The port handled a record amount of cargo last year, making it the 20th biggest port in the nation ranked by total tons, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Around the world, about 40 ships, including 34 cargo vessels, have Baltimore listed as a destination, including 10 commercial ships with anchors dropped in nearby waters, according to MarineTraffic, which tracks ships. The arrival of large container ships to the port “continues to demonstrate Baltimore’s capabilities of handling supersized vessels,” Governor Moore said in the statement. The port handled nearly 850,000 cars and light trucks last year, more than in any other U.S. port for the past 13 years. It was the ninth-busiest port in the nation last year for receiving foreign cargo, in terms of volume and value.

The big storyRetirement crisisart-4-art/Getty Images; Adobe Firefly; Jenny Chang-Rodriguez/BIWhat was once a natural part of the American dream — retirement — is now a luxury many workers can't afford. All of that combines to form a growing, and increasingly bleak, American retirement crisis. Plus, some who do leave work early end up regretting it . AdvertisementWhile early retirement isn't for everyone, retirement at its most basic level — leaving work after most of our adult lives — should be. The notion that people who've done everything they were supposed to, and still can't retire, points to major problems in the system at large.

Kent Nishimura | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesWest Palm Beach, Fla. — The U.S. Federal Reserve is likely to start cutting interest rates by the end of second quarter despite recent "hotter than expected" inflation data, according to Kristina Hooper, chief global market strategist at Invesco. The question has become, at what point — and how quickly — does the central bank start to cut rates in order to avoid plunging the economy into a downturn? Fed chair Jerome Powell said last week that the Fed may not be far off from throttling back. The Fed last raised interest rates in summer 2023; in prior interest-rate-hiking cycles, the Fed began cutting rates about 8½ months later, Hooper said. Jenny Johnson, president and CEO of Franklin Templeton, also expects the central bank to begin cutting rates this year, though in the second half of 2024 at Fed policy meetings in July or September.

A Montana rancher was charged with illegally selling offspring from a cloned sheep across state lines. There's nothing illegal about selling sheep for exorbitant prices — unless those animals are Marco Polo argali sheep, or in Schubarth's case, hybrids of Marco Polo argali sheep. Marco Polo argali sheep are native to central Asia and are considered threatened under the US Endangered Species Act. Shortly thereafter, Schubarth allegedly got his hands on some of those sheep parts and, in 2015, paid a deposit of $4,200 to produce cloned sheep embryos from the dead argali's remains. CNN —An awards ceremony curveball indeed: Emma Stone, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” dealt with a sartorial snafu just moments before she took the stage to accept her trophy. “My dress is broken,” Stone appeared to mouth while en route to receive her Academy Award. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained, referencing Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song from the “Barbie” movie — and, presumably, some dance moves she’d indulged in (because who wouldn’t boogie down with Gosling should the opportunity present itself?). And perhaps most infamously, Jennifer Lawrence, who was on stage with Stone tonight (as one of the former Best Actress winners who introduced this year’s nominees), took a tumble when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in 2013 due to the hemline on her cascading Dior Haute Couture gown. Lawrence, along with the other former winners, helped usher Stone off-stage.

But there's also a blooming black market in greenhouse gases. HFCs are commonly used in refrigerators and air conditioners, but they're also potent greenhouse gases. The shops have prompted both curiosity and innovation, adding to London’s long history of bagels — or “beigels,” as they were originally known here. Many of the new shops have similar stories: During the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns, homesick New Yorkers in London started experimenting with bagel baking at home. Once the pandemic hit, Mr. Gomez, missing New York and dreaming of bagels, started watching bagel-making videos on YouTube and testing out recipes. Another bagel connoisseur, Francesca Goldhill, of London, spent hours in her mother’s kitchen trying to find a recipe that produced bagels similar to those from Brooklyn Bagel, her favorite when she lived in New York. Igor Golovniov | Sopa Images | Lightrocket via Getty ImagesMicrosoft was accused Friday of abusing the dominance of its Azure cloud computing unit to squeeze a — and, in some cases, evaporate — the profit margins of rival cloud platforms in Europe. Under those rules, Microsoft required firms to purchase a Software Assurance license and "mobility rights" if they wanted to deploy their Microsoft software on hosted cloud services offered by rival providers. It also formed the basis of an investigation from the European Commission seeking to determine whether Microsoft's cloud practices are anti-competitive. But the growth of the unnamed cloud vendor's profit margins didn't match Microsoft's, and in fact the competing cloud vendor saw their margins fall from a positive mid-twenties percentage in 2018 to double-digit negative profit margins in 2023. The biggest decline in profit margins for this cloud firm occurred in 2019, the same year Microsoft changed its licensing terms to favor licensing software on Azure, the CISPE said.

In today's big story, we're looking at pharma companies' surging stocks and threatening tech darlings thanks to their weight-loss drugs. And it comes despite only 1% of US adults taking weight-loss drugs, according to Bank of America , which predicts that number could rise to 15% by 2035. Weight-loss drugs are also cutting more than just fat. For Wall Street, meanwhile, the equation is much simpler: Getting more people on weight-loss drugs boosts the economy. The trend, which will be powered by cash-rich mega-cap tech companies, is thanks to strong earnings growth, the bank said.
