PARIS — The United States and China each won 40 gold medals, in the first Summer Games draw in Olympics history, with America pulling into a tie Sunday with victory in the last event, women’s basketball. But then San Diego native and decorated cyclist Jennifer Valente bailed out the United States by defending her gold in the women’s omnium. Gold medalist Noah Lyles of Team United States celebrates on the podium during the Men's 100m medal ceremony at the Olympics in Paris, on Aug. 5, 2024. The United States still came out with the most overall medals, taking home 126 from Paris 2024. The United States hasn’t failed at winning the most medals since 1992 when the “Unified Team,” athletes from the former Soviet Union republics, won 112 medals, 45 gold.

Read previewJoe Rogan wants you to know that calling Robert Kennedy Jr. "the only" presidential candidate who "makes sense" wasn't an endorsement. On Rogan's post, Trump allies continued to insult Rogan's intelligence and trustworthiness. Mike Madrid, a Republican political consultant, told The New York Times that Rogan's support of Kennedy Jr "takes straight from the Trump base." However, a potential deal between the two — in which Kennedy Jr. would receive a cabinet position in exchange for his endorsement — fell through. Representatives for Kennedy, Trump, and Rogan did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

The historic endorsement of the Democratic presidential ticket is the first for the civil rights group, which formed in 1929 to protect the rights of Americans of Mexican descent. LULAC leaders announced the endorsement first to NBC News and plan to join Harris and Walz at a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday. The Trump campaign never replied. In 1956, LULAC President Felix Tijerina personally endorsed the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket. LULAC members were active in Viva Kennedy clubs in 1960 and members have supported local Mexican American candidates, such as El Paso Mayor Raymond Telles.

The world’s most popular podcaster has, sort of, but not really, thrown his support to one of the 2024 presidential race’s least popular candidates. On Thursday, Joe Rogan said he preferred Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent, for president. His remarks about Mr. Kennedy, uttered on a show with a far smaller reach than his own, nonetheless set off a frenzied response. Supporters of former President Donald J. Trump, worried that Mr. Rogan’s stance could carve off voters and hurt his electoral chances come November, quickly turned on the podcaster, standup comic and U.F.C. They questioned his intelligence and even mocked his height, a spectacle that was greeted with something akin to joy — or, at least, schadenfreude — among Democrats who have long written off Mr. Rogan as helpful to their cause.

For some Americans, the American Dream has become more like a vision. That's according to a recent Pew Research Center survey, in which more than 8,700 U.S. adults were asked to describe their views of the American Dream. "The American Dream is changing, according to small-business owners," Fara Howard, GoDaddy's chief marketing officer, told CNBC Make It at the time. Thirty-one percent said they'd already achieved the American Dream, and 36% said they were on the right path toward it. "These views are nearly identical to when the Center last asked this question in 2022," the Pew report noted.

CNN —Turkey’s understated Olympian Yusuf Dikeç went viral for his nonchalant stance while competing in the air pistol mixed team competition event last week. Now, it appears Dikeç’s “insane aura” has inspired a new celebration that has spread across this year’s Games. With the eyes of the world watching his celebrations, Duplantis appeared to mimic Dikeç’s cold stance – hand in a make-shift pocket and an outstretched arm holding an imaginary gun. “Congratulations Duplantis,” Dikeç wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday, alongside a photo of Duplantis’ celebration. Dikeç has shared images of athletes copying his stance on his social media platforms, which have garnered many more followers since he competed in Paris.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump. But they also think the candidate best able to improve the economy is the de facto Democratic nominee Harris, not Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump. Three months ago, the same survey found Trump and Biden effectively tied, with 36% for Biden and 35% for Trump, and 29% planning to vote for Kennedy. This jump in support for Harris today is all the more notable because of how significant the economy is to the voting choices of younger Americans. In this survey, 77% of respondents said they either definitely or probably will vote.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign is disappearing — both on the trail and in the polls. Kennedy’s public poll numbers are dropping, from around 9% or 10% in national surveys before Biden dropped out, to about half that level now. The Kennedy campaign did not respond to questions for this article. The Kennedy and Trump campaigns have not commented or provided any details about whether Trump made Kennedy a specific offer. Kennedy posted a video on Aug. 2 announcing an endorsement from Russell Brand, the actor and comedian who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation "led the 2014 investigation and forensic analysis into the Central Park bear cub," the agency said in a statement Monday. The discovery of the dead cub in the middle of Manhattan made headlines in October of 2014, but investigators at the time were not able to determine how it got there. The agency said it's against the law to dispose of a dead bear the way Kennedy said he did. New York Police and New York State Environmental Conservation officers handle the body of bear cub that found dead under bushes in Central Park, New York on Oct. 6, 2014. “Wondering how to dispose of a dead animal in New York City?” a post on the department’s X account read.

In today’s edition, we report on how Vice President Kamala Harris’ search for a running mate is nearing the finish line. In case that wasn’t already clear from the vetting, the interviews and the obsessive media attention, consider the long — and still lengthening — list of ways one selection shaped decades of national politics. The pick influenced not just Obama’s electoral victories and the Obama administration but also every successive presidential election since then. And it could keep doing so for years, as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to make her choice Tuesday. And Harris’ running mate selection could anoint the Democratic Party’s next presidential favorite, potentially into the 2030s.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged Sunday that he abandoned a young dead bear in Central Park after he initially planned to skin the cub for meat. Kennedy described driving north of New York City to go falconing with a group when he saw a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. "It's going to be a bad story," Kennedy predicted in the video as people laughed. A dead bear cub was found in Central Park in 2014, leading to significant media coverage. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation referred NBC News' request for comment to the New York Police Department, which did not immediately respond.

"I was driving up really early, and a woman in a van in front of me hit the bear and killed it, a young bear. He then said his friends, who had been drinking, encouraged him to abandon the carcass in Central Park in New York. To dispose of the carcass, Kennedy said he intentionally left the dead bear on the side of the road to make it appear like a car had hit the bear. Lucas Altman remembers it well: On an early October night in 2014, he had taken his two Labradors to Central Park when suddenly they became alert, their tails wagging with the thrill of the hunt as they towed him to a patch of shrubbery. “It was dark, I was getting impatient and I didn’t bother to look,” he said. A day later, he returned to find out that another resident had made a shocking discovery under the bushes: a dead bear cub, oddly placed under an old bike. “It was so strange,” Mr. Altman, 52, remembered in an interview Monday. “I always thought it had to take somebody kooky to do that.”This weekend, a most unexpected culprit stepped forward to admit the bear dumping: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

He says in the video he decided to put the dead bear in his car. He said he broached to friends the idea of taking the bear to Central Park and making it appear as if a biker had hit it. Some of the details Kennedy describes in the video appear to align with an October 2014 incident in which a dead bear cub was discovered in Central Park, attracting coverage from major news outlets around the country. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation said shortly after the bear was discovered that it had died after being hit by a car. In a caption on the post containing the video, Kennedy wrote, “Looking forward to seeing how you spin this one, @NewYorker.”

AdvertisementWhereas many Republicans were beginning to see Georgia for the taking due to Biden's sagging numbers, Harris has given Democrats a jolt of energy in the state. Harris has strength with young voters and minoritiesBiden in 2020 swept nearly every swing state, boosted by his electoral advantage with young voters and minorities. And the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll taken in Georgia showed Harris and Trump tied at 47% support each among registered voters. And if Trump holds on to 2020 instead of uniting Georgia Republicans, Harris will likely benefit.
