☆ UN Committee Voices Concern About Rising Israeli Hate Speech Against Palestinians

GENEVA (Reuters) - A U.N. committee on racism voiced concern on Friday about a "sharp increase in racist hate speech and dehumanisation" directed at Palestinians by Israelis, including senior officials, since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks. The health ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza says more than 7,000 Palestinians have been killed in the air strikes. The Geneva-based committee said it was "highly concerned" by recent comments including those made by senior Israeli officials, politicians and public figures and called for Israel to condemn hate speech and investigate and punish such acts. The committee also repeated a past recommendation for Palestinian authorities to combat hate speech and incitement to violence. The comments from the U.N. committee follows Israel's criticism of the global body's Secretary-General Antonio Guterres whom it accused of justifying Hamas attacks on Israel.

CNN —There has been “significant progress” on negotiations to release hostages held by Hamas but there are issues still remaining, diplomatic sources familiar with the negotiations told CNN. “There are issues still remaining, but talks are ongoing, and we remain hopeful,” the source added. The Biden administration has advised Israel to delay a ground invasion of Gaza, hoping to buy time for hostage negotiations and to allow more humanitarian aid to reach Palestinians in the sealed-off enclave, according to several U.S. officials. American officials also want more time to prepare for attacks on U.S. interests in the region from Iran-backed groups, which officials said are likely to intensify once Israel moves its forces fully into Gaza. Mr. Biden also spoke to the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Britain. When Mr. Biden met with the Israeli war cabinet during his trip to Tel Aviv last week, he avoided making requests of Mr. Netanyahu, officials said. Instead, the president offered a series of questions that should be answered before a ground invasion starts.
