Amazon's executive in charge of its private-label business has found a new role on the supply chain side, following the company's decision to axe dozens of house brands, Insider has learned. Matt Taddy, formerly Amazon's VP of private brands, is now VP of supply chain optimization technology, also known as SCOT, according to an internal email reviewed by Insider. Amazon's private label business launched dozens of in-house brands in recent years across a number of categories, including clothing, furniture, and electronics. The Federal Trade Commission said in a lawsuit against Amazon last month that the company "degrades its search quality by stacking the deck against third-party competitors of Amazon's private label products." In response, Amazon started significantly scaling back its private label business, and decided to cut many of these brands, according to the Wall Street Journal .

CNN —A Chicago-area landlord was arrested and charged with murder and hate crimes after authorities said he stabbed and killed a 6-year-old boy and seriously wounded his mother, allegedly because the tenants are Muslim. Authorities were called to the residence in unincorporated Plainfield Township, roughly 40 miles southwest of Chicago, shortly before noon Saturday after a woman called 911 saying her landlord had attacked her, according to the sheriff’s office. Researchers found microscopic traces of paint by using infrared light that is absorbed by the blue paint and appears on camera as a glowing white (right). By illuminating the sculptures with the red light, a pigment known as “Egyptian blue” absorbs the light and appears on camera as a glowing white. “Egyptian blue” was a popular pigment of its time that was made using calcium, copper and silicon, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. Verri said he hopes that further imaging will soon be developed to find other colors present on the sculptures.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An inflation gauge closely tracked by the Federal Reserve rose in August, boosted mainly by higher gas prices. Friday's report from the Commerce Department showed that prices rose 0.4% from July to August, up from just 0.2% the previous month. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, though, “core” inflation rose by the smallest amount in nearly three years, evidence that inflation pressures continue to ease. Compared with a year earlier, overall prices rose 3.5% in August, slightly higher than the 3.4% increase in July. The inflation gauge that was issued Thursday, called the personal consumption expenditures price index, is separate from the better-known consumer price index.
