Seven automakers plan to build an electric-vehicle charging network to take on Tesla. Seven car companies are making their own charging network to take on Elon Musk's Tesla Superchargers. Tesla, by comparison, has spent over a decade building out a vast network of charging stations specifically for its owners. And that network, which historically only allowed Tesla owners to plug in, has been a huge driver of Tesla sales. It sounds like the planned charging network aims to mimic some of the things Tesla got right, and add some extra conveniences.

FUKUOKA, Japan, July 26 (Reuters) - Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan finished with a flourish to break the longest-standing world record in women's swimming, claiming the 200 metres freestyle title in a time of one minute, 52.85 seconds at the World Aquatics Championships on Wednesday. Summer McIntosh of Canada was 0.80 seconds behind to take bronze in a world junior record time. Olympic champion Titmus had blazed to the 400m freestyle title on Sunday to erase 16-year-old McIntosh's mark and was well placed to go for another record after topping the semi-final time sheet. Hungary's world record holder Kristof Milak was absent from the men's 200m butterfly that followed, as the Olympic and world champion skipped the meet saying that he was not physically or mentally in a position to compete. The mixed 4x100m medley relay concludes the fourth day of swimming with the Americans tipped to win their third title.

CNN —Seven major automakers are coming together to create a joint venture that will build out a large electric vehicle fast-charging network in the North America, in an attempt to make electric vehicles more attractive to consumers. The first of the new charging stations will open next summer, the companies announced, first in the US and, later, in Canada. Vehicles made by other manufacturers, not just these seven, will be able to charge at these stations, as well. The new joint venture will rely on funds from the automakers as well as using grants offered by the federal government to build new EV chargers. There are currently about 35,000 NACS and CCS chargers in the US, but many more will be needed as the number of electric vehicles increases in coming years.

It looks like frunk in the Ford F-150 Lightning, one of the Cybertruck's closest rivals, is way bigger. The Ford F-150 Lightning looks like it has one big edge over Tesla's upcoming Cybertruck. Judging by an unverified photo posted online and first spotted by the EV news website Electrek, the Cybertruck's frunk looks rather tiny, which may disappoint potential buyers. When I drove the F-150 Lighting last year, the truck's frunk easily handled multiple backpacks and duffels that I didn't want sliding around in the bed. Tesla's Texas factory just built its first Cybertruck, and deliveries are set to begin later this year — two years behind schedule.

BENGALURU, July 24 (Reuters) - Indian auto parts maker Samvardhana Motherson International (SMIL) (SAMD.NS) said on Monday it made a second acquisition this month, buying Germany's Dr. Schneider Group for 118.3 million euros ($131.6 million). Dr. Schneider Group, a unit of Dr. Schneider Holding, manufactures interior components for vehicles such as panels and lighting. The German company had filed for insolvency in September 2022 due to "a failed operational and financial restructuring", Samvardhana Motherson said in a statement, referring to the acquisition, which was done through an insolvency process. Dr. Schneider Group employs 4,500 people in seven facilities across Germany, Spain, Poland, the U.S., and China, SMIL said. The acquisition adds to SMIL's repertoire of big-ticket purchases to increase its presence in the auto parts manufacturing sector.

Britain upgrades to also-ran in EV battery race

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is joining the global arms race to secure future industries, but he has a long way to go. Europe may have 25 so-called gigafactories, vast plants that turn raw materials such as lithium into battery packs, by 2025. While both Theresa May and Boris Johnson tried, they failed to win over big global players like Tesla (TSLA.O), Samsung or Northvolt, which preferred European sites. The UK leader can at least now claim he can attract global players. But Tata’s 40 GWh of new capacity brings Britain’s total to just over 50 GWh by 2026, after factoring in the plant operated by China’s Envision in Sunderland.

When it comes to Tesla stock, the only reason to buy has nothing to do with its electric vehicle business. But according to a Wednesday note from DataTrek Research co-founder Nicholas Colas, there's only one reason to buy Tesla stock at its current levels, and it has nothing to do with its EV business. The car industry is difficult to compete in, as evidenced by the current stock prices of legacy automakers, he observed. So when it comes to Tesla stock, don't just look at its EV sales, according to Colas. The remaining $200 billion to $300 billion of Tesla's current market valuation is assigned to the company's EV business, which is comparable to Toyota's current market valuation.

The decision marks a shift in focus for the Japanese automaker, a major backer of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles as an alternative to electric vehicles. Toyota sold just over 3,900 fuel cell vehicles in 2022, less than half of 1% of its global sales of around 9.5 million vehicles. In May, Toyota and Daimler Truck Holding (DTGGe.DE) said they had agreed to cooperate on hydrogen technology and reached a preliminary deal to combine their truck businesses in Japan. Toyota launched its dedicated fuel-cell unit, the Hydrogen Factory, with 1,350 staff earlier this month.

Exports last year were 94 metric tonnes, up 25% on 2021. Last year's exports totaled 44 metric tonnes in both wrought and unwrought form. As of September 2022 the DLA was storing 14 metric tonnes of germanium metal and 6.9 metric tonnes of scrap. An outright ban could be counter-productive, as China found out when it halted exports of rare earths to Japan in 2010. You allow yourself to spend more on the things you enjoy by spending less things you don't necessarily care about, he explains. "I spend extravagantly on the things I love, but I cut way back mercilessly on the things I don't," he says. Basically, turning your "money dial" down in certain areas allows you to turn it up in others. Rather than solely focus on depriving yourself, this approach allows you to zoom in on the things you love and spend freely in those areas. But it also means cutting back on the less important things.

June 25 (Reuters) - Six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez on Sunday said he will miss the Dutch Grand Prix after failing to recover from injuries suffered at last weekend's German Grand Prix. The 30-year-old Spaniard pulled out of the German Grand Prix after crashing five times before the race at the Sachsenring - a track where he has won eight times in his MotoGP career. The Honda driver has yet to finish a race this season and languishes in 19th place in the standings, in a season so far dominated by Ducati. "I have not arrived at Assen (race track) at 100% physically. In addition to the sprain and the finger fracture, there is a fractured rib that has been causing me a lot of pain," Marquez said in a statement.
