It disappeared from her sight for a few minutes, and she started walking home before spotting the helicopter flying back. She said the helicopter had passed over trees and another taller building before hitting the roof of the hotel. In a statement to CNN, DoubleTree by Hilton Cairns said all of its guests – 421 adults and 50 children, plus two staff – were safely evacuated. The bureau asked witnesses with any photos or videos of the helicopter to contact authorities through its website.

A charity working with homeless people in Auckland, New Zealand unknowingly distributed candies filled with potentially lethal doses of methamphetamine in its food parcels after the sweets were donated by a member of the public. The City Missioner, Helen Robinson, said eight families, including at least one child, had reported consuming the contaminated candies since Tuesday. Auckland City Mission was alerted Tuesday by a food bank client who reported “funny-tasting” candy. It was not clear how many had been distributed in that time and how many were made of methamphetamine. Some of those who had received the food parcels were clients of the charity’s addiction service and the news that drugs had been distributed had provoked distress.

The Tanzanian police said on Tuesday they had arrested more than 500 people, including top opposition leaders, as they planned to attend a youth rally, a stunning development in the East African nation where a pathbreaking female president had once promised to restore political freedoms. Some 520 people were arrested across the country ahead of a Monday rally in the southwestern city of Mbeya, Awadh J. Haji, the police commissioner for operations and training, said in a statement. The police, he said, also seized 25 vehicles that had been transporting people going to the rally and officials from different regions in the country. The rally was organized by the opposition Chadema party, which said it wanted to mark International Youth Day. “Their goal is not to celebrate International Youth Day, but to initiate and commit violence to cause disruption of peace in the country,” Mr. Haji said.

Seven people ages 20 to 51 were charged with criminal damage and violent disorder, the police said in a statement. One man, age 22, was also charged with assault. The Crown Prosecution Service, the public prosecutor for England and Wales, said it would argue in a court hearing on Tuesday “that these offenses have a terrorist connection.”The seven individuals are accused of taking part in a raid in the early hours of Aug. 6 that targeted Elbit, an Israeli defense firm whose British subsidiaries employ around 700 people across 16 sites.
