Ruth Westheimer, the grandmotherly psychologist who as “Dr. Ruth” became America’s best-known sex counselor with her frank, funny radio and television programs, died on Friday at her home in New York City. Dr. Westheimer was in her 50s when she first went on the air in 1980, answering listeners’ mailed-in questions about sex and relationships on the radio station WYNY in New York. The show, called “Sexually Speaking,” was only a 15-minute segment heard after midnight on Sundays. But it was such a hit that she quickly became a national media celebrity and a one-woman business conglomerate.

The Irony of Dr. Ruth
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Rhonda Garelick | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
I will never forget the afternoon I spent, about 30 years ago, with Dr. Ruth Westheimer, interviewing her for a now-long-lost magazine article — my first ever. At 4-foot-7 Dr. Ruth used them to keep her feet from dangling when she sat down. Dr. Ruth’s office testified to her own engaged and connected life. Dr. Ruth, it turned out, was an avid and accomplished skier, a fact that should not have surprised me but did. Ruth Westheimer posed a perpetual contradiction: Her form never seemed to match her content.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running for president as an independent, has said that he has “many skeletons” in his closet. Mr. Kennedy declined to comment on the messages or on Ms. Cooney’s allegations. Ms. Cooney was a weekend babysitter — the Kennedys had three children then (a fourth was born later) — and she worked as an intern in his law clinic at Pace. Another time, she said, Mr. Kennedy came into her room shirtless and asked her to rub lotion on his back. Ms. Cooney also described an incident when she was alone at the house with Mr. Kennedy.

Most people don’t use mail the way they used to – if they send out mail at all. And, most of all, businesses still depend on the mail to help them reach customers and keep the economy going. A history older than AmericaThe postal service and the United States have grown side by side since before the country’s birth – quite literally. The band The Postal Service was an indie-pop darling near the turn of the century. While stamp prices have doubled in that time, most experts point the finger at technology instead.

The British Army has shrunk to its lowest level since the early 1800s. That's a far cry from the Chinese army of 2 million soldiers, Russia's 1.3 million, or the 460,000 active-duty troops of the US Army. "As things stand, the British Army is a one-trick pony," Nicholas Drummond, a British defense expert and former infantry officer, told Business Insider. CNN —“Sorry/Not Sorry,” in theaters Friday, revisits the 2017 comedy-world firestorm involving five women’s accounts of sexual misconduct by comedian Louis C.K. only to be shut down; and Abby Schachner, a comic and writer who went public with her account of C.K. Then it was followed by C.K.’s Grammy-winning 2022 album “Sincerely Louis C.K.,” in which he joked about the behavior as a sexual hangup rather than abuse. “There are dozens of Russell Brands,” was the headline of one Guardian piece on female comics. The independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. privately apologized last week to a woman who accused him of sexual assault in a recent magazine article, The Washington Post reported on Friday. In an article in Vanity Fair last week, she said Mr. Kennedy made unwanted sexual advances toward her while she was at his family home in the late 1990s, including by groping her in a pantry. Ms. Cooney told The Post that Mr. Kennedy had called her twice on July 3 of this year, after the Vanity Fair article had run, and then sent her two text messages, which she also showed to The New York Times. “I hope you are well,” he wrote in the first message. “Please call me if you have a moment.”In the second, sent shortly after midnight, he wrote: “I read your description of an episode in which I touched you in an unwanted manner.

CNN —Rudy Giuliani is no longer entitled to bankruptcy protection, a judge decided Friday, making it possible for creditors to immediately pursue his assets within days. Judge Sean Lane of the federal bankruptcy court in New York made the decision partly because of Giuliani’s lack of transparency after he filed for bankruptcy more than six months ago. The worth of those other assets is unclear, as creditors accuse Giuliani of downplaying or not disclosing complete estimates of the value of what he owns. The creditors believe one World Series ring alone would sell for nearly $30,000, according to court filings in his bankruptcy case. Giuliani agreed to end his bankruptcy proceedings, after Freeman and Moss suggested that approach earlier this week.

Unlike what he has been accused of over the last eight months, what occurred between us was not sexual. It was professional — demonstrative of the way dynamic and domineering men moved in our heyday. I predicted last weekend that the Democrats will find a way to jettison Joe Biden; that likelihood seems to fluctuate daily or even hourly, but for now my prediction stands. Because it is so obvious to me, I had long assumed the Democratic Party would consider it equally obvious. But it is no longer clear to me that the party’s elected officials actually share that assumption. But to the extent that goal conflicts with other, more mundane imperatives, more than a few Democrats seem to view beating Trump as a secondary objective. I wrote about this in the context of Biden’s “save democracy, vote Democrat” rhetoric before the 2022 midterms, but clearly the point merits new elaboration.

Dalio, the founder of the world's largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, wrote a column for Time magazine published Tuesday. "To begin, I want to make clear that I respect, like, and empathize with President Biden and I get that Democrats find themselves in a difficult position," Dalio wrote. "I look at this case like the fable of the emperor who has no clothes," Dalio added. First, the party can retain Biden as its nominee, a path Dalio thinks the party has chosen for now — at least publicly. Musk also runs the electric car company Tesla, and is the world’s richest person, according to Forbes magazine. The Huey Long-like character of Willie Stark in Robert Penn Warren’s “All the King’s Men” comes to mind, as does the figure of Brutus in Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.”And so, increasingly, does President Biden. The man elected to banish his self-deluded, deceptive, disrespected and destructive predecessor increasingly embodies those vices himself. “Saying hello to one Democratic megadonor and family friend at the White House recently, the president stared blankly and nodded his head,” Olivia Nuzzi reported last week for New York magazine. Arden's voice made him one of the most popular romance audiobook narrators of his generation. "My working name of 'Joe Arden,' has always been just that, a professional persona that labeled my career," he added. A European rival to HIMARS takes shape
  + stars: | 2024-07-07 | by ( Michael Peck | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +6 min
Europe is building a multiple rocket launcher that resembles America's HIMARS, the ground-fired weapon that took on the precision strike missions that Ukraine's battered air force couldn't. Many, such as France's LRU and Germany's MARS 2, are based on the U.S. M270, a tracked mobile rocket launcher, and its Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System rockets. One HIMARS launcher can carry six GMLRS rockets or one longer-range ATACMS ballistic missile. HIMARS rockets destroyed Russian ammunition depots and headquarters, disrupting logistics and command and control, and spurring Russian forces to move vital facilities deeper behind their lines. Collectively, such trends are prompting some militaries to consider possible alternatives to the US HIMARS system, though certainly that remains a major player in this competition for contracts."
