win. India entered the three-match series with their eyes on the bigger picture, which includes the Asia Cup and the home World Cup in October-November. It did not really matter at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad where India racked up 351-5 after being put into bat. They then returned to bundle out West Indies for 151 in 35.3 overs with only Alick Athanaze (32) and Gudakesh Motie, who made 39 not out, offering some resistance. After Mukesh Kumar (3-30) wrecked the West Indies top order, Shardul Thakur (4-37) hollowed out the bottom half as India registered their 13th consecutive ODI series win against West Indies. West Indies captain Shai Hope said the target was not beyond their reach but they lacked consistency.

Twitter sues watchdog Center for Countering Digital Hate
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Washington, DC CNN —Twitter has sued the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a nonprofit group that has criticized the company’s handling of hate speech, following through on a litigation threat that had been publicly revealed just hours before. The lawsuit filed Monday in San Francisco federal court accuses CCDH of deliberately trying to drive advertisers away from Twitter — recently rebranded as “X” — by publishing reports critical of the platform’s response to hateful content. It specifically claims CCDH violated Twitter’s terms of service, and federal hacking laws, by scraping data from the company’s platform and by encouraging an unnamed individual to improperly collect information about Twitter that it had provided to a third-party brand monitoring provider. The complaint accuses CCDH of engaging in a wide-ranging campaign to silence users of Twitter’s platform by calling attention to the views they post on social media. But Monday’s complaint does not appear to include such an allegation.

LePage never made it past Class A in the minor leagues, but a few guys in the majors still remember him fondly. “He could foul the ball straight back during batting practice on command,” Ahmed said. “Just a different level of bat control.”Like many college standouts, LePage could not find his footing in pro ball. Over the last decade, as teams have chased exit velocity and the long ball, the value of such high-contact, low-impact hitters has tanked.

For a whole lot of people, the latter best describes how they are feeling about Twitter, the live social conversation app. Having overseen — devised, really — the demise of Twitter, Musk has also created a reasonable chance that he could now be in charge of a complete brand blowout, should this daring reboot eventuate in extinction for X. The app formerly known as “Twitter” had almost 370 million users globally in December of last year, after Musk paid (overpaid) $44 billion to buy it. Less than a year later, it is already down to 353 million users, and Statista projects the number will decline to 335 million in 2024. Threads reached 100 million users in five days, which was surely the biggest case in history of rustling wandering strays from the herd.

It showed that such an RBD had evolved in the wild and might well have gotten into SARS-CoV-2 by recombination, the natural gene-swapping process. The genome was 96.2 percent identical to the SARS-CoV-2 genome as sampled from people during the early days of the pandemic. RaTG13 has attained renown, not just because it constituted strong evidence of SARS-CoV-2’s ancestry in bat viruses but also because the Mojiang mine figures in some of the more lurid scenarios for a lab-leak origin. The inference is that Shi’s team, a year after the mine workers died, may have taken the virus back to Wuhan.

A journalist breaks down the prompts he uses to identify errors Google Bard introduces. They include telling the bot to list the facts it relied on or to explain its thinking step-by-step. No matter how specific your prompts are, it will occasionally cite made-up sources and introduce outright errors. By using a few carefully honed prompts, I can identify and deal with any inaccuracies at a glance. Sure, I still need to manually verify whatever Bard spits out, but these four prompts help me fact-check quickly, saving me time by making the artificial intelligence do the heavy lifting.

CNBC's Jim Cramer preached a straightforward message on Monday: Keep it simple, stupid. Cramer urged investors to bide their time and wait for a swoon in a company's price before buying. Cramer also highlighted beverage and food giant PepsiCo , along with travel and leisure front-runners, Boeing and American Express . "I think this is a matter of keeping it simple, stupid," Cramer said. But if a company is not overbought, Cramer urged investors to wait for a swoon after a company's earnings report, or a market-wide dip.

The X logo is pretty nice. Mourn the blue bird for now, but get used to the new X. I know we miss the blue bird, but come on, the new X logo isn't that bad. Lots of people were nervous that the demise of the bird logo and its renaming to "X" would come with another ugly or incomprehensible logo. Goodbye, Twitter bird.
