CNN —We tracked how long each candidate talked at the second Republican primary presidential debate. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy led with over 12 minutes of speaking time during the debate, which saw candidates scrambling for airtime and talking over each other as they jockeyed for opportunities to distinguish themselves. Doug Burgum of North Dakota had the least amount of time to get his message out, speaking just under eight minutes. In the post-debate polling, Mr. Trump gained more support than any of the candidates who did appear on the stage. Since then, as his legal cases play out in the courts, Mr. Trump has grown more extreme, and violent, in his rhetoric. It remains to be seen whether the second debate will persuade top donors still on the sidelines to consolidate behind an alternative to Mr. Trump. Rather than attending the debate, Mr. Trump will appear with union workers in Detroit. A bad night, or just an invisible night, for Mr. Scott would dim hopes of a resurgence.

The second debate of the Republican presidential primary is on Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time. The debate, sanctioned by the Republican National Committee and hosted by Fox Business Network, will take place at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.Where can I watch it? Fox Business Network will broadcast the debate. The debate will be broadcast simultaneously on Fox News, with programming starting at 8:30 p.m. Fox Nation, the channel’s streaming network, will carry it as well. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas failed to meet the increased requirements for the second debate, which demanded 50,000 individual donors (up from 40,000) and 3 percent in a minimum of two national polls accepted by the R.N.C.

If opinion polls are to be believed, Donald Trump has the 2024 Republican presidential nomination in the bag. But in a recent Times Opinion focus group with 13 Republican voters who are looking at candidates other than Mr. Trump, the idea that the race was all but over sounded off base, either because they don’t know any other Republicans who want Mr. Trump back in office or because he seems beatable for the nomination. “My Republican friends say they are for anybody but Trump,” said one focus group participant, Carrie, a 55-year-old from Michigan. In the end, we wanted to know, if the race came down in 2024 to Mr. Trump and President Biden, would they give in and vote for Mr. Trump? It was the most painful question for some of them — and yielded bad news for Mr. Trump but no silver lining for Mr. Biden, either.

CNN —The 2024 GOP presidential debate stage is shrinking after the Republican National Committee announced late Monday that seven candidates are set to participate in the second debate – down one from their first clash. Nikki Haley, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Former President Donald Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination, is skipping the event. The theatrically combative presidential candidacy of Vivek Ramaswamy seems to be premised on two messages.
