Clarkston, Georgia CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama used their first joint campaign appearance, on Thursday night in this Atlanta suburb, to issue parallel warnings about the dangers facing the country if Donald Trump is elected again to lead it. Battleground Georgia is the latest stop in a late-campaign sprint by Obama, who has leveled at Trump increasingly passionate attacks and rounds of mocking. After Obama’s speech, Harris came onstage, where they embraced before the vice president delivered a nearly identical message. “What I can’t understand is why anyone would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you. On Saturday, Harris is also set to appear with former first lady Michelle Obama in Michigan.

With the Federal Reserve rate-cutting cycle now underway, income investors may want to take a closer look at their portfolios. In this environment, Vanguard likes higher-quality, fixed-income assets. However, with high yield credit, Vanguard is focusing on bottom-up security selection due to the dispersion among issuers. CCC-rated bonds gained 12.5% year to date, as of Sept 30, versus the 4.3% return in AA credit, according to Vanguard. Individual investors can get access to corporate credit through mutual funds or exchange-traded funds comprising investment-grade or high-yield bonds.

New York CNN —A Colorado man has filed the first lawsuit against McDonald’s relating to its E. coli outbreak linked to Quarter Pounders that, so far, has led to at least 49 illnesses across 10 states, including one death. The lawsuit was filed one day after the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a food safety alert warning that dozens of people reported eating the Quarter Pounder sandwich at McDonald’s before becoming sick. The lawsuit, a copy of which was posted online by Bloomberg Law, accuses McDonald’s of product liability, negligence and breach of implied warranties. “The McDonald’s E. coli Outbreak will be one of the most significant food poisoning outbreaks this year,” Simon said in a press release. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald’s have not been implicated in this outbreak, the FDA said.

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks at a campaign event at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 2024. A stark shift toward former President Donald Trump on the political gambling platform Polymarket this month stoked scrutiny about four accounts that have collectively spent over $28 million betting on the Republican nominee to win the 2024 presidential election. Polymarket on Thursday confirmed what a number of experts have suspected: All four accounts are controlled by a single trader. The company insisted that it has found no evidence that the trader is trying to juice Trump's odds on the political betting market. The scrutiny on the Polymarket trades comes as political betting markets have taken on a much more prominent role in the 2024 election cycle.

The teenager has been charged with one count of terrorism and one count of conspiracy to commit terrorism, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office said in a statement –– both of which are felonies. The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions in question, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson, come from a single source and are then sliced and packaged as raw vegetables in individual bags and sent to restaurants. State health officials alerted the CDC about an unusual uptick in E. coli cases on Oct. 10. There is no indication that diced onions on other McDonald’s menu items are part of the outbreak. "While the slivered onions are the likely source, FSIS continues to verify the safety of the ground beef used," the spokesperson said.

That’s how Republican Rep. Chip Campsen, an occasional ship pilot himself, sees honoring one of his favorite South Carolinians. While South Carolina has a monument with multiple panels honoring the struggle of African Americans from their journey on slave ships through today, it doesn’t honor an individual Black man or women among the two dozen monuments scattered around the Statehouse. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education.
