Iranians will head to the polls in a special election to choose the successor to former President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May. The election comes at a critical moment for Iran’s leadership. The economy has been weakened by years of sanctions, and under Mr. Raisi’s ultra-conservative leadership, personal freedoms and expressions of dissent have been increasingly quashed. It may be a challenge, after years of voter boycotts and apathy, and judging from a small sample of interviews in recent days. Conversations with more than a dozen government workers, students, businesspeople and other ordinary men and women revealed a degree of weariness, even skepticism, despite the risks of speaking freely in Iran.

Alex Jones does not, for now, have to turn over the Infowars bank accounts to the Sandy Hook families he owes millions, a bankruptcy judge ruled on Thursday. The ruling by Judge Christopher Lopez is the latest turn in an increasingly acrimonious battle between two groups of Sandy Hook families fighting to be paid defamation damages from Mr. Jones. “Let’s just do this with process and transparency,” Judge Lopez said in the hearing, held in Houston. The families of eight victims who sued Mr. Jones in Connecticut had filed an emergency motion asking Judge Lopez to block a court’s ruling last week granting Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, who sued Mr. Jones in Texas, the right to seize Mr. Jones’s business bank accounts, which contain roughly $2 million. Mr. Heslin and Ms. Lewis are the parents of Jesse Lewis, 6, who died at Sandy Hook.

The Vanishing Islands That Failed to Vanish Low-lying tropical island nations were expected to be early victims of rising seas. They found that over the past few decades, the islands’ edges had wobbled this way and that, eroding here, building there. No, to understand what really beguiles them about these islands, you need to take a dive into the surrounding sea. Russia's energy trade likely boomed last month despite sanctions. That's a 50% increase from the prior year, a sign Moscow's energy trade is getting on despite restrictions. According to Reuters, Russia's oil and gas revenue is set to surge to $9.4 billion in June, up roughly 50% from the $6 billion it took in from oil and gas sales in June of last year. The increase in revenue has largely been spurred by declining subsidies to Russia's oil refineries, which fell $60 billion from last month. That may encourage refineries to export oil and gas overseas for a higher price, as opposed to keeping oil and gas for domestic sales.

Neil Hennessy said investors need to look at value stocks that offer attractive price-to-sales multiples and avoid what he sees as a dying "Magnificent Seven" trade. While Hennessy admitted that the Magnificent 7 stocks have performed well, he said their average price-to-earnings multiple sits at around 47 while their price-to-sales multiple is above 12. "The reality of our world is money is shifting over to value," said the University of San Diego alum. But Hennessy said the stock is attractively priced, with a price-to-sales multiple of 0.9 and P/E ratio of just 7. But the average price target implies the stock can turn around and surge more than 27% over the coming year.

The shooting occurred at 1:46 p.m. that day at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a family-owned Old West movie set about 20 miles southeast of Santa Fe that had been rented out by “Rust,” an independent film that Baldwin was both starring in and producing. The bullet he inadvertently fired passed through the upper body of the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and lodged near the spine of Joel Souza, the director. Souza was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Santa Fe; Hutchins was airlifted to a trauma center in Albuquerque and died a short time later. She had been an assistant district attorney specializing in violent crimes when her boss made a bid for Congress. She ran to succeed him — her first foray into electoral politics — and won easily, inheriting a jurisdiction that covers three counties: Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe.

Beneath the pit, some 370 miles of tunnels twist through solid rock, extending more than 1.5 miles below the surface. For 126 years, this site in Lead, S.D., housed the Homestake Mine, the deepest and most productive gold mine on the continent. In 2006, the Barrick Gold Corporation donated the mine to the state of South Dakota, which converted it into the largest subterranean laboratory in the United States, the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Although the lowest tunnels flooded after mining ceased, it is still possible to descend nearly a mile beneath the planet’s surface. Most of the scientists who do so are physicists conducting highly sensitive experiments that must be shielded from interfering cosmic rays.

The latest batch of US sanctions against Russia will promote further use of the yuan, a think tank said. It argued that as ruble volatility increases, the Chinese currency will offer stability. While sanctions also threaten Chinese entities, they won't be enough to disrupt yuan trading, it said. AdvertisementFresh sanctions on Russia are too late to be a game-changer, but they will help cement the role of China's yuan in place of Western currencies, a think tank said. "In May, its share in exchange trading once again hit a new record, reaching 53.6 percent.

Extreme heat takes toll on outdoor workers

There’s little to no escape from sweltering temperatures for construction workers like Eva Marroquin, who cleans work sites in Austin, Texas, and has worked in the industry for 17 years. Since 2010, she’s worked closely with the Workers Defense Project, an organization that advocates for protections for low-wage, immigrant workers in the Texas construction industry. Slowing down small businessesIt’s barely just now summer, and heatwaves are already slowing down small businesses, according to Homebase, which provides payroll software to more than 100,000 small businesses, covering 2 million hourly workers. “I think anything that impacts small businesses is affecting the economy as a whole,” he said, noting how small businesses account for half the jobs in the country. For herself, the high heat is more of an inconvenience; the car’s hotter and she just needs to pack some extra water.

From the start, the three conservative board members of the Temecula Valley Unified School District made clear where they stood. On the same night in December 2022 that they were sworn in as a majority, they passed a resolution banning critical race theory from classrooms in their Southern California district. Months later, they abruptly fired the superintendent, saying they believed the district needed someone with new ideas. After that, they passed a rule requiring that parents be notified whenever a student requests to be identified as a different gender at school. The moves were applauded by conservatives, many of them Christian churchgoers who had helped to install the new board members, hoping that Temecula Valley could remain an island of traditional values in a liberal state.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken, a Dad’s Gift to Himself
  + stars: | 2024-06-16 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Good morning. We stand on the boat, on a platform at the stern or on the softening deck in the bow, and we look. Sometimes the fish come, sliding around happy in the middle of the outgoing tide: Cast! Other times they don’t, and eyes move up: an osprey, a wisp of cloud, a bald eagle, a flapping flag on a pole a mile away, an oystercatcher, a jetliner inbound from Europe, terns, oak trees, a congregation of glossy ibises flapping into a wedge above the marsh. All this but my thoughts run, mostly, to dinner: the chicken I’ve got resting in a buttermilk bath for fried chicken (above), a father’s gift to himself, my favorite fried chicken recipe, hard-won over time.
