Santos believes, however, that with some diligent and intentional practice, you can start to turn up your thermostat of happiness. “Every available study of happy people suggests that happy people are more social,” Santos said. And I would gather the opposite is also true: Social people are happier. 6 Podcasts About the Joys and Terrors of Air Travel
  + stars: | 2024-05-25 | by ( Emma Dibdin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
It’s a nerve-racking time to be a frequent flier in the United States. Despite this, air travel statistically remains the safest form of mass transit in the United States, and it’s worth keeping the risks in perspective. Some of these podcasts do just that by exploring the true stories of air disasters (and why they are so rare), while others are love letters to life in the skies, hosted by proud aviation geeks who have travel tips, airport reviews and nostalgic industry history to share. Billed as “a true crime podcast in the air,” this series ended production last summer but has a back catalog of 150 episodes, each focusing on a different air disaster in meticulous detail. Both hosts are also regular air travelers, and they share packing tips, review specific aircrafts and airlines and reflect on how travel has changed throughout these recent, turbulent years.

Trump’s Pattern of Sowing Election Doubt Intensifies in 2024Former President Donald J. Trump has baselessly and publicly cast doubt about the fairness of the 2024 election about once a day, on average, since he announced his candidacy for president, according to an analysis by The New York Times. A line chart shows the number of times Donald J. Trump cast doubt on the fairness or integrity of the election during the 2016, 2020, and 2024 election cycles. Mr. Trump first raised questions about the 2016 election in August of that year, about 100 days before the election. About six weeks before Election Day in 2020, Mr. Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. “We want to make sure that the election is honest, and I’m not sure that it can be,” Mr. Trump said.

CNN —As Supreme Court justices try to resolve more than a dozen major cases over the next month, including whether Donald Trump must stand trial for election subversion, they appear mired in antagonism and distrust. Conservatives, who indeed hold the upper hand on the 6-3 court, nonetheless spike their writing and remarks with derision for the left. When the court majority allowed Louisiana state officials to use a map with a second majority-Black congressional district (over the protest of a GOP-backed group of White voters), the three liberals dissented. (A lower US court had referred to it as the “bleaching of African American voters” from the district.) Dissenting liberals emphasized that the decision reversing the lower court undercut a 2017 Supreme Court ruling, Cooper v. Harris, issued before the far-right majority took hold.

Opinion | Why Biden Is Behind in the Polls

To the Editor:Re “Seven Theories for Why Biden Is Losing (and What He Should Do About It),” by Ezra Klein (column, nytimes.com, May 19):President Biden,Your campaign is failing, as spelled out plainly by Mr. Klein, and your chances of winning seem increasingly out of reach. For a long time now polling has consistently shown low approval ratings, the preferences of most voters that you not run again and qualms about your age, but you decided to run anyway. You insisted that you were the best candidate to beat Donald Trump and that you must do so for the good of the country. Most voters don’t want Mr. Trump or you to run again. Democrats can bolster their chances of winning by running a different candidate, a candidate with fresh energy and perspective who could stir passions and motivate people to vote — none of which you’ve demonstrated an ability to do effectively.

CNN —The situation at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TNT network “sucks, plain and simple,” Charles Barkley bluntly said Thursday. Barkley, who said he feels “so bad for the people” he works with, laid blame at the feet of the “clowns” atop WBD. Wall Street has responded quite negatively to the possibility WBD, which has built a programming slate around the NBA, could lose the rights to air the games. And TNT has built a programming slate around the NBA games, most notably the highly rated “Inside the NBA” show. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of Britain on Wednesday called a snap general election for July 4, throwing the fate of his embattled Conservative Party to a restless British public that appears eager for change after 14 years of Conservative government. But the Tories have discarded four prime ministers in eight years, lurching through the serial chaos of Brexit, the coronavirus pandemic and a cost-of-living crisis. With the opposition Labour Party ahead in most polls by double digits for the last 18 months, a Conservative defeat has come to assume an air of inevitability. “Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future,” Mr. Sunak said as pelting rain drenched his suit jacket. The choice for voters, he said, was to “build on the future you’ve made or risk going back to square one.”

Back in September, Scarlett Johansson, who played the hauntingly complex AI assistant in the 2013 Spike Jonze film “Her,” got a request from OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman. He wanted to hire Johansson to voice his company’s newest ChatGPT model, “Sky.” She said no. Johansson quickly lawyered up, saying Monday she was “shocked, angered and in disbelief” that Altman would use a voice “so eerily similar” to her own. OpenAI was forced to confront some of those concerns late last week, after two prominent employees left the company. “Being friends with AI will be so much easier than forging bonds with human beings,” wrote Wired editor Brian Barrett in a recent essay about the movie.

If I’d pictured Donald Trump’s first criminal trial a few years ago, I’d have imagined the biggest, splashiest story in the world. In a recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll, only 16 percent of respondents said they were following the trial very closely, with an additional 32 percent following it “somewhat” closely. When people were asked how the trial made them feel, the most common response was “bored.” TV ratings tell a similar story. “Network coverage of Donald Trump’s hush money trial has failed to produce blockbuster viewership,” Deadline reported at the end of April. I’m aware of no similar effort to dramatize this trial’s testimony, and I almost never hear ordinary people talking about it.

Coming from Tamara Rojo, three words go a long way: “That, I believe.”Rojo, the artistic director of San Francisco Ballet since 2022, wants dancers to have autonomy — more than just input, a real choice in how to interpret a role. There’s a difference between watching dancers ripple through steps, however beautifully, and watching their ideas about a role unfold in real time. Why BORG drinks are dangerous for you
  + stars: | 2024-05-20 | by ( Terry Ward | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —If you’ve been to a party lately and haven’t seen someone drinking a BORG, you’re likely not partying with college students. As the drink’s name suggests, “it’s intended to get you extremely drunk.”What Lembke calls the BORG’s “social contagion factor” makes it even more dangerous. BORG posts starring gallon jugs with punny names such as Captain Borgan, Our Borg and Savior, Borgan Donor and Borgan Wallen proliferate on TikTok. Thinking along those lines is part of what makes BORGs potentially dangerous to the people turning to them as a party drink, Lembke said. The fact that BORGS are usually sweetened with a diluting agent such as electrolyte drinks or water flavor enhancers only makes them more dangerous, she said.

Korean Fried Chicken to Save Your Sunday

That’s often the way of the world: 20-minute jobs that can run to an hour if you’re not careful, two if you’re reckless. So here’s a dinner for anyone who’s wrestled the weekend and brought it only to a draw: Korean fried chicken (above). Julia Moskin adapted the recipe from one developed by the food writer Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee, using either boneless chicken thighs or bone-in wings. Taste the sauce for the glaze as you make it — some will want a little less ketchup, or a little more gochujang. Serve with sheet-pan japchae and beer you’ve stored in the freezer while you’re cooking the chicken, so cold that it has flecks of ice in it.
