Orchid, a startup that tests embryos for genetic diseases, has just raised $12 million. "The way that IVF and embryo screening works today is the amount of information available is really limited," Orchid CEO and cofounder Noor Siddiqui said. Genetic testing has been around for years, but it has been usually limited in the diseases it can identify, which include cystic fibrosis, Bloomberg reported. Orchid produces reports with two types of genetic testing: monogenic and polygenic. The cost of the test depends on the number of embryos that Orchid tests.

Walmart and Target appear to be borrowing pages from each other's playbook. Some specific features seemingly borrowed from Target include the new "Dollar Shop" and "Grab & Go" sections near the front entrance. AdvertisementFresh produce sections at Walmart (left) and Target (right). For starters, Walmart is still much bigger than Target, and a supercenter is typically about 50% larger than a Target store. But the company says it is finding success in its effort to attract higher-income shoppers, while Target continues to emphasize affordability in its offerings.

To be sure, China is still Walmart's biggest country for importing goods. "We want the best prices," Andrea Albright, Walmart's executive vice president of sourcing said in an interview. Walmart has been accelerating growth in India since 2018, when it bought a 77% stake in Indian e-commerce firm Flipkart. Its rapidly growing workforce and technological advancement were a draw for Walmart, Albright said. The rising cost of shipping goods from China has also contributed to the switch to India, supply chain experts say.

Retailers and tech firms are developing new ways to detect — and prevent — theft. Companies like Walmart and Kroger are using cameras, AI sensors, and other tech at self-checkouts. These days, companies like Walmart, Kroger, and more are outfitting their self-checkouts with cameras, AI-enabled sensors, and other high-tech tools to tamp down theft at self-checkout stations. They previously said, "As with other retailers, theft is always a challenge, and we're always looking for better ways to tackle this issue. The presence of a person is one of several low-tech ways retailers have managed to curb shoplifting at self-checkout lanes.
