Shopify on Thursday released additional internal guidance around employee side hustles, one day after a company-wide memo from CEO Tobi Lütke caused confusion among workers. Lütke continued: "You should run a Shopify store to learn our product. Shopify's guidance on Thursday clarified the company's stance. And when it comes to starting a Shopify store, we encourage it. Shopify employees can use the company's software to launch their own stores for free.

Right now, California Forever is just a website with some ideology and a handful of hopeful sketches with a faintly socialist-utopian flair. Point is, the garden city remains a dream honored more in the breach — in pitches like the one for California Forever. Just about 60 miles southeast of the California Forever site is a residential development called Mountain House. It's what plans like California Forever look like when brick starts getting laid.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly Acquire Licensing RightsTORONTO, Sept 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Lululemon Athletica (LULU.O) and Peloton Interactive’s (PTON.O) truce couldn’t have come fast enough. The apparel firm and exercise-bike maker said on Wednesday they entered into a five-year partnership to make Peloton the exclusive digital fitness content provider for Lululemon, while Lululemon would become Peloton’s primary athletic apparel partner. Peloton gains a foothold in apparel while Lululemon members will gain access to thousands of Peloton classes. It’s easy to envisage Lululemon offering Peloton subscriptions for a discount at checkout time, say, or for Peloton to send a free T-shirts with a bike.

Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke wrote a company-wide memo Wednesday discouraging employees from having side hustles. "This surprises me because it directly contradicts the countless times I've said Shopify is like a professional sports team that requires our unshared attention." The Vault is a set of internal web pages where Shopify employees can access information about company policies. "He was someone who could devote his full attention and time to that quest," Finkelstein wrote. Lütke said Wednesday that employees should start their own Shopify stores because it helps them to stay familiar with the platform.

While there has been a huge gain, it is barely scratching the surface of the potential market. Some potential patients don't have coverage of the pricey medicines through their health insurance plans yet. (For example, those seeking to use GLP-1 drugs for obesity can't receive coverage if they are insured by Medicare as the federal health plan is not allowed to cover weight loss drugs.) Walmart told Bank of America that fiscal second-quarter sales benefited roughly 1% from GLP-1 drug sales volumes. Its stock has fallen 45% year to date on fears that these drugs will shrink the company's market potential.

REUTERS/Carlo Allegri/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 27 (Reuters) - Peloton Interactive (PTON.O) and Lululemon Athletica (LULU.O) said on Wednesday they had entered into a five-year global partnership, sending Peloton's shares up 16.7% in aftermarket trading. Under the deal, Peloton would become the exclusive digital fitness content provider for the apparel maker, developing all content for Lululemon Studio beginning early 2024. The fitness platform provider, once a pandemic darling, has taken a series of measures to cut costs. Shares of Peloton's rival Xponential Fitness (XPOF.N) pared some gains on the news of the company's deal with Lululemon and were last up 3.6% after the bell. Lululemon also said it would discontinue selling its Studio Mirror - an interactive "smart fitness" device that features live, on-demand workouts - which has seen lackluster demand in recent months.

(Reuters) - Washington's National Zoo is honoring its three giant pandas with nine days of events ahead of their return to China but stormy weather and a looming U.S. government shutdown have put something of a damper on the festivities. Mei Xiang, Tian Tian and their cub Xiao Qi Ji are scheduled to be returned in early December. The zoo, operated by the Smithsonian Institute, receives federal funding, and would be forced to close to the public during a government shutdown, according to its website. Mei Xiang, 25, and Tian Tian, 26, came to the zoo in 2000 under a cooperative research and breeding agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association. The zoo did not say whether it has any immediate plans to acquire more giant pandas, but said on its website that it "hopes to continue this work in the future."

Working out no longer means posing on a yoga mat in the living room, and “going to drinks” demands more strategy than sipping post-Zoom cocktails on a couch. Now we run to spin class, spend hours in cubicles, socialize face-to-face and schlep a tote stuffed with essentials for all of the above.

The eye-popping numbers are part of a longer-term shift toward private college housing. Moody's Analytics recently warned of an "affordability crisis" for college students, noting that since 2019, rents for student housing in a sample of notable college towns had grown faster than those of regular apartments. Student housing goes privateThe gold rush in student housing is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in the 1980s and '90s, most college students either lived in bland, cinder-block-walled dorms or in conventional apartments farther from campus. Even with his frugality, he came to realize that the prices in West Campus were "impossible to rationalize" for a college student.

Opinion | A Skeptical Look at ‘Self-Care’

Love it or hate it, self-care has transformed from a radical feminist concept into a multibillion-dollar industry. In 2021, 34 percent of women reported feeling burned out at work, along with 26 percent of men. In her book “Real Self-Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness (Crystals, Cleanses, and Bubble Baths Not Included),” she encourages people to look beyond superficial fixes — the latest juice cleanses, yoga workshops, luxury bamboo sheets — to feel better. Instead, she argues that real self-care requires embracing internal work, which she outlines as four practices: setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, aligning your values and exercising power. Lakshmin argues that when you practice real self-care, you not only take care of yourself, but you can also plant the seeds for change in your community.

Brands like Chick-Fil-A and Geico are being accused of violating 1980s privacy law the VPPA. Broadcasters have long been wary of running afoul of a 1988 privacy law called the Video Privacy Protection Act that went into effect after the video rental history of then-Supreme Court nominee Judge Robert Bork was leaked to a newspaper. Since November last year, brands as diverse as Hallmark, Folgers, Mattel, Chick-Fil-A, General Mills, Mars, La-Z-Boy, Geico, and Fossil have faced lawsuits accusing them of VPPA violations. But these dismissals don't completely neutralize the threat of VPPA lawsuits. At least 70 VPPA class action lawsuits have been filed in the past year, according to Bloomberg Law.
