[1/2] Artificial Intelligence words are seen in this illustration taken March 31, 2023. Companies are increasingly using AI to make decisions including about pricing, which could lead to discriminatory outcomes, experts warned at the conference. “We should not underestimate how powerful these models are now and how rapidly they are going to get more powerful,” he said. Developing ever-more powerful AI will also risk eliminating jobs to a point where it may be impossible for humans to simply learn new skills and enter other industries. “Once that happens, I fear that it's not going to be so easy to go back to AI being a tool and AI as something that empowers people.

Gloom over worse-than-expected export data offset any positive momentum from an upgrade to China's growth forecast by the International Monetary Fund. It raised its GDP growth forecast for 2023 to 5.4% from 5% but forecast that growth will slow next year. Earlier in the summer, a swift rise in Treasury yields sent the stock market reeling. High rates and yields hurt stock prices, slow the economy and raise the pressure on the entire financial system. In currency trading, the U.S. dollar edged up to 150.69 Japanese yen from 150.37 yen.

CNN —Abortion rights are on the ballot Tuesday as Americans head to the polls for state and local races that will set the stage for next year’s presidential election. (Both oppose abortion rights.) Abortion (literally) on the ballot in OhioThe 2022 midterm elections showed that when abortion rights are on the ballot, voters overwhelmingly favored protecting or expanding access. This is the only abortion rights ballot initiative before voters this year. Though not explicitly on the ballot, abortion has featured prominently in the campaign, with Beshear arguing that Cameron will double down on the commonwealth’s already harsh restrictions.

A recent jury verdict against the National Association of Realtors and large residential brokerages could upend the residential real estate industry. Here's what real estate agents, homebuyers and sellers need to know about potential changes in residential real estate economics. A bad time for bad news in real estateThe jury verdict comes at a time when many real estate agents are already feeling a pinch. At a time when home sales are already under pressure, "this lawsuit is just another punch in the gut for real estate franchises," said Bill Gross, a self-employed real estate broker associate in California with eXp Realty. NEW YORK, Nov 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Elon Musk does well when his back is against the wall. His investment in X now fills the longshot role, which leaves him little to lose. Grok, as it is called, has “real-time access to info via the X platform,” Musk noted in a post, which gives it a “massive advantage” over other AI models. Although the product is still being tested, Musk says it already can out-compute OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and Meta Platforms' (META.O) Llama 2. NEW YORK (AP) — WeWork has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a stunning fall for the office sharing company once seen as a Wall Street darling that promised to upend the way people went to work around the world. The company offered few specifics about the course of its restructuring, but noted in its filing that it was requesting the ability to cancel leases in particular locations that WeWork described as largely non-operational. All affected members have received advanced notice, the company said in a late Monday announcement.

With the U.S. projected to borrow $2 trillion yearly for the next decade, the Treasury Department will need to sell a lot more bonds to make up for the deficit. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin explains what it means for the stock market. Photo illustration: Noah FriedmanIn times of war and conflict, investors have long piled into Treasury bonds and other safe-haven assets, bringing interest rates down. But in today’s disintegrating geopolitical environment, where hot spots around the world threaten to upend the supply of key commodities, it’s becoming harder for investors to book their flights to safety. That helps explain why bond yields have risen recently—and may stay high.

He said that "voice cloning" is the one thing that keeps him up at night, Politico reported. "Voice cloning is one thing that keeps me up at night," White House Deputy Chief of Staff Bruce Reed told Politico. Phone scammers, for example, have already been exploiting advancements in voice cloning technology to make their schemes more believable. In April, one mother in Arizona received a call from a scammer who had used voice cloning software to pretend he had kidnapped her daughter. While we see our tech being overwhelmingly applied to positive use, we also see an increasing number of voice cloning misuse cases.

But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

But his testimony was overshadowed by a testy back-and-forth between Justice Arthur F. Engoron and one the Trump lawyers over the judge’s law clerk, Allison Greenfield. The lawyer, Christopher M. Kise, repeatedly objected to the clerk communicating with the judge through notes and suggested she has a bias. In his testimony Friday, Eric Trump consistently batted away questions about what he knew of the Trump Organization’s financial statements, claiming he did not know the granular details. During hours on the stand on Thursday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, Eric Trump and his older brother, Donald Trump Jr., had blamed outside accountants for errors in company financial statements. The documents are at the heart of the civil case, which accuses the brothers, their father and the family’s Trump Organization of defrauding banks and insurers.

Ivanka Trump asked a New York appeals court to pause the $250 million fraud trial of her family and its business empire as she appeals a judge's order requiring her to testify in the case next week. New York Attorney General Letitia James urged the appeals court to reject that request, calling it a "drastic" and baseless move that "would upend an ongoing trial." Ivanka Trump was originally listed as a co-defendant as well, but she was removed earlier this year on statute of limitations grounds by a New York appeals court earlier. In Thursday's filing to the appeals court, Ivanka's attorney argued that she is "beyond the jurisdiction" of Engoron's court and that the judge made "multiple errors" when he declined to quash subpoenas for her testimony. Ivanka Trump "has firsthand knowledge of issues that are central to the ongoing trial," James wrote.

The National Association of Realtors announced Thursday that CEO Bob Goldberg will resign earlier than expected, as the group contends with the fallout from a federal lawsuit and a harassment scandal. The leadership transition comes days after a federal jury found the association — and some residential brokerages, including units of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway — liable for conspiring to artificially inflate commissions from home sales. The association did not mention the lawsuit in Goldberg's decision to step down. Starting Nov. 30, Goldberg will be replaced by Nykia Wright, who's serving as interim CEO while the association searches for a permanent replacement. Goldberg will continue to serve as an executive consultant through the transition, the association added.

Ueda's intentions are based on interviews with six sources familiar with the BOJ's thinking, including government officials with direct interaction with the bank. "Given uncertainty over the economic outlook, the BOJ probably wants to wait at least until spring next year in normalising policy," said another source. If the yen continues to fall, that could heighten political pressure on the BOJ to exit sooner than it wants, some analysts say. The risk of sharp yen falls and an inflation overshoot may leave the BOJ with less time than it wants to exit. "The BOJ doesn't have much time left, a point governor Ueda is probably mindful of."

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A series of court challenges are seeking to upend longstanding real estate industry practices that determine the commissions agents receive on the sale of a home — and who foots the bill. But already the NAR and several real estate brokerages are facing another lawsuit over agent commission rules. As home prices have soared in recent years, pushing the national median sales price to $394,300 as of September, so have agents’ commissions. Traditionally, that works out to a 5% to 6% commission split roughly evenly between the buyer’s and seller’s agents. “The real solution is for buyers to be able to finance the buyer-agent commissions as part of their mortgages.

The verdict could upend decades-old practices that have allowed real estate agents to boost commissions by forcing sellers to pay commissions to buyers' real estate brokers. Representatives of Compass and Douglas Elliman declined to comment. BTIG analyst Soham Bhonsle in an investor note said the fact that Douglas Elliman, Redfin, Compass and eXp were being sued by the same lawyers was a negative for their stocks. Zillow (ZG.O) shares initially fell 0.33% after brokerage Jefferies cut its price target, citing the impact of Tuesday's verdict. While Zillow is not a defendant in either lawsuit, Jefferies said Tuesday's verdict "increases the chances of a ban on commission sharing and Zillow having to pivot the business model."

The verdict by a federal jury in Kansas City, Missouri, could upend decades-old practices that have allowed real estate agents to boost commissions as home prices and mortgage rates rise, hurting consumers by making housing transactions more expensive. Plaintiffs in the class action included sellers of more than 260,000 homes in Missouri, Kansas and Illinois between 2015 and 2022, who objected to the commissions they were obligated to pay buyers' brokers. The verdict followed a two-week trial, and the damages award can be tripled under U.S. antitrust law to more than $5.3 billion. Shares of real estate brokerages not involved in the verdict closed lower. Re/Max fell 4.4% and Anywhere fell 2.7%, while online brokers Zillow Group (ZG.O) and Redfin (RDFN.O) declined 6.9% and 5.7%, respectively.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —South Korea’s Constitutional Court has upheld a law banning same-sex relations in the military, citing a threat to combat-readiness, in a judgment decried by the local LGBTQ community as a disappointing setback. “Even if sexual acts are consensual” they risk “causing serious harm to preserving the fighting power of the nation’s armed forces, if committed (while on duty),” it added. But the group said it was encouraged by the comments of the dissenting judges, who warned against deeming sexual acts between same-sex couples as abnormal. The dissenting judges said there is “no reason” to differentiate between consensual sexual acts by same-sex soldiers and heterosexual ones. With a mandatory military service imposed on almost all able-bodied men between the age of 18 and 28, South Korea has one of the world’s largest active armies.

(CNN) – Fulton County prosecutors have discussed potential plea deals with at least six additional co-defendants charged alongside Donald Trump for attempting to subvert the 2020 presidential election, multiple sources tell CNN. Pro-Trump lawyer Robert Cheeley is among those who have been offered a plea deal in the Georgia case but, according to his lawyer, turned it down. A source with knowledge of the Fulton County DA’s strategy tells CNN that it would be open to discussing plea deals with anyone, but there is little room for compromise when it comes to the charges against Trump. To be clear, there is no indication that prosecutors or Trump’s legal team are interested in discussing a plea deal. John Eastman, who is also considered one of Trump’s most high-profile co-defendants, has not been offered a plea deal either, his lawyer told CNN.
