VC firm Fearless Fund is being sued by the group behind the Supreme Court affirmative action case. The conservative group claims a grant program run by Fearless Fund is racially discriminatory. It also led some companies like Bank of America, Mastercard , PayPal and others to earmark millions of dollars to fund and address the racial funding gap. A small, Atlanta-based, Black women-led venture firm called Fearless Fund was one of them. "Their motive is clear: they want to disrupt the vital work of Fearless Fund and similar institutions and organizations whose primary mission is to provide underrepresented communities with an economic engine to build, sustain and scale their businesses," said Fearless Fund in a press release.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas poses during a group portrait at the Supreme Court in Washington, U.S., October 7, 2022. REUTERS/Evelyn Hockstein/File PhotoAug 10 (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has been treated to far more luxury vacations and exclusive perks from wealthy patrons than previously known, news organization ProPublica reported on Thursday, raising more questions about the lack of binding ethical standards at the court. At least twice, the late billionaire businessman Wayne Huizenga sent his personal 737 jet to pick Thomas up and bring him to South Florida, ProPublica reported. Unlike other members of the federal judiciary, the life-tenured justices have no binding ethics code of conduct, though they are subject to certain financial disclosure laws. At an event in May, Roberts said the court is considering steps to "adhere to the highest standards of conduct."

"Collectively, available evidence does not suggest that EG.5 has additional public health risks relative to the other currently circulating Omicron descendent lineages," the WHO said in a risk evaluation. COVID-19 has killed more than 6.9 million people globally, with more than 768 million confirmed cases since the virus emerged. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on COVID-19, said EG.5 had an increased transmissibility but was not more severe than other Omicron variants. Affirmative action supporters and counterprotesters shout at each other outside the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., June 29, 2023. Now that the Supreme Court has struck down race-conscious admissions, employers could face challenges in how they find diverse talent. A group of 13 Republican attorneys general suggested in the wake of the ruling that companies' diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, programs could be considered unlawful discrimination. In the wake of the ruling, many fear universities could become less reliable sources from which to recruit diverse talent. However, during the last year there has been a "step back" in terms of diversity hiring, said Reyhan Ayas, a senior economist at Revelio Labs, a workforce data and analytics firm.

LISBON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - More than 1,100 firefighters and 14 water-carrying aircraft battled a wildfire in central Portugal's Castelo Branco area on Saturday as civil protection authorities said hot, windy conditions meant it could take days to put out. Smoke from the blaze, which has destroyed some 60 square km (23 square miles) of forest and undergrowth, reached the Fatima Sanctuary about 100 km (60 miles) away where hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered to see Pope Francis on Saturday. The Portuguese state weather agency forecast temperatures to reach 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) on Sunday in Castelo Branco, up from 38C on Saturday. August is usually the hottest month of the year in Portugal. Reporting by Andrei Khalip Editing by Helen PopperOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

CNN —For a group of roughly two dozen displaced Afghan university students, the future feels uncertain. More than 100 displaced Afghan students – 80 of whom were in Iraq – have already come to the US, where they are studying at more than 45 universities, according to sources familiar with the situation. The students told CNN they don’t have any clear sense of when they will get approval to come to the US, and they are worried about what the continued delay means for their future. “We Afghans lost almost everything, and this scholarship in the US is a very big opportunity for us,” a third student told CNN. A US State Department spokesperson said they are “aware of the Afghan students at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani,” but could not comment on individual cases.

When I wrote my college-admissions essay, I took a risk and wrote: "I want to be like Barbie." I thought about what I liked; I liked film. Barbie chose all of her dreams, and through pursuing film as a career, I could too. With help from Barbie, I consistently chose it all, and through film, I could bring my ballerina-astronaut dreams to life. Now, two years later, I'm entering my sophomore year of studying film and television production at Chapman University, one of the world's top film schools.

Students for Fair Admissions, fresh off its Supreme Court victory gutting affirmative action in college admissions, is preparing for another potential lawsuit. The group is soliciting possible plaintiffs — applicants rejected from the U.S. Military Academy, known as West Point; the Naval Academy; and the Air Force Academy — for an effort to challenge race-conscious admissions at the three major American service academies, which are responsible for educating and training many of the country’s future military leaders. “Were you rejected from West Point?” asks a new webpage, WestPointNotFair.org, set up on Thursday and apparently aimed at white and Asian applicants. “It may be because you’re the wrong race.” It goes on to urge, “Tell us your story,” and provides a form requesting detailed contact information. Affirmative action at U.S. military academies was not addressed by the Supreme Court ruling in June, because Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, in a footnote, that they had “potentially distinct interests.”

But I’ve no idea where those students will be 10 or 20 years down the road. And perhaps the greatest tragedy of all the drama around college admissions is the degree to which it obscures that transcendent truth. They’re honing the best kind of opportunism. They’re honing the worst kind of wastefulness. Where, in all the chatter about the Ivy League and all the debate about meritocracy, is the necessary attention to that?

LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - The economic picture may not have to change much for the surprise element to disappear for markets - underlining the significance of this summer's sometimes grudging admissions of investment strategy missteps. SURPRISE, SURPRISEExceptional U.S. economic surprisesU.S. surprise gaps the widest in decades, excluding pandemicAlong with market moves themselves and skewed positioning monitors, the simplest take on the unpreparedness of investors can be seen in economic surprise indices. The global surprise index is close to zero, suggesting expectations for the world economy in aggregate are actually coming in on cue. And if that happens, it may just suck the oxygen from the stellar equity outperformance over bonds to date. If true, markets may find the going harder without that element of surprise.

In the end, the group of Harvard and Brown University-based economists found that attending an Ivy League college has a "statistically insignificant impact" on earnings. Leadership positions are disproportionately held by graduates of a few highly selective private colleges, the Opportunity Insights report found. Meanwhile, at the nation's top schools, including many in the Ivy League, acceptance rates hover near all-time lows. The pathway to CEO is not necessarily an elite university. So far New York City has seen seven waves of Covid-19, with four occurring since the Omicron variant first appeared at the end of 2021. Dr. Nash estimates that more than 20 percent of New Yorkers have now had Covid-19 three or more times, a group that now includes him. New York City’s vast testing apparatus has largely closed, and many people don’t bother with at-home tests anymore. In New York City, the daily average count of new cases stood at only 363, as of July 24. “As we once again see an increase in cases of Covid-19 in the state, I urge all New Yorkers to remember Covid is a treatable disease,” Dr. McDonald said, urging people to consider seeking antivirals such as Paxlovid, if infected.

U.S. colleges are set to release their essay prompts on Tuesday when the common application used by many schools becomes public for the upcoming admissions cycle. Many high school counselors are uncertain how students should handle questions of race and identity in their essays, Perez said. They also are wary that if they mention race in student recommendations, they will be inviting scrutiny or violating the court's order. "The general feeling with school counselors right now is mostly anxiety," Perez said. Private admissions counselors have already started working with students of color on essays that discuss their cultural heritage.
